When we receive from the Lord’s table we unite ourselves to Jesus Christ, who makes us sharers in his body and blood. Ignatius of Antioch calls it the "one bread that provides the medicine of immortality, the antidote for death, and the food that makes us live forever in Jesus Christ". When you approach the Table of the Lord, what do you expect to receive? Healing, pardon, comfort, and rest for your soul? The Lord has much more for us, more than we can ask or imagine. The principal fruit of receiving the Eucharist is an intimate union with Christ. Do you hunger for the "bread of life"?

THE PASTOR’S LETTER Father John Gabriel

Dear Parish Family,

This past week Fr. Peter Funesti, one of my best friends for the past forty years, died of liver cancer. We met in high school on a youth ministry retreat in 1976, and that began a wonderful journey of friendship through discernment of our vocations as priests, seminary formation, and living out our call as priests together. Coincidentally, Fr. Peter became pastor of my home parish Church of the Nativity in Midland Park for the past seven years. He also became a very close friend of Msgr. Bill since the three of us were assigned together to St. Thomas the Apostle in Bloomfield for a few years (I can imagine the two of them singing Irish songs together in heaven with the real St. Patrick). No matter who we are or how much faith we have, death can be a difficult experience. I realized this past week that most of my sadness over the loss of my friend is not sadness for him: I am thrilled that he is finally released from the bonds of this earth that had become too heavy and painful for him living with cancer and a stroke that left him unable to move or speak. My sadness is more rooted in my own loss and the thought that we will not be able to share those things we enjoyed together any longer. In these moments where else can we turn but to faith? Of great help has been the outpouring of love and support that all those who knew Fr. Peter share together, as well as the prayers of other family and friends. In life, Peter was someone who knew lots of people and loved to bring people together. He was a real party person, he loved to laugh and celebrate, a person of tremendous hospitality. As the cancer began to claim more and more of his life, he would often say “this is part of the surrender.” To surrender to Christ and trust in His plan was Peter’s challenge and conso-lation, and he met it with great faith. He was less concerned with what was going to happen to him and more concerned with the faith of those who were praying for a miracle cure that did not happen. To the end he was concerned that people would love God through all things, and trust even in the midst of disappointments and crosses. In that way, Peter was the best of what a priest should be: worrying more about his people than about himself. I find it highly significant that he died on the Feast of the Visitation, when the Blessed Virgin Mary went to visit her cousin Elizabeth. This feast of our Lady is one of hospitality, of family, of mutual support among people, and those things were hallmarks of Peter’s life. When sadness and grief become part of our lives, it seems to me that we have two choices: we can either allow them to paralyze us in anger and depression, or we can through faith channel them into positive things in our lives and the lives of others. In this spirit, I would like to begin the task of creating here in St. James a Lazarus Ministry. I believe this ministry can help families in our parish who are dealing with the death of a loved one in several ways: by coordinating volunteers who can provide meals during times of wakes and funerals, by helping families plan funeral liturgies and being present to pray with families when possible, by assisting grieving families with any other needs in the days and weeks following the death of a loved one, and by facilitating a monthly Bereavement Support Group to provide others who are grieving a place to share thoughts and feelings in a sup-portive environment. Anyone who wants to help me create this ministry here at St. James, please join me for a preliminary meeting on Monday evening June 15th at 7:30 p.m. in the St. John (Rectory) Meeting Room. These days, I continue to speak with Fr. Peter because ‘life is changed, not ended.’ May all remember: in the language of faith, we will always all be connected, and our lives move ever onward toward our common destiny. Along the way let us help one another shoulder the burden. What better thing can we do for one another? In His Love,

~ Fr. John

INTENTIONS FOR THE SICK

At the “General Intercessions” we pray for the sick. Our prayers for the sick are very important, especially in critical times of sudden illness, surgery or worsening condition. We will continue to pray for and mention the names of our sick parishioners when we receive notice from the family or the individual asking for prayers. Their name will be mentioned for three weeks and after, the names will continue in the bulletin, until we receive notice otherwise. If the condition worsens we will mention the name again at Mass when notified.

Thank you for your continued support for this ministry. While your donations are greatly appreciated, we ask that you limit the items to those listed on the tags hanging in the gathering area. Some of the families have dietary restrictions so please do not leave any edible items not requested. The families who will be living here are very limited to the clothing that they can store so while we appreciate your thoughtfulness, we are not able to accept clothes, but we will send those items to St. Joe’s in Elizabeth where they will be given to people who can use them. Our greatest need right now is for overnight hosts. We especially need two adults (preferably one a male) every evening to spend the night. The Religious Education Classroom will be transformed into your own (air-conditioned) personal sleeping quarters, what a wonderful experience this can be for your entire family! We can also use help transporting the cots on Saturday, June 13 from Berkley Heights; if you have a truck or can help unload them once they are here, please let me know. We can use Shoprite gift cards as well as monetary donations. Please make your check payable to St. James Church and in the memo, write “Family Promise” and address your envelope to the attention of Nancy Caputo, you can bring your donation to the rectory or Religious Ed Office. It is easy to volunteer! Go to: www.signupgenius.com

Chose the date and volunteer slot you want, hit the “submit and sign up” button and you are done! You will be asked to enter your email address and will receive a reminder email two days prior to your volunteer date. All onsite volunteers will need to attend a brief training session on Tuesday, June 16 at 7:00PM in Hatcher Hall. If you have specific questions or would like additional information, please contact Nancy Caputo 973-376-2061, email: [email protected] or speak with Fr. John.

PARISH SCHOOL NEWS

Mrs. Patricia Dolansky Principal

As we slide into the last week of school, we’d like to reflect on the passing of the baton in the Principal’s office. Twelve years ago Mrs. Dolansky accepted the principal position at Saint James the Apostle School, and set about getting to know the students and their families, the nuances of running a school, and interfacing with her fellow principals and the staff of the Archdiocesan Schools Office. In that time, Mrs. Dolansky shepherded the school through renewal of Middle States Accreditation, realignment of middle school mathematics to offer pre-Algebra to seventh graders and Algebra to Eighth graders, and a successful volleyball program, to name only a few accomplishments. She did this while watching her daughters marry and begin families of their own, and was at the helm of the school for three Pastors: Fr. Bob Stagg, Msgr. Bill Hatcher, Fr. John Gabriel. Mrs. Dolansky takes her leave knowing that she has worked hard, in a roll-up-your sleeves kind of way, to make Saint James School a special place that advances academic excellence, fosters faith, and instills integrity. Thank you for all you have done for the students and families of our parish school. As Mrs. Caroline Ponterio takes the reins, we assure her of our enthusiasm and best wishes for this new role. Our long time 5th grade teacher, Mrs. Ponterio has been the faculty member that has spearheaded a number of initiatives, not only for her own classroom, but for the rest of the school. Already knowing Saint James and its students so well, we are happy to welcome her as our new principal.

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE PRINCIPALS ! By Mary McElroy

Sharing God’s Blessings Annual Appeal Springtime is always a very joyous time within the Catholic Church. In addition to the celebrating the wonderful joy of the Easter Season, our local church, The Archdiocese of Newark, has been blessed with a very fruitful spring season. This May, the Archdiocese of Newark welcomed nine newly ordained Transitional Deacons and twelve newly ordained Priests. Ordinations took place at the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart. Our local Archdiocese is given new life with each new Deacon and Priest who we are able to welcome into the Archdiocese of Newark, and it is your prayers and support that help encourage more and more voca-tions. While many dioceses in the United States have no candidates for the priesthood and clergy shortages are widespread, the Archdiocese of Newark is blessed with several men each year who are willing to answer God’s call to serve, insuring that the Church will be present for future generations. In fact, in several re-cent years, the Archdiocese of Newark has ordained more priests than any diocese in the United States. A portion of the funds collected by the Annual Ap-peal supports the seminary training and formation of our new priests. Your support of the Annual Appeal continues to directly support the three seminaries maintained by the Archdiocese to educate and train future priests. We are truly blessed with a large num-ber of men studying to be our future leaders. To learn more about the ministries of the Archdiocese of Newark, please visit www.rcan.org/sharing, like us on facebook at ‘Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New-ark’ or tweet us at @NwkArchdiocese!
