THE FINAL DAYS

This is the Thirty-Third Week of the Ordinary Season on our Liturgical Calendar. Next week, the Thirty-Fourth Sunday, which is also

celebrated as the “Feast of Christ the King,” will mark the end of the Liturgical Year. Then a new season will begin – the Season of Advent.

As we near the end of the year, the readings present “End-time” themes for our reflection. There is something ominous about the end of events. For example, when one is about to complete High School or College, or when one is about to retire from work, or being transferred from one establishment to another, or simply changing careers, one could be faced with questions as to whether one has lived up to expectation and performed one’s duties with distinction or not. For those completing school (any level of schooling), the question could be whether one would complete with good grades or not. Athletes competing at the Olympic games, or in any of the sports, could equally be asking themselves whether they would win medals and trophies or not.

In the First Reading, the Prophet Malachi talks about the “Day of the Lord,” believed to be the day when the Lord would come to judge the earth and all its inhabitants. For “the proud and all evildoers,” Malachi says the day will blaze like an oven which “will set them on fire,” and annihilate them completely, even to their roots. While that statement certainly sounds threatening, to say the least, it is not directed towards everyone. According to Malachi, it is only the sinful who will face the fiery cleansing of that day. For the righteous, however, it will be a day of healing when

“the sun of justice” will rise over them. When that happens, all would realize that “The Lord comes to rule the earth with justice” (Responsorial Psalm).

The gospel mentions some suffering that will take place; that even the righteous might experience. It is symbolic and meant to encourage all believers to remain steadfast: they are not to be deceived by false prophets (teachers), who would claim knowledge of the end of the world; nor be frightened by disasters – natural or manmade; nor be overcome by persecutions. One might have to testify for the faith, but the Lord will provide the believer with sufficient “wisdom” to speak that none can refute. Steadfastness is key to staving off every fear; for victory is assured where there is constancy of faith.

The theme of suffering presented by the gospel is a reality that everyone needs to face. For us believers, we see suffering as a purifying experience with Christ, who suffered for our sake. The challenge is to accept and endure suffering in the spirit of Christ, who assures us of salvation: “By your perseverance you will secure your lives,” (Luke 21:19).

When “end-time” questions begin to flash through your mind, know that for us believers, it is not about whether we would be saved or not. Rather, like the athlete who approaches every competition positively with only one aim, we approach life in Christ not with a “whether - or” attitude, but with steadfastness and hope. Remaining close to Jesus, in both Word and Sacrament, is key to our salvation in Christ.

Fr. Seth

Weekend of November 23 – November 24, 2019 1st Reading: 2 Samuel 5:1-3 2nd Reading: Colossians 1:12-20 Gospel: Luke 23:25-43

Reflection Questions for this weekAdults: Paul’s words to the Thessalonians are tough: if you want to eat, you must work! How does this translate into our society today? How do you reconcile this with Jesus’ command to love and feed the poor?Children: Jesus teaches us that work is good for us. What kind of work do you do during the week? How does it help you?

Advent/Lent Study and Prayer

“The Joy of the Gospel”

Evangelii Gaudium

“The Joy of the Gospel” is the Apostolic Exhortation issued by Pope Francis on November 24, 2013, the first year of his service as Bishop of Rome. It reveals in very available terms the mission and purpose of Pope Francis’ agenda of Church reform, and seeks to engage all the faithful in the challenge.

At St. Frances the plan is to study this document in seven or eight sessions, three in Advent and four or five in Lent.

The Advent dates are December 3, 10 and 17. The Lenten dates are March 3, 10, 17, 24 and 31.

All sessions will be on Tuesdays at 2pm, concluding no later than 3:45pm.

All sessions will be in the Smulski Room of the School (with entrance directly off the parking lot).

All are welcome. For planning purposes, please register at the reception desk of the Pastoral Center, in person, or by phone 516 785 2333 ext. 0.

You may wish to have a copy of the document “The Joy of the Gospel”; copies are available at the reception desk for $10.00. Other study materials will be distributed during the course of the eight sessions.

Fr. John Rowan will lead the study.

LITURGY COMMITTEE ANNUAL ADVENT WREATH SALE

Amazing as it may seem, the First Sunday of Advent is December 1, 2019.

Our parish Liturgy Committee will be selling Advent Wreaths and candles, Advent Calendars and other items to help celebrate this Holy Season.  We will be at the front of the Church after all Masses on the weekends of November 16 & 17, November 23 & 24, and after the 10 a.m. and 12 noon masses on December 1.  Advent items make great Shower and Christmas gifts, and calendars are a fun way for children to learn about the season before Christmas.

The Knights of Columbus will be selling "Keep Christ in Christmas" magnets after all Masses on the weekends of November 16 & 17, November 23 & 24 and December 1.  All proceeds go to the young Seminarian’s from our parish.
