Siblings in Christ,

It has been good to see you as we have slowly opened our building. I love seeing folks out at the

lake service and in our worship space. I am also thankful for you who do not yet feel comfortable

to gather together as we worship our risen Lord. There is no right answer to when we gather and it

is important that we give folks permission to enter into whatever our new normal looks like at

your own pace.

In the newness of it all and even with questions of what ministry might look like today and in the

future, the ministry of Lutheran Church of our Redeemer continues.

Here are some of the ministry that continue to happen. It might look different, but bringing Christ

to the community and to our members remains a priority.

Six weeks of food distribution is being held in our parking lot. Around 480 food boxes are

given out each week to food insecure families.

We were unable to do First Communion classes during Lent, so we gathered those kids

and parents outside to learn and receive communion.

We had a Parking Lot Party the last Wednesday of July as a way to gather people for fun,

games, and food while still maintaining physical distance.

Plans are being made for “God’s Work. Our Hands.” It will look different this year, but the

work of God will still be done.

These are just a few of the ways we at LCOOR are partnering in ministry. You are the light of

Christ in our world. Thank you for the ministry you do with our congregation and in your day to

day life.

Join the Letter-writing Fun!

During this pandemic, we search for ways to stay connected.

Women of the ELCA's letter-writing campaign, Dear Friend in

Christ, is one way to enjoy conversation with a new friend.

Here is how to write a letter to a Dear Friend in Christ:

1. Write a letter. Use the “Dear Friend in Christ” salutation. Fill a page or

two, however you are inspired. Among other things, please share your thoughts

on these questions: How is your faith in Jesus Christ sustaining you during the

global pandemic? What words of encouragement can you offer the person who

receives your letter?

2. You can handwrite or type the letter.

3. You could include a drawing, a photo, or a recipe, anything that fits into an envelope.

4. Offer up a prayer for the recipient.

5. You may include your mailing address in the letter if you do not wish to remain anonymous.

6. You may obtain a release form from Jodi in the church office or online at https://

www.womenoftheelca.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/DFICpermfill.pdf Print and sign

the Dear Friend in Christ release form. We cannot exchange letters without a release.

7. Mail your letter and signed release form to Dear Friend in Christ, Women of the ELCA, 8765 W

Higgins Road, Chicago IL 60631. Deadline for mailing letters to the churchwide organization is

October 15, 2020.

What else do I need to know?

1. When you write to Dear Friend in Christ, your letter will be swapped with a letter from another writ-

er. They will get your letter; you will get their letter. The exchange is anonymous (unless you pro-

vide your contact information), so you can share as little or as much information about yourself as

you like.

2. Dear Friend in Christ is open to all participants, although writers under 18 must have parental

consent found on the release form.

3. Letters are paired at random, and we will try to match participants with someone in a different

geographical part of the ELCA. Women of the ELCA staff read all letters before the exchange hap-

pens.

4. Letters will be mailed to participants on a rolling basis, beginning in June 2020. We will continue

exchanging letters received through All Saints Day, November 1, 2020.

Our “BE THE LIGHT” Challenge Still Shines

During July, we encouraged families and individuals to “Be the Light” in the

lives of others. Thanks to everyone who stepped up and completed several

of the suggestions on our check list. It was great seeing you in action! A big

thanks, also, to the High School Youth and Philip for their motivating camp-

fire video!

We witnessed neighbors helping neighbors with yard work. We saw you

smiling and offering your place in line to others. We saw original artwork

being mailed and delivered simply to brighten another’s day!

We’ve also spotted some “Be the Light” stickers on car windows in the church parking lot – and

around town! Let’s continue to let our lights shine in the lives of others well beyond these summer

months.

“Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” Matthew 5:16

New Members Welcome

New members are always welcome! Things look a little different right now due to COVID-19… so we

don’t have a certain date set to formally welcome new members. If you (or others you know) are inter-

ested in joining our LCOOR family, please contact Twila in the church office (605-886-2696). We look

forward to meeting you!

Caring Committee Update

Praise the Lord for all you good and faithful servants who have helped bake and deliver cookies to

New Members, sent Caring Cards to our members, and Sunday School cards to our kids! We want to

thank you from the bottom of our hearts! This quiet ministry has been a true blessing for over ten

years, and we are grateful for everyone who has helped in the joyful endeavor! We are going to step

aside, but if you would like to help in anyway, please contact Jodi or Twila in the church office.

May God richly bless you all!

God’s Work. Our Hands: Be The Light

Many hands make “light” work! Our traditional “God’s Work. Our Hands” event, typically held on a

September Sunday, will have a different look this fall – and will likely impact more lives than ever

before.

First of all, why wait until September?

There are plenty of ways we can “BE THE LIGHT” in people’s lives right now. Organizers have begun

to compile several projects that can be done as “take home” tasks! Instead of gathering in one loca-

tion, we’ll be spreading the light in many new ways!

Starting in AUGUST:

GWOH “Be the Light Door Décor” – Open to all ages! Our goal is to provide artwork for each

resident’s door in our senior living communities featuring “scenes from nature.” (Cardstock

pages and guidelines will be available at The Welcome Center at church.) The collected art-

work will be delivered to facilities throughout the community after September 20th.

GWOH “Be the Light -- With Books” – Drop off a few gently used books at church! These will

be used for a “God’s Work. Our Hands” project on Sunday, Sept. 20th.

Looking ahead to SEPTEMBER:

A Blood Drive will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 20.

Baskets created by the LCOOR Fellowship Committee will be delivered by volunteers.

A variety of take-home project kits are being prepared for pick up on Sunday, Sept. 20!

If you have questions, please call Lynn Langer (605-880-4233), Paige Sullivan (605-520-3997) or

Twila Schmitt (605-886-2696). Please stay tuned for upcoming announcements! Be The Light!

18As he walked by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon, who

is called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea –

for they were fishermen. 19And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will

make you fish for people.” - Matthew 4:18-19

Five teams participated in the League this year. We fished Lake Peli-

can, Goose Lake and Lake Kampeska. To some it didn’t matter whether

the fish were biting as the nights, themselves, were (mostly) beautiful!

Here are this year’s results:

Walleye Other 1. Tim Chandler / Burt Andersh / 1. Tim Moes / Rod Thompson / Neal Larsen (25.24 lbs.) Chuck Langner (13.39 lbs.) 2. Ron & Robbyn Givens / Judi Allen / 2. Greg Dubois / Brian Bak (3.96 lbs.) Steve Pickerl (17.45 lbs.) 3. Tim Chandler / Burt Andersh / 3. Greg Dubois / Brian Bak (12.05 lbs.) Neal Larsen (0.96 lbs.)

“This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine!” This catchy tune may be one of the first songs I remember from Sunday School. We were all encour-

aged to hold up our pointer finger as our “light” – and sing at the top of our lungs. After singing, we’d

gather around the short tables and the little chairs designed for our preschool statures and learn

about the colorful stories of Jesus.

“This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine!” As we grew into elementary students, this song started to seem a little childish. After all, we had

grown too dignified to “hide our lights under a bushel.” And we certainly weren’t going to “blow” on

our finger lights as the words “Don’t let Satan ((woosh)) it out” were sung. Once in our classroom,

however, we listened to more stories from the bible and memorized the verses from our lessons.

We began to learn about ways we could help people we had never even met.

“This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine!” Once we were in junior high (now known as middle school), we began singing much cooler songs. For

instance, “I’d like to teach the world to sing, in perfect harmony…I’d like to hold it in my arms and

keep it company…” Looking back, I’m thankful for a music leader who found songs we still enjoyed.

While our mid-week confirmation instruction was straight-laced and serious, we still looked forward

to Sunday morning music and the lessons that followed.

“Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine!” For me, and for many of the small town families I grew up with, Sunday morning attendance at

church and Sunday School was never presented as an option. From preschool through high school,

“This Little Light of Mine” was always there to guide us. The boys and girls of my early years are now

permanently enshrined in our confirmation photo displayed with decades of other photos at Grace

Lutheran Church in Bruce, SD. And, I’m certain that if you look extra close, you can see our little

lights shining!

“Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in

heaven.” – Matthew 5:16

One of my all-time favorite treats has to be popcorn balls. Won’t you join me in making a batch with

Youth Ministry and Christian Education

Activities for the month of August will be similar to previous summer months. As school resumes

and we move into September, weekly youth activities will change up a little bit.

For now, August youth activities are as follows…

HS Campfire Devotions – Mondays at 8:30pm around the fire pit at church.

We gather around an awesome fire and enjoy fellowship and devotions. Campfire

devotions will meet on Monday, August 3. 10 & 24 (we will not meet on the 17th).

Lawn Chair HS Deeper – Wednesdays at 7:30pm outside of the office entrance

to the church. This is a time for more in-depth Bible study and discussion. Lawn Chair

Deeper will meet on Wednesday, August 5, 12, & 26 (we will not meet on the 19th).

HS Coffee & Conversation – Fridays at 10:30am at Gather. This is an op-

portunity to just hang out and enjoy awesome fellowship and conversations. C & C

will meet on August 7 & 14 (we will not meet on the 21st or 28th)

On Mondays and Wednesdays, youth usually arrive at least a half-hour early and stay after our activi-

ty to hang out to play Ga Ga Ball, 4 – Square or basketball. You are more than welcome to do the

same!

I look forward to seeing a bunch of you during the month of August. Remember, friends are always

welcome!

Philip Lickei – Youth Director

First Communion Class

We had First Communion Clas-

ses outside July 15th and 16th.

It consisted of learning

about the sacraments, followed by a 15 minute worship service,

where the children received their First Holy Communion.

**We will have our planning meeting in August to discuss Church School. We will send out registra-

tion, post on Facebook and make announcements during worship, to inform you of Christian Educa-

tion for the fall.

Enjoy the rest of your summer, and hope to see you all soon.

Mission of the Month for August

Pueblo de Dios A bilingual church in central Sioux Falls, SD

Pueblo de Dios is a congregation of English speakers and Spanish speakers in Sioux Falls, South

Dakota. Each Sunday they gather to worship together as one people – the people of God. Many of

the families speak Spanish at home and English at work and school, or have one parent that pre-

fers English and one parent that prefers Spanish. Each Sunday they read, pray, and declare their

beliefs together – no matter what language is spoken.

Worship In This Time of Pandemic

We continue worship on the shores of Lake

Kampeska at Memorial Park. Lake worship is at

9:00 a.m. each Sunday through Labor Day Week-

end. Here is a reminder of a few ways we are

helping to keep you safe while worshipping:

Families and individuals continue to be asked

to socially distance from other family groups

and individuals.

Masks are suggested, although not required.

A long-handled minnow net offering is availa-

ble before and after worship. Just drop your

offering in as you come or go.

On Communion Sundays your family group

will be handed the communion elements.

Just hang on to these until communion time

within the worship service.

Singing by the congregation is not encour-

aged. Volunteer singers sing for the congrega-

tion.

Worship inside the sanctuary on Saturdays at

5:30 p.m. and Sundays at 10:30 a.m. continues

as well. The same precautions are being taken

as at the lake with the addition of:

Every other pew is taped off and unavailable

for seating.

Hand sanitizer is available just inside the

south church doors.

Offering plates are available as you come or

go from worship just outside the sanctuary

doors.

All doors to the sanctuary will be kept open to

reduce touch points.

The air handling system has been pro-

grammed to circulate fresh outside air, as

opposed to recirculating the air inside the

building.

Singing and communion is being handled

very similarly to lake worship.

Also remember that if you enjoy a cup of coffee

during worship at the lake, you are encouraged

to bring your own from home. Coffee and cookies

will not be provided at any worship service.

Spending time socializing is also discouraged to

increase everyone’s safety.

If you are not comfortable joining us for worship

in person, please join us virtually. The 10:30 a.m.

Sunday service will be live streamed each week.

Just go to www.lcoorwatertown.org and click on

the live streaming link.

Although we are keeping volunteers to a mini-

mum, Head Ushers, Singers and Sound & Projec-

tion team members are needed to assist with

worship. Please contact Robbyn in the church

office for more information or to indicate your

interest in serving.

Summer Sermon Series Rumbling Stomach; Rumbling World,

Redeeming God

I once was told that the act of sitting down to-

gether around a meal is in and of itself an act of

prayer. Something happens when a food is

shared. I’ve realized this more and more the

longer COVID separation continues. I miss gath-

ering around a meal or something as simple as

cookies and coffee.

The biblical story of God and God’s people is

filled with stories of food fellowship, table, and

filling. God doesn’t just provide the Israelites

manna from heaven to feed their bellies. God

provides life, security, hope. Jesus doesn’t just

feed the 5000 with fish and bread to subdue

hunger; Jesus fills them with much more. Jesus

meets us at our kitchen tables and our commu-

nal tables. Jesus comes to us as promised for-

giveness in the bread and wine of commun-

ion. How is food a part pf how our story and

God’s story intersects? What is God up to in

bread and wine and eating and drinking?

In the weeks to come, we will explore the ways

that God meets us in the feeding stories of scrip-

ture in our Summer Sermon Series “Rumbling

Stomach; Rumbling World; Redeeming God”.
