Identify the significance and social impact of Obama winning the 2009 presidential election

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, YOUR FIRST AFRICAN AMERICAN PRESIDENT…

Barack Obama not only became the first African American president, but beat out a Vietnam war veteran and the wife of a former president

He is said to have gained the presidency by revolutionizing the way a presidential candidate relates to the public.

For the first time in 8 years, Congress was back into a democratic majority.

This election was said to be polarizing, which means people cast their votes for a candidate based on a factor like race or gender

PRESIDENT OBAMA’S DOMESTIC POLICY ACHIEVEMENTS

TAX CUTS: Obama's first major recommendation to Congress was for

an $800-billion economic stimulus package: the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. This was passed through congress by the democratic majority in February 2009

President Obama signed a $858 billion tax cut bill into a law in December 2010HEALTH CARE REFORM:

Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act- ensured all Americans access to affordable, quality health care on March 23,2010

GOVERNMENT SPENDING: Decreased the number of Government employees by 2.6%

-this law was called the "PAY GO" rule. The government only spends what it can afford.

TARGET

Explain the accelerated rate at which the world population is increasing and identify strains this places on the world economy.

ENERGY CRISIS Petroleum demand has increased due to population growth. Because the world population is growing faster than oil

production, production per capita peeked. 2000's almost everyone relied on cars. Oil production and usage skyrocketed. Prices of crude oil went up drastically between 2003 and 2008 World crude oil demand grew 1.76% per year from 1994-2006

and a high of 3.4% from 2003-2004 due to population growth Between 1995 and 2005 consumption of oil grew from 17.7

million barrels to 20.7 million barrels mainly because of the use of cars

Because the population was increasing quickly, more people were using cars, ultimately leading to the crisis

Growing populations reliance on cars is using a lot of renewable resources.

End of Crisis: Beginning of 2008 prices began to fall. Major reduction of barrels of oil produced.
