Sustainable FuturesWelcome to the new year. 2014 saw a surge of activity in Berry around the principle of sustainability, with the funding of reusable cups and bags by the Berry Alliance, and a push by the community group, Only One Earth, towards making Berry plastic bag free. Unfortunately, a surge of holiday makers temporarily pushed plastic bag use in the wrong direction, but it has been encouraging to see residents taking up the offer of reusable items, and putting them to use. Our thanks to the local retailers who assisted with distribution after the Christmas Parade give away. If you still have not exchanged your Town Crier voucher for a Keepcup or bamboo bag, we have a few left over. Alliance committee members can let you know how to redeem your voucher. Thanks also to the dedicated few at OOE, who have worked hard to raise community awareness about reducing our reliance on plastic bags.Over recent months several interesting news stories have highlighted initiatives by individuals and communities who are actively taking control of their futures. Links to all these stories are below. Lauren Singer, a young New Yorker, has made no rubbish for the past two years. She is proof that you don’t need to live a totally alternative, hippy lifestyle to be low impact. Boyan Slat, an even younger Dutch man, is dedicating his energy to a larger issue; the huge volume of plastics polluting our oceans. The Byron Bay community are pushing for the fi rst Australian community-owned solar power electricity generator, this comes after German citizens in Hamburg voted in 2013 to buy back the electricity grid in a bid to take control back from the private sector. Berlin

residents are looking to follow suit. While it is hard to fi nd defi nitive fi gures, various sources estimate transmission and distribution losses account for up to 10% of electricity generation, with 10% of the energy content of coal being lost in combustion. These losses are covered in the cost of electricity to the consumer, making local renewable generation of power fi nancially viable. While many people link the issue of sustainability only with the environment, it is also an important factor for fi nancial investment. If you hold shares or have funds in superannuation, you may wish to investigate this issue further. Companies now have to consider future clean sourcing of water and ingredients, and these decisions impact directly on their shareholders. A newly opened Sydney bakery is the fi rst business in Australia to have a closed loop environmental system; all organic waste in processed on site into compost that is then made available to customers and suppliers; all grey water is used in the newly planted native garden; hives of bees on the rooftop produce honey for their cafes; and large storage onsite means less fl our packaging and fewer truck deliveries. These measures lead to cost cutting in rubbish and recycling removal. The Rockerfeller Brothers Fund withdrew from fossil fuel investments in September 2014 in favour of renewable energy sources. The Rockerfeller family are the heirs of a dynasty that made their money in oil. You can bet this decision was not made from a purely altruistic stand point; fi nancial advisors would

have seen divesting in fossil fuels as a sound fi nancial decision, as well as an ethical and a symbolic gesture regarding the future vision for the Fund.Responsible and ethical investors have pushed retailers and manufacturers to improve the treatment of Bangladesh garment workers after the collapse of the Rana Plaza building in 2013. Global investors have also been working to support the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil, which in turn protects the forests of Malaysia and Indonesia.Investment in businesses that are committed to sustainability is a sound fi nancial decision; the annual study by the Responsible Investment Association Australasia reveals a consistent margin of return above mainstream investments since 2002. The 2014 RIAA Benchmark Report for Australia and New Zealand states that, “Core responsible investment Australian equities funds have outperformed the ASX 300 index and the large cap Australian equities fund average over 1, 3, 5 and 10 years.” Food for thought as we head into 2015.http://www.mindbodygreen.com/0-16168/i-havent-made-any-trash-in-2-years-heres-what-my-life-is-like.html?http://www.bbc.com/news/magazine-29631332http://www.abc.net.au/news/2014-11-27/byron-bay-pushes-for-community-owned-clean-energy/5920272http://energytransition.de/2013/10/hamburg-citizens-buy-back-energy-grid/http://theweek.com/article/index/268613/why-the-rockefellers-are-betting-on-renewable-energy

Classical strains from a Shoalhaven Youth Orchestra quartet and a festively decorated hall welcomed 100 B&DGC members and guests to our annual Christmas party in December. With time and space to mingle and chat, a delicious meal of roasts and salads and the camaraderie that shared interests brings, the evening was a fi tting end to another enjoyable club year before the summer break. With the festive season now over, we are back out in the garden. During summer, early morning or evening is the preferable time to work with shaded areas given attention over the middle of the day. Watering in the morning rather than evening helps avoid fungal diseases. Do not prune sun damaged foliage yet as this still provides some protection for lower leaves. It may not be too late to make a gardener’s New Year’s resolution to create a shaded entertaining area before Christmas, 2015. This could be as simple as planting a tree or erecting a pergola over a seating area. Deciduous trees and climbers that will let in winter sun are preferable with the beautiful crepe myrtle tree, now fl owering around Berry, one obvious choice. Left unpruned, its attractive trunk patterns will become an added attraction in the garden. The Berry Show is upon us with a visit to the pavilion one of the highlights. B&DGC takes a keen interest in the fruit, vegetable, potted plants, cut fl owers and fl oral arrangement sections, sponsoring a number of awards. We particularly encourage entries of containers of pentas with the award named for our late life member, Betty Miles. Check the Berry Show schedule, stroll around your garden and see what you can enter. The new club year will be launched at a gathering for members in a Woodhill garden on Saturday, 14 February with the fi rst meeting for 2015 following on Tuesday, 17 February in St Luke’s Church hall, Princess Street, at 7.30 pm. The guest speaker, Suzanne Kingsford, will address the topic, “Landscaping with easy care roses”. The talk will focus on the use of roses in mixed garden beds in the English style, rather than separate more formal rose plantings. Suzanne has an extensive rose garden and nursery near Fitzroy Falls and will have some of her roses available for sale. To fi nd out more about our club, contact our secretary, Gail Paton, on 0413 893 508 or visit us on www.berrygardens.org.au Visitors to our meetings are always most welcome.

Some of them are in our own local community, others involve serving in other communities or overseas. A good example of this is the work of:BOB HANDBYIf you attended the 100th Birthday Party for the Berry branch of the Red Cross in August 2014 you will remember that Aust-ralian Red Cross water and sanitation specialist, aid worker and Australian Red Cross Ambassador, Bob Hanby was our guest speaker. He has come out of retirement as a water and sanitation specialist for the Red Cross

Horses were an integral part of the human journey to civilization and for many of us they remain a grand passion. Riders are like an International tribe. Although we follow different disciplines and have different breeds we are united by a connection to these remarkable animals. Those of us who ride out and about often encounter the phenomenon of children and adults who are fascinated by the sight of a horse. The Shoalhaven district sees a massive infl ux of tourists at this time of year and many of us are familiar with a passing car slowing down or stopping so the occupants can see our horses; we are regularly approached by city parents and children desperate to pat and interact with our mounts. The expression of wistfulness and excitement on the face of a young child having their fi rst physical encounter with a horse is memorable. Who knows where this fascination comes from? For many of us who came from non-horsy back grounds the love of horses seems almost intrinsic. Our fi rst experience ignites a lifelong love of the equine species. When Berry Riding Club is holding events at our ground we often meet people who were passing by and have come in to fi nd out more about the action. In this district we are fortunate that there are many opportunities for children and adults to learn to ride and join the Equestrian community. The organization “Ready, Steady, Trot” provides children without horses (and sometimes

and has been sent to Kono in Sierra Leone to help set up an Ebola treatment centre. A fresh outbreak of the disease has occurred there with at least 87 people dying. In a recent interview on the ABC he explained that the government is trying to restrict the movement of people in and out of affected areas in order to reduce the spread of the disease. Burying the bodies of those that have died from the disease is also important for this reason. The hospital has, however, been struggling recently as a number of nurses and ambulance drivers have been infected by the disease which has made some of the others scared to do their work.BECOMING A MEMBERIf you wish to fi nd out about becoming involved with or volunteering with the Red Cross contact the Berry Branch of the Red Cross (see Community Groups page of Town Crier for contact details), the Nowra Red Cross Offi ce (1800621433) in Graham St Nowra or go onto the Red Cross website.

establish the basics of horsemanship. There are several local riding schools and trail riding es-tablishments which give tourists and local people a taste of the pleasure and excitement of horse riding. Many of these people will go on to fi nd ways to include horses in their lives. Berry Riding Club offers opportunities for riders in all disciplines and at all levels to experience competition and training. Our Pink Ribbon Festival which was postponed due to bad weather will now be held at Berry Showground on the weekend of 21st and 22nd February. It presents a wonderful opportunity for all members of the community to drop in and have a look at horses and riders having fun and raising money for charity. Wear Pink!

Calisthenics is like having all your dance classes – plus physie, gymnastics, singing and acting - rolled into one! It is a competitive performance dance sport, unique to Australia, which develops strength, fl exibility, grace, confi dence and poise through a combination of dance (ballet, modern and folk), marching, gymnastics, singing, acting and apparatus manipulation (clubs and rods). Working in teams it combines the best aspects of sport and art. Children and adults of all ages thrive on the variety and challenges offered in the many facets of Calisthenics. The word calisthenics comes from the Greek words ‘kallos’ for beauty and ‘thenos’ for strength. Its components achieve those physical attributes, whilst also infl uencing the emotional and social development of girls and boys through friendship and teamwork. In their weekly cali class, pupils learn around six routines (one in each of its core disciplines; each with a different costume, each choreographed to music by their coach for them ) concurrently throughout a year, and present these on stage at competitions, concerts and displays.Calisthenics is the oldest and one of the fastest growing artistic sports. Public classes began in the 1880s in Victoria, about 20 years after Berry PS was opened and 25 years before the Berry School Of Arts was built, and took another 133 years to reach us here, with the inception of Diamond Calisthenics Club (DCC) in 2013. The brain child and fruit of the labours of a cali family who’d moved from Sydney, and their coach who couldn’t see them leave the sport, Berry’s own and only dance sport is growing from strength to strength. Great things are on

The Showgirl Competition The Showgirl Competition aims to fi nd a young woman to act as an ambassador for rural NSW. It is not a beauty pageant; the girls must have a genuine interest in, and knowledge of, rural NSW. The Competition encourages the participation and subsequent awareness of rural women’s’ contribution and involvement in

both local communities and rural NSW as a whole.

Contestants are judged on personality, confi dence, ambition, life goals, general knowledge, rural knowledge, presentation and speech. As part of their potential ambassadorial qualities, contestants are also judged on their involvement in, and experience of, rural affairs. This year the 127th Berry Show will

enjoy the energy, beauty and ideas of fi ve wonderful showgirl entrants.

The Berry Show Society wishes to thank Bendigo Bank, McGrath Real Estate, the Waddell family,Nowra Mazda, South Coast Register and all our other sponsors for supporting the Showgirl competition.

The Greatest Show in Town Friday 30th & Saturday 31st January 2015

It’s on again, The Greatest Show in Town!

We have another great show in store for our 127th! After some successful changes to the program in 2014 we are happy to once again bring a showcase of ‘The Best of Berry and Beyond’. On Friday morning we will have the Dairy Cattle show with our special international guest judge. The showjumping will also be underway early, so don’t miss your chance to see some of the states best athletes and their horses compete. During the day visit the pavilion, see Beau Mullins teach his dogs to work sheep and Greg Glasgow and his stockhorses. On Friday afternoon bring your children and animals along for the Children’s Pet Show and stay to watch the woodchips fly and enjoy live entertainment at the Axemen & Sawyers Bar. Then the Friday night spectacular, the WILD RODEO.

Start your Saturday with a stop off at the Beef Cattle Show, then head on over to the best Animal Nursery around. Don’t miss the goats or the poultry or the pavilion and set yourself up under the Grandstand and enjoy the culinary delights and hospitality of the Berry Show Ladies Auxiliary. The main ring will be alive with horses, cattle, community groups, floats and tractors at lunch for the Grand Parade and the fun is only getting started. Saturday afternoon the entertainment doesn’t stop, there’s the haymaking demonstration, FMX, working dogs, Beaut Utes, stockhorses, Young Farmer Challenge Final, Berry Showgirl announcement and the fireworks spectacular! Find out more at www.berryshow.org.au, like our Facebook page or follow us on Twitter. So put on your hat, pull on your boots and checked shirt and let’s all Get Country for the 127th Berry Show!

Warmest Regards, The Berry Show Committee & The Ladies Auxiliary

Welcome to Mainly Music; this will recommence in the fi rst term on Tuesday the 3rd February. We start at 10.00am and go through until approximately 11.30 am each week. The cost is $5.00 per family each time and we would love you to come along with your children and join in the fun. You will fi nd us at Berry Community Church, 8 Schofi elds Lane Berry .The children and parents/carers all join in the morning session with opportunities to sing, dance and play. The children have the opportunity to learn new songs, movements, language and intellectual development during these sessions. In a feel-safe environment, children will attempt new tasks, make mistakes and try again. Music, with its built in repetitions, add reassurance to the child so that they are able to predict and anticipate. Children learning a new language often learn words and concepts faster within a musical song rather than through purely spoken word. The sessions enhance the development of all children.

He is a former Police Offi cer and Australian Army Offi cer who has served in Afghanistan (two rotations) and East Timor as a Major. He is married to a local GP and they have two small children and live in Gerroa.Glenn has been working hard, listening to the community and their issues and concerns. He has a vision for our community and our future and he has a plan to implement that vision. The liberal Government are making cuts to TAFE and local schools; they have made our local train services worse and more expensive; they are selling off the poles and wires for our electricity system (delivering nothing for our region and costing the State a steady stream of revenue); they are not providing necessary funds for our health system in our hospitals and our ambulance services. They are not a good government for our community.Glenn will fi ght for better services for our growing region – education, police, public transport, utilities and more. He will also fi ght for sustainability and to protect our natural heritage.Glenn would like to meet you and hear your views too.Through a series of street stalls, door knocking, telephoning, discussion groups, community groups and public meetings as well as through his Facebook page, Newsletter and web page Glenn is listening and responding to our community. His vision and his plans for our future will be set out and communicated in the next weeks leading up to the election at the end of March.

This will preserve the current agricultural belt south of the Elambra Estate, which is vital to the local

agriculture, tourism and local businesses; and will also protect the environment in that area. (The Liberals, and in particular Gareth Ward, have said they will never allow the boundaries to meet, but have not ruled out development on that land, and have refused to answer how close

they will allow the boundaries to get to each other).● Labor will reinstate Jervis Bay Marine Park’s protected status, and will lift the Liberals’ general moratorium on creating new Marine Parks. This will lead to increased fi shing stocks along

the Kiama coastline.● Labor will keep TAFE fees at current 2014 levels; will restrict the amount of funding available for private operators to contest to 30%; and will do away with the Smart & Skilled programme,

which has cut a lot of courses from TAFE, including many apprenticeship programmes.● Labor will ban Coal Seam Gas mining in drinking water catchment areas; and will place a moratorium on all CSG mining in NSW until the Chief Scientist is satisfi ed that CSG mining has

been proven to be safe. More policies will be announced over the next weeks leading up to the election.

Vegetation along the New Highway: It will be noticed that the Princes Highway realignment project from Toolijooa to Berry has commenced. The most notable aspect of this is the removal of many mature trees from in and, in some places, outside the new alignment. This is necessary if we are to rid Berry of the heavy through traffi c. The landscaping that will be part of the project will include the planting of trees, shrubs and grasses along the road verges. The RMS will take responsibility for the ongoing maintenance of this vegetation. Those areas disturbed outside the alignment such as ancillary, storage and stockpile areas will be restored back to their as found state. The contractor Fulton and Hogan is responsible for this work. The contract for the work requires the planting to be local native plants propagated from local seed stock. Many of these plants are not generally to be found in commercial nurseries. This is a bold and unique undertaking by the RMS. Large numbers of seedlings will be required and these require long lead times to be produced. The propagation of local native plants has been going on in Berry and other areas of the Illawarra for many years but not at the scale that will meet the needs of this project. Landcare is has been interested in this idea of using Native Stock since it has been engaged in discussions with the RMS during the planning stage of the project. Illawarra Landcare is signifi cantly involved with the contractor in meeting the specifi ed requirements of the works. Members of Berry Landcare are also collecting seed and propagating seedlings. Native plants can be very diffi cult to propagate. Collection needs

LANDCARE BERRYto be at exactly the right time to be fertile but not taken by birds. Often propagation can only start if the seeds are processed in a very specifi c way. Anyone interested learning how and when to gather native seed and how to propagate them please contact Lyn Clark (4464 3911).

Weed and Native of the Month:Asparagus Fern: Not actually a fern. A many branched perennial herb with a dense covering of fi ne pine-like foliage with scattered spines above ground and a dense mat of tuberous roots underground. It reproduces vegetatively and from seed. Flowers are white or pale pink and fruit is a red globular berry. It is dispersed by birds and dumping of garden refuse. A major problem in many areas. Remove all tubers when digging it out.Prickly Rasp Fern. Pretty little fern with bright pinky-orange new growth makes a good ground cover for a shady site. It will tolerate full sun and is drought tolerant. Spreads by underground runners.

A PROJECT OF THE BERRY UNITING CHURCH

BERRY MEN’S SHEDWORKING TOGETHER FOR A BETTER BERRYMembers of the Shed, along with representatives of Fulton Hogan, and MP Gareth Ward at the handing over of the fi rst consignment of 20 nesting boxes. In December, members of the Berry Men’s Shed handed over the fi rst consignment of nesting boxes to Fulton Hogan who are responsible for the construction of the by-pass.The nesting boxes are designed to house animals that will be displaced as part of the roadwork construction.Shed secretary, Richard Wiseman, said Fulton Hogan approached the Shed to ask them to construct 45 nesting boxes for a variety of animals. There are 14 different types of animals all requiring different size nesting boxes. Fulton Hogan’s Andrew McRae said that this was an opportunity for us to engage with the community.Local member Gareth Ward also attended the handing over and said that it was a successful story for the environment and the community. The Shed is working on the next order of nesting boxes due for completion at the end of February. The Shed held its Christmas Party in December at the Berry Bowling Club where Chairman Peter Johnstone bestowed awards to long serving members George Gray and Allan Armstrong along with Grahame Hepper. The major award, the Tardis trophy, was awarded to John Winlaw for his consistent attendance and work ethic during the year. The party was attended by over 60 members and guests.Once again the Berry Men’s Shed will be sponsoring the Woodwork section at the Berry Show and we welcome as many entries as possible. Our fi rst health talk will be held on Thursday 19th March as part of Seniors week and our guest speaker will focus on living a healthy lifestyle. More details will be in the March newsletter. On 28th March as part of the State Election the Shed will be holding a garage sale and raffl e at the polling booth located at the Berry Uniting Church.

The Shed is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 9.00am – 4.00pm Phone 4464 3956.

A new year has begun and we now move onto the challenges, hopes and aspirations of the new year ahead. 2015! What will it bring? The year 2104 ended with a most successful street stall, one that the Berry community and its many visitors supported. Thank you. Congratulations to our two raffl e winners – Jackie Cooper 1st prize and Louise Miller 2nd prize. Congratulation also to our members who received certifi cates for the various Land Cookery competition. We fi nished our year with a succulent and delicious meal at the Nowra TAFE Destiny Cafe.

Heather Darlington from the Bendigo Bank came to our last meeting for the year 2014 and presented the Berry CWA Branch with a $2000 cheque to help towards our renovations. We were most appreciative and thankful for their generous gift.

Congratulations to the following young people who are grandchildren of Berry CWA members in receiving monetary awards and scholarships to help further their education:

Bianca Morgan to further her education as a third year student in Hospitality at Nowra TAFE

(Cynthia Druitt Grant)

Mia Wright-Miller and Jackson Bamber receiving the Ing Family Berry Lions Scholarship.

“Life is like a bicycle – to keep your balance you must keep on moving”− ALBERT EINSTEIN

Our Quiz master extraordinaire Sandra prepared a trivia quiz to start our minds a-thinking about the Anzacs as we celebrated Australia Day. This year will be one of many memories as we search our history in World War I.

Our aprons and food gloves were needed yet again as our members prepared sandwiches for the many hungry mouths attending the Berry Show. Our members did not put away their cooking bowls and aprons or their needles and thread as we needed a full stocked Stall at the Berry Show. A big thank you to all our willing ladies who help make our stalls the success that they are.

The positives of our new year were tinged with great sadness as we learned of the passing of our loved International Offi cer Mrs Lorraine van der Lubbe on December 30th after a short illness. She will be remembered for her tireless work in the international fi eld and her involvement with the Berry School children. We celebrated her life with an afternoon tea at the Berry CWA rooms. She will be sorely missed.

With another year so quickly upon us, I fi rstly wish to thank all those generous folk who supported our last street stall, all I can say is the total was amazing. Thank you once again. When we tell folk we are raising money for the leprosy mission a general reaction is, ‘Oh I thought that was only in the bible?’ or comments similar. There are many unanswered questions in the fi eld of leprosy, from the mechanism of transmission, to the reasons why some people get severe nerve damage despite good treatment, to the best ways to reduce the stigma of leprosy in a community. In order to address these questions TLM has a research strategy which tries to prioritise some of the topics and states how they will manage research. Because research is complex, requiring a wide variety of resources and skills, TLM collaborates with universities and other research groups. TLM is able to contribute access to many people affected by leprosy through the programmes around the world. TLM plays a central role in global research such as the effort to monitor and prevent the emergence of drug resistance in leprosy, the prevention on leprosy in contact through chemoprophylaxis and /or a vaccine, and the research for better treatments for leprosy reactions. Research on local issues is also important, such as why people delay for months or years before seeking treatment; often local traditions and beliefs are crucial in answering such questions. TLM seeks to be a learning organisation, in which research helps us improve the way we serve people affected by leprosy. If you would like to become a member of our group in Berry we would love your support. Our fi rst meeting for the year is on Thursday the 26th February at 1.30pm, held at 17 Gwenda Ave., Berry. For more in information please contact Trish Nicholson on 44641693.

LAST YEAREnded on a high note – indeed several high notes - with the Zonta Choir giving renditions of Christmas Carols at Bupa and David Berry Hospital and in the street for the Berry Merry Christmas night. And for the lucky attendants of the Zonta Christmas party, a special presentation from the musical “Cabaret” when the girls let down their hair, butdid not kick up their legs, and generally provided a lot of fun for all concerned. Generous donations were also made during the evening in support of Cambodian Dalin Eng, who, as a sole teacher in the Dump in Phnom Penh is struggling to educate some of the children living there. Zontian Rosalie Fletcher told of her heart-wrenching meeting with this brave young woman who lives in unimaginably poor conditions.

AND THIS YEARShaping up well already with the Big Breakfast planned to celebrate International Women’s Day, again to be held at Mountain Ridge Winery on Saturday, March 7, commencing at 8.30am. Last year this event sold out very quickly, so don’t be disappointed, book and pay ASAP with Carole Cassidy on 0408 997 780 using BSB 082 435 A/C139 7013.Members and friends (including the blokes) will be most welcome, and we promise some interesting life stories from our guest speakers, great entertainment and a delicious breakfast.

WARDROBE CLEARING TIMEYes, get ruthless – clear out those unwanted clothes from your wardrobes ready for the Zonta Pre-Loved Clothing Sale coming up on Sunday, 3rd May, under the Showground Grandstand. Any clean clothing in good condition is welcome, and that includes jewellery, shoes and handbags. This event has proved to be a very successful fund-raiser for our various good works, so your donations would be greatly appreciated. For arrangements for collection, please contact Mary Seelis on 4464 1191.
