WELCOME to

the seventh edition of The Falkner Flyer. Today is the 75th Anniversary of VE Day, a hugely significant day in the history of this country. With this in mind we will be exploring the concept of rebuilding and fresh starts in a number of different ways. ON THIS DAY:

May 8th 1945 VE Day. World War II ended in Europe after Germany signed an unconditional surrender. Upon the defeat of Germany, celebrations erupted throughout the western world, especially in Great Britain and North America. More than one million people celebrated in the streets throughout Great Britain to mark the end of the European part of the war. In London, crowds massed in Trafalgar Square and up the Mall to Buckingham Palace, where King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, accompanied by Prime Minister Winston Churchill, appeared on the balcony of the palace before the cheering crowds. Princess Elizabeth (the future Queen

Elizabeth II) and her sister Princess Margaret were allowed to wander incognito among the crowds and take part in the celebrations.

FAMOUS PERSON: HILLARY CLINTON

Born: 26th October 1947

Hillary Clinton served as First Lady of the United States from 1993 to 2001, and as a United States senator for New York from 2001 to 2009, and also as the 67th United States secretary of state from 2009 until 2013. was representing the Democrats - the same party as the President at the time, Barack Obama. While she did not win the Presidential race - the Republican candidate Donald Trump was elected - she inspired millions of girls and women all over the world. At the end of 2017, she sat down with a group of young girls for Teen Vogue. She told the group that she did not plan to go for the job again, but that she would be supporting other people who wanted to do so - especially young women. She has ambitions to leave her mark on the future, and hopes to support future leaders build an America where equality, diversity and freedom are celebrated. Her speech, following her loss in the Presidential election, is a wonderful example of grace and composure in defeat, and its’ message is uplifting and positive. (Click on her photo on the

FAMOUS PERSON: LEONARDO DA VINCI (Contributed by Mrs Kelly)

• Occupation: Artist, Architect, Builder, Inventor, Scientist

• Born: 15th April 1452, in Vinci, Italy

• Died: 2nd May 1519, in Amboise, Kingdom of France

• Famous works: Mona Lisa, The Last Supper, The Vitruvian Man

• Style/Period: High Renaissance

Leonardo da Vinci, the son of a lawyer, was one of the most talented people to have ever lived. He was a painter, an inventor, a musician, an engineer, an architect, a geologist, an anatomist, a mathematician, a botanist and a sculptor. Incredibly, he excelled in every single one of those disciplines. He was not a ‘giver upper’. People call Leonardo a painter, but the truth is, he was very much more than that. He is believed to have only produced about 30 paintings in total, with only 15 works of art surviving today. His most famous paintings are the ‘Mona Lisa’ which now hangs in The Louvre, Paris and ‘The Last Supper’ which he was requested to paint for the monastery of Santa Maria Delle Grazie in Milan. It took Leonardo 14 years to complete the Mona Lisa and he never handed it over to the person who commissioned it. He is said to have carried it around with him everywhere he went in later life.

Can you write backwards? Leonardo da Vinci often wrote backwards (known as mirror writing). Some say this was to keep his ideas secret. Perhaps you could try it out and create a secret code or diary for yourself. As well as writing backwards, he is also said to have perfected the art of writing with both hands at the same time; one forward and the other one backward. Try it at home, see if you can master it!

A prolific inventor, Leonardo da Vinci’s inventions included plans for a canon, a machine gun, a helicopter, a tank, the double hull, musical instruments, a clockwork car, hydraulic pumps, a steam canon, floating snowshoes, an underwater breathing apparatus and a lot more! (Click on images for more information, videos and the Leonardo Da Vinci Museum)

Vitruvian Man is Leonardo’s most famous drawing. It is said to be the most anatomically correct drawing of a man of its’ time. Here are some of his famous drawings from his sketchbooks.

If all this work had been published in an intelligible form, da Vinci's place as a pioneering scientist would have been beyond dispute. Yet his true genius was not as a scientist or an artist, but as a combination of the two: an 'artist-engineer'. His painting was scientific, based on a deep understanding of the workings of the human body and the physics of light and shade. His science was expressed through art, and his drawings and diagrams show what he meant, and how he understood the world to work.

Get Back Up Again – From Trolls (Sung by Anna Kendrick) (Click on image for YouTube link) LYRICS: Hey!

I'm not giving up today

There's nothing getting in my way

And if you knock knock me over

I will get back up again, oh

If something goes a little wrong

Well you can go ahead and bring it on

'Cause if you knock knock me over, I will get back

up again.

ART: Prompt (Provided by Mrs Ter Averst) You can interpret the prompt left however you like, using paints, pencils, collage or even 3D. Be as creative as you can!

This week’s art prompt is pink.

How many different shades of pink can you find in your house? How many different shades of pink can you mix with red and white paint? Is it still pink if you add in another primary colour like yellow or blue?

Maybe you could take inspiration from artists Bob and Roberta Smith and make a pink on pink painting like the multi coloured picture above.

Thanks to the passion for the arts and the patronage of the Medici and della Rovere families (connected through the marriage, in 1634, of Ferdinando II de’ Medici and Vittoria della Rovere, who as a dowry brought the enormous art collection of the duchy of Urbino to Florence), the Uffizi’s collection of Venetian paintings of the 1500s are amongst the most important in the world. The galleries dedicated to them were restored and opened in 2019. Look out for this famous painting by Mrs Kelly’s famous person of the week Leonardo Di Vinci.

Whom neither shape or danger can dismay, Nor thought of tender happiness betray; Who, not content that former worth stand fast, Looks forward, persevering to the last, From well to better, daily self-surpast: Who, whether praise of him must walk the earth For ever, and to noble deeds give birth, Or he must fall, to sleep without his fame, And leave a dead unprofitable name— Finds comfort in himself and in his cause; And, while the mortal mist is gathering, draws His breath in confidence of Heaven's applause: This is the happy Warrior; this is he That every man in arms should wish to be.

SARAH’S SMOKEY BACON & CHEDDAR CHEESE QUICHE Serves 4 to 6 people INGREDIENTS For the pastry:

• 110g plain flour

• 60g cold butter

• 1 egg For the filling:

• 150g smoked streaky bacon, crispy cooked & chopped

• 75g grated mature Cheddar

• 3 large eggs plus 1 for glazing the pastry

• 275ml double cream

• Salt and freshly milled black pepper EQUIPMENT:

• 1 loose base quiche tin approx. 18cm

• a baking sheet

• strong kitchen foil approx. 40cm square

METHOD Making the shortcrust pastry:

1. Place the flour and seasoning in a

large mixing bowl, cut the cold

butter into small cubes into the flour.

2. You will now need to use the

‘rubbing in technique’ to mix the

butter & flour together until it

resembles fine breadcrumbs

3. (Rubbing in technique; using just the

tips of your fingers & thumb to

break the cubes of butter up into

ever smaller pieces.)

4. Now add the egg to the breadcrumb

mixture & mix together to form a

smooth dough, (you may need to add

a very small amount of cold water, if

it is not forming a dough ball)

5. Then clingfilm pastry and leave to

rest in the refrigerator for 30

minutes, before rolling out.

6. Place the chilled pastry onto a

floured surface & roll out to approx.

28cm round & the thickness of a

pound coin, then carefully roll the

pastry round the rolling pin and

transfer it to the centre of the tin

7. Now, using your hands, gently press

the pastry into the tin to line the base

and sides making sure you ease the

pastry into the corners and press it

against the sides.

8. Then trim off any excess pastry

around the top edge with a sharp

knife. After that use your fingers

again to press the sides of the pastry

so it is slightly higher than the tin.

9. With a fork prick the base all over,

this will release any trapped air,

which is what causes the centre to

rise up. Then pop it in the freezer to

chill for 30 minutes.

10. Pre-heat the oven to 190°C gas mark

5 with the baking sheet on the shelf

nearest the centre.

11. Once the pastry case is frozen put it

on a flat surface. Place a piece of foil

over the top of the pastry then press

the foil into the base and sides of the

pastry, then fold any excess foil back

inwards against the sides of the

pastry to create a double layer to

support & hold the pastry in place

whilst it cooks.

12. Put the pastry case onto the pre-

heated tray in the oven and bake for

15 minutes. Then remove the pastry

case from the oven and ease the

sides of the foil inwards and carefully

lift it away from the pastry case.

13. Brush the base and sides all over

with some extra beaten egg, which

will provide a sort of moisture-proof

coating so that the pastry stays

beautifully crisp even after the filling

has been added.

14. Now return the pastry case to the

oven for 8 minutes.

The filling:

1. Meanwhile in a large jug or bowl

whisk together the eggs and cream

with a little salt and some freshly

milled black pepper.

2. Remove the cooked pastry case from

the oven and reduce the oven

temperature to 180°C, gas mark 4,

then fill the pastry case by layering

up the grated cheese and crispy

chopped bacon.

3. Next pour the egg mixture all over

the bacon and cheese filling.

4. Carefully put the quiche back into

the oven with the baking tray, and

bake for 35 minutes or until the

surface is golden brown, and the

filling has set. You can test this with

your little finger carefully, if it’s not

set it will still feel liquid.

5. Once cooked remove from the oven

and leave to rest in the tin for at least

10 minutes. Then place the quiche

on an upturned bowl and gently slide

the tin downwards, use a palette

knife gently to slide the quiche from

the metal base of the tin, onto a

cooling rack or serving platter.

Enjoy!

PRAYER: (Idea suggested by Mrs A)

Thank you for the moments of courage that you give me so that I can live a life of meaning, not comfort. Thank you for the moments when I am aware of my many faults, not so that I can wallow in guilt, but so that I can tap into your grace and mercy. Thank you for sending angels to wrestle with me, building my resilience and teaching me to hold on to what is good. I pray that you would give me strong ankles for the times when I walk on rocky ground. I pray that you would give me a strong heart for the times when pain would otherwise break my spirit. And I pray that even in the darkest night, I will be looking to the light that’s coming. APP: NOTE FROM THE EDITOR: Mind Moose is a web app. Children go on a journey of discovery with Mind Moose and his animal friends. They explore more about themselves and different coping mechanisms so that in times of stress they know what helps them relax and what makes them feel happy. The app draws on different elements of psychology to help to develop character, resilience and self-confidence. One parent commented: “Mind Moose was a gentle but effective way to get our son to stand back and reflect on what he was getting out of the key relationships in his life. This gave him the insight and the courage to

choose his friends more wisely. We think this was a pivotal part of helping him start to rebuild his self-esteem.”

MEGAN RAPINOE This week ladies and gents, we are talking about one of, if not the greatest female football player of all time: Megan Rapinoe. Now you may not have heard her name before, but I am sure you will recognise her as she is known for her colourful hair and energy on and off the field.

(Click on Megan’s photo above for a montage of all

of Megan’s goals at the world cup last year)

Megan has won a ludicrous number of awards and medals in her career. She won the FIFA best women's player and the Ballon d’Or (the highest honour in football) in 2019. She won Olympic Gold in 2012. In 2015 and in 2019 she won the FIFA World Cup which she also co-captained. The USWNT (United States Women’s National Team) is widely known to be the best women's football team in the world and has held that position for a long time. Megan has dominated at club level both in the US and in France and now is back in the US and captains the OL Reign.

THE FALKNER FLYER EDITION SEVEN: 08.05.2020

“Mr Greenlees, why are you telling us about Megan?” I hear you ask. Well let me tell you. This week the USWNT (United States Women’s National Team) lost a legal battle with the US Soccer Federation over equal pay. This means that they thought women were being unfairly paid for their achievements and wanted to be paid the same as the men's team. But unfortunately the court said that they would not receive equal pay. This is so shocking because as you have read above the USWNT is immensely successful and continue to dominate each and every year. If you compare these achievements to the achievements of the US men’s football team (or lack of achievements), then why shouldn’t they be paid equally or even more than their male counterparts? Moreover, this is not just a dispute with FIFA or some other governing group this is a dispute with the team’s bosses! The people who have been enjoying their success for so long! However, the USWNT have appealed the decision. They may have lost this battle but it is hopeful they will win their case in the future. So Megan is not only inspirational as a dominant female athlete, but also as a woman who is standing up against the injustices within her sport and campaigning for what is right!

FINAL THOUGHT: As we head into the Bank Holiday weekend, throughout the country people are continuing to raise money and awareness for the NHS, as they continue to fight the corona virus pandemic.

In the Falkner Flyer we have seen a number of people do their bit and raise funds; Miss Benini, Miss Brown and Dr Taylor. We have also seen some wonderful examples of

artwork and baking created by Falkner House children to raise spirits to thank the staff on the ground for all their hard work and efforts. This week I wish to draw attention to two more of our very own girls.

Evelyn in Year 6 and her sister Jacqueline, a Falkner House alumnus, have made 32 customised face masks (see image opposite) for their friends last month. They have also donated 40 masks to Whittington Hospital and £200 to Masks for NHS Heroes!

But they would like to do more…

So on the 17th May 2020 they will play their cellos in a Zoom concert to continue this fundraising effort. They will be playing Barriere’s Sonata for two Cellos

Please click on their picture below for more information and to support this wonderful effort.
