As we celebrate our Parish Feast Day of St. Raphael the Archangel, can you name the other two archangels? They are Gabriel, the archangel that appears to Mary in the Annunciation, and Michael, who is the defender in battle. Do you know where in the bible you will find the story of St. Raphael the Archangel? In the Old Testament Book of Tobit. Tobit, who was blind, sent his son Tobiah on a journey with Raphael, and on their journey he catches a big fish. The fish gall is used to heal Tobit's blindness. Tobiah also meets Sarah, who has married and lost several husbands. The liver and heart of the fish is used as incense to expel the demon from Sarah, so that now that she’s married to Tobiah, they will live happily every after. (Read the details in the book of Tobit.) Our statue in the court yard should have a fish in his hand instead of a flower. The artist who created the statue was working off a picture and he mistook the fish for a flower. That's why today, in celebration of the Feast Day of the Archangels, we will hand out a gift of fish...gummy fish….with a quote from The Book of Tobit.

Part of the Parish Feast Day is the celebration of our Fall Harvest Fest. Please come and join in the celebration. A thank you to all that gather to celebrate and to all who have helped with the Fall Harvest Fest. Thanks also to the many generous donors of the basket items.

I just returned from a pilgrimage following the steps of St. Paul. I and 20 pilgrims visited the holy sites in the countries of Turkey and Greece. We saw the ruins of some of the old cities and the present day culture of the area. It was most interesting that a few cities, which numbered several thousand people in the time of St. Paul, now lie in ruins, buried under the earth, or have had the stones and marble recycled (taken and used elsewhere). That's what happens when over 2,000 years, earthquakes change topography and sea levels.

We visited places like Hogia Sophia, where the Eastern Orthodox church has it's beginnings and where the council of Constantinople took place. We were at the famous Blue Mosque, and learned about the Islam religion and how Muslims worship. We visited towns that are talked about in Paul's letters and the Acts of the Apostles, like Corinth, Ephesus, Athens, and Thessaloniki. We also visited the place where St. John wrote the book of Revelation, or rather, dictated it, along with some of the cities that are talked about in that book.

Check out the pictures and in the coming weeks expect to hear more preaching on St. Paul, as I focus more on

our 2nd reading at Mass, which usually comes from Paul's letters.

PS According to the news, the stop lights on 9th and Westhaven will remain until 2016 when the corner will be

reconstructed. Then a permanent decision will be made on whether they remain.

Let’s Talk Stewardship…

The Stewardship Commission is grateful for the response from our parishioners who have completed the “green sheets.” on Stewardship Weekend. It was

noted that 95 families signed up for new areas of service. The leaders of these various groups have received a print out of the names of people who

volunteered. As your area of interest has a service event scheduled, if you are not notified, please call the Parish Office at 233-8044 for information on how

to contact your leader.

We would also ask the leaders to verify their list by September 30, 2013 and notify the Parish Office if an

update of the list is necessary. We are blessed to have parishioners who want to make a difference in people’s lives like Jesus did.

SEPTEMBER 29, 2013 TWENTY-SIXTH SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME | 5

Reflecting on the Scriptures (Amos 6:1-7, Psalm 146:7-10, 1 Timothy 6:11-16, Luke 16:19-31)

In The Bridges at Toko-Ri, a novel based on the Korean War, the reader follows Lieutenant Harry Brubaker

closely as he must leave his family in Denver to go to Korea to serve in the Korean War. The war has a ―distant‖

quality in the killing and the reconnaissance until Lieutenant Harry is shot down and finds himself behind enemy

lines. Upon exploring his new surroundings, Harry spots a Korean family bathing and laughing near a stream. In

this family he is able to see his own that he left behind in Denver. For the first time Harry understands that the

distant enemy is comprised of a father, a mother, children: a family...many families. Suddenly the war is not a

vague, distant abstraction. This war has eyes and faces — and families. No longer is the war impersonal. He sees

himself, and all of humanity in this moment.

It is easy for us to hold groups of people at a distance...a safe distance….from affecting our lives, our way of

thinking, and especially, our hearts. In today‘s Gospel, Jesus is speaking to the Pharisees who fail to hear

Abraham, Moses, and Jesus himself, in having compassion and caring for the poor. It is the parable of the

unseen by those in high places: the Pharisees for whom the parable is told and the rich. If we, like the Pharisees,

keep our distance from our ―Lazaruses,‖ those whom we are given to love and care for during our time on this

earth, we will not truly ―see‖ them….and we are in danger of lacking our full humanity….first in compassion

and secondly in caring action. For in each person we must see the fingerprint of God. We must see our own

poverty and our own humanity.

The rich man kept Lazarus at a distance, perhaps never looking into his eyes. He refused not only to reach out to

touch a very needy person, but he also resisted being touched by the poor man. From this safe distance, my heart

cannot be troubled or tugged. People who serve the poor personally are richer beyond measure. Lazarus had

something of real worth to offer the rich man and when death came, the transmission of Lazarus‘ gifts became

impossible. The less our hands are wrapped around things for our identity and meaning, the more they will be

open and available for receiving the body of Christ in one another.

Open my eyes, Lord, and help me to see your face. Help me to love like you.

WORKING WITH THE SCRIPTURES – Sept. 29, 2013 (Amos 6:1a,4-7; 1 Tim 6:11-16; Lk 16:19-31)

The underlying message of this week‘s Scripture readings, the

expectation that those who have little are to be cared for by those who have much, can be found in the sacred texts

of almost every religious Tradition. In the Hebrew Scriptures

the widow and the orphan, the most powerless people in the ancient Jewish world, hold special place; in the Christian

Testament Jesus is continually reaching out to the

marginalized, the outcast and the oppressed.

Paul‘s Letter to Timothy refers to those who have made the

―noble confession in the presence of many witnesses‖, most

likely referring to Baptism, as being joined to the ―noble confession‖ of Jesus before Pilate. Paul tells Timothy that,

joined in this Confession of Faith, we too are to ―…pursue

righteousness…‖ But if this is so how can we, joined as we are by baptism into Christ, remain silent before the

unrighteousness of marginalization and oppression, of people

forced to beg for food on the streets of our cities, of children

crying themselves to sleep because there is nothing for them to eat?

Amos makes a similar point when he asks how the people in the southern kingdom of Judah can continue to live lives of

wealth and privilege while the social order of their brothers

and sisters in the northern kingdom of Israel is collapsing.

Might we not ask ourselves the same question when we watch the evening news? Or when we scan the headlines in our

morning paper?

In Luke‘s gospel the rich man ―…dined sumptuously…‖ while

Lazarus lay, covered with sores, dying on his doorstep. Luke

tells us the name of the poor man but notice that the rich man

is left unnamed. Did Luke ‗accidentally‘ forget to give us this detail? Or could it be that he neglected to tell us the rich

man‘s name because we already know it? ―Woe to the

complacent in Zion!‖ Do we live the righteous promises of our ―…noble confession…‖? Or do we, like that rich man,

prefer to sit complacently in front of our television sets,

ignoring the poor who lay dying on our doorstep? Vinal Van Benthem
