Last week Tom and I were fortunate to travel to the Holy Land for seven days with a group of clergy from our Diocese led by the Rev. David Johnson. David has been taking groups to the Holy Land for twenty years, and this was his last tour group. With a local guide knowledgeable of the land, history and Abrahamic faiths, we were able to experience the power of ancient history in modern times. Perhaps one of the most striking moments was going to the Western Wall (also known as the Wailing Wall) of the Second Temple of Jerusalem, destroyed in 70 A.D. Long the holiest center for the Jewish people, we looked on as men and women washed their hands, took a Hebrew bible from the bookshelves nearby, and walked to the wall (separate from each other) where they read and offered their prayers to God, sometimes gently touching the wall with their hand or foreheads. The women covered their heads and as they left, they did not turn their backs to the wall, but rather walked backwards slowly, perhaps as a gesture of respect, perhaps from a desire to receive the blessing of the wall as long as possible. Tom and I separately knew that we were in the presence of a holy act, one we did not dare disturb by touching the wall ourselves while they were at prayer. That came later when we had a special guided tour into the elaborate chambers beneath the temple, something I did not know existed. There, we could touch the massive blocks of stone, no small miracle that in ancient times a people could hand-chisel and then manually remove and place into a structure that would stand for centuries. Such faith. Such strength. Such perseverance. Their descendants continue to persevere around the world. I was particularly struck by an aging Jewish man dressed in the traditional garb and long black coat, his hair now white in stark contrast. He had been to the wall and was now making his way back, very slowly. He bore a comfort with the ritual that could be seen in his demeanor, and all I could think is that that is what faith looks like. It does not come in grand moments, but in the daily practice, trusting that God is shaping us with each prayer, each act, each moment of dedicated service. Whether we are on a Christian, Jewish or another path, the power of an ancient tradition does not reveal itself without the seeker’s effort. We have to make choices about how we will live. In the Holy Land we often saw scenes of spiritual devotion—the Ethiopian monk beginning mass, the nun at quiet prayer, the Muslim call to prayer—quietly happening as the mass of tourists took selfies with sacred sights. The faithful seemed unbothered by the noise and gawking, maintaining either a powerful concentration or a serenity of spirit born of time and practice. The contrast of activity in the Holy Land is not so very different from our western world half way around the globe. We, too, choose every day whether to walk out of our doors in faith or to be part of the noise around us. Each step in faith—intentional attentiveness to God, private prayer, or corporate worship—forms a well worn path in us, too, over time. Soon, Lent will be upon us as a time to renew spiritual practices that shape us. Ash Wednesday falls on March 6th, and we will have two services, one at noon with Main Street United Methodist Church joining us, and another service at 5:30 p.m. We will make Lenten reflection books available to those who want them, and we will offer a special Choral Lenten Compline service on March 17th. Sunday services will mark the passing of the Forty Days of Lent, and daily services will be offered during Holy Week. The sacrament of the reconciliation of a penitent is available upon appointment with either Alex or myself. Lent is a time when all of us are called to return to the teaching and practices of our faith and to ask God to renew a right spirit within us. If something in you is nudging you to return, come. Come be with your sister and brothers as we walk the way of faith as our spiritual ancestors have for thousands of years. Blessings for a good and holy Lent, Marian+

Lenten Resources The journey through Lent into Easter is a journey with Jesus. We are baptized into his life, self-giving and death; then we rise in hope to life transformed. This Lent, faith communities are invited to walk with Jesus in his Way of Love and into the experience of transformed life. New Way of Love resources for Lent and Easter include three components; additional resources from partnering organizations and churches are also featured: Adult Forum: This set of seven Adult Forums, suitable to diverse settings, ties the Easter Vigil readings to the seven practices of the Way of Love. Drawing on the ancient practice of setting aside Lent as a period of study and preparation for living as a Christian disciple (known as the catechumenate), the forums draw participants to reflect on salvation history, walk toward the empty tomb, and embrace the transforming reality of love, life, and liberation. As we stand with the three women at the empty tomb, we hear his call to go and live that transformed reality. Quiet Day: The Quiet Day curriculum condenses the forums into a single-day journey. Offered as an option for churches and dioceses seeking an alternative to the weekly class. Both Adult Forum and Quiet Day curriculum can be found at Curriculum available at https://www.episcopalchurch.org/lenten-resources-2019. Test Kitchen: “Living the Way of Love, Transformed.” After the forty days of Lent, this Facebook-based platform will invite participants into a fifty-day Eastertide “Test Kitchen.” People everywhere will actively “GO” with Jesus from the tomb to bless the world – and then share and inspire each other with accounts of how they are living the Way of Love. Consider joining this closed Facebook group now to receive regular messages of support as you live the way of love through Lent. Find on Facebook at The Episcopal Church 50 Days of Eastertide Test Kitchen Class. For other Lenten resources see https://www.episcopalchurch.org/lenten-resources-2019. Please let one of the clergy know if you are interested in gathering a group at Trinity for a "Walking the Way of Love" activity.

Event Highlights

Early Service Change Started Sunday, February 10 The 8:00 am Service changed to 8:30 am on February 10, 2019. This change will be for a six month trial period. Wednesday, March 6 Ash Wednesday Services at Noon and 5:30pm Sunday, March 17 at 6:00 pm The Trinity choir will offer a Lenten choral service of Compline, the last of the four services in the Daily Office. This simple, quiet service stems from the prayers said before bed at the end of the monastic round of daily prayer, first begun in the 4th century.  It includes the confession of sin, one or more Psalms, a short scripture reading, versicles and responses, the Lord's Prayer, collects asking for God's protection during the night, and the canticle Nunc dimittis.  Today we live in a world of constant noise- cell phones, television, vehicular traffic-and busyness with work, family school.  This is a wonderful opportunity to lose one's self in quietness, to still your soul for a short while, to feel the presence of God.  From Olivia Hawker's novel,The Ragged Edge of Night,  "Music is a way of transporting emotion from one breast to another.  It is a way of knowing the unknowable, of feeling what we can never allow ourselves to confront in any other way." Tuesdays from March 19 to April 9 Tuesdays at Trinity The annual Tuesdays at Trinity concert/luncheon series begins on Tuesday, March 19 at noon with a 30 minute recital by our former chorister, Rachel Alexander Gibson.  The Merry Marthas will provide a delicious lunch at 12:30 for $10 a plate.  On the following Tuesday, Dr. James Sclater will perform several of his own arrangements of gospel tunes, including "Amazing Grace."  The concert on April 2 will feature the Larry Panella Jazz Trio, and the last program on April 9 will be a string trio recital by Zully Morales Orret et al. If you have never attended one of these concerts/lunches, please try to come to at least one of them.  We have so many friends from the community who come every year but so few from Trinity.  Please support the effort by the Merry Marthas, who work so very hard to provide their wonderful lunches.

Events and Updates Continued Thursday-Sunday, March 28-31 Cursillo # 136 Cursillo is a worldwide movement of the Christian Church which strives to penetrate and Christianize environments through Christian communities in action. It begins with a three-day Cursillo weekend that provides a living experience - meeting Christ, meeting fellow Christians and experiencing how they live. The Cursillo method described during the weekend provides a means to continue the Christian growth after the weekend. The resulting Christian community is a group of men and women who live the Christian life, linked together in Christ, and are supported in their environment. Ask Cathy Hopkins or Ryan Holt for more information or to sign up! Sunday, April 21 Easter Vigil and Baptism Date Weekly email updates We are sending out information once a week in a weekly newsletter email format! Make sure you are subscribed to our emails, go to our website for the link under “Contact Us” or contact the church office! Monday Book Club Join Trinity’s off campus book club, the Happy Bookers, Monday, February 25, as we begin the book Accidental Saints: Finding God in all the wrong people by Nadia Bolz-Weber. Currently we meet at the Brass Hat in Midtown at 6 pm. Always good fellowship and discussions. For more information, contact Susan at [email protected]. Last Wednesday of each month We need more folders for our newsletter! Every month, we have a (very) small team of volunteers who come in the last Wednesday of the month for a couple hours to help fold and prepare it to be mailed! Join us for just 2 hours once a month, and help us keep getting hard copies to everyone in the mail.

With Our SympathyWe extend our sympathy to Jim Sabin and family upon the death of Sharon Sabin. May the souls of the faithful departed rest in peace.

Louis Smith The privilege of being an usher allows special contact with not only other parishioners but also allows us to know better the person we are ushering with.  Since I got involved in this ministry, I have learned a lot about different people, some walk up to the altar with an almost jogging pace. Lewis Smith handles the role professionally and as a gentleman.  He ushers just right. What is your first memory of Trinity? In the Spring of 1999 and a new resident of Hattiesburg, I attended the 10:30 Trinity service with my then ten- year-old daughter, Harriet, from Mobile. We are both

8

Episcopalians and agreed after this service that Trinity was the church for us. In fact, she commented, this church is cool! What makes Trinity special? Its Gothic architecture, dedicated parishioners, location, inspirational music program, and its love for all people. If you have one prayer for Trinity, what would it be? My prayer for Trinity is for it to always continue the outstanding leadership it has always with its Priests, Vestry and wonderful church members' participation in the many Christian groups that we have to support our community. This is fulfilling the Lord’s teachings. What activities have nurtured you spiritually? Ushering has always been a passion for me as it gives me an opportunity to greet parishioners, guests “at the front door” and enables me to give each a friendly smile and hello. What a special way to begin the day. Favorite hymns? Oh my, this is a difficult question because there are so many hymns and we have such a wide selection….”Welcome Happy Morning,” “Silent Night" and “Angels, We have Heard on High.”

Treasured Trinitarian continuedWhat makes Trinity your place to land? Trinity fulfills my Christian needs such as been mentioned in the above questions, and its Christian actions have proven to me that its members and leaders are truly loving and sincere to Christian values. Louis Smith exemplifies that each of us have a gift and it manifests itself when we use it in service to our church and community.
