IT'S ILLEGAL TO UNLOCK YOUR PHONE
Volume 1, Number 1 February 5, 2013
The expiration of exemptions to the Digital Millenium Copyright Act (DMCA) has now made unlocking your phone purchased after January 26th without the permission of your carrier.
"Unlocking" the phone allows it to be used on different carriers depending on the phone's capability.
Punishments can include up to a $2,500 fine in civil suits and $500,000 or 5 years in prison in cases where there is a "commercial advantage" for the party.
Reviews of exemptions to the DMCA will begin in late 2014 with results expected in 2015.

SYMANTEC GETS A BLACK EYE IN CHINESE HACK OF THE NEW YORK TIMES
Volume 1, Number 1 February 5, 2013
The NYT reported on Wednesday that it has being attack by Chinese Hackers for the past four months.
Hackers systematically access to and collected information as the NYT covered a subject perceived sensitive by the Chinese government.
"...little surprise that antivirus programs largely fail to detect the type of custom-built malware the Times‘ hackers used..."
Symantec antivirus only spotted 1 of 45 malware installed in the course of three months.
The others were found in Mandiant’s post-breach investigation months later.

IBM Security Tool can flag ‘Disgruntled Employees’Volume 1, Number 1 February 5, 2013
IBM's new security tool uses Big Data to detect internal and external security threats, including scanning email and social media to identify apparently “disgruntled” employees.
• "designed to crunch decades worth of emails, financial transactions and website traffic, to detect patterns of security threats and fraud." - Joel Schectman WSJ
• analysis and forensic capabilities of real-time data across massive structured data (security alerts, OS logs, DNS transactions and network flows) and unstructured data (emails, social media content, full packet information and business transactions).
• Sentiment analysis: identifies patterns in words and phrases that suggest whether the intent behind a message is likely positive, negative or neutral.
