CHAPTER 9 SUMMARY Changez and the unknown American are at the restaurant
about to eat their food. Changez is telling the story how he returned to Lahore, he
recalls that his house looks different because he is looking at it through a foreigners eyes.
His family throw a banquet dinner and discuss the war between India and Pakistan.
Changez decided to grow a beard in Lahore, when he returned to America was discriminated against
Changez goes to visit Erica, and talked about her being in the institution
CHARACTER DEVELOPMENTS Changez recognises that he has changed, rather than his
country, and he was more like an cold American but gradually understands the different beauty of his family house and homeland.
Erica become more and more lost in her memories of Chris.
FUNDAMENTALISM When Changez was returning from Lahore he was stoped at
the airport, and discriminated against because of his beard. This shows the American stereotypical view on certain type of people after 911.
NOSTALGIA Erica, when she was talking to Changez while it was snowing
at the institution reminded her of when she went to the snow with Chris. These nostalgic memories are having a
negative effect on her current life and others around her.
IDENTITY
When Changez visited his home in Lahore he felt it has changed even though it has not, Changez’s identity has changed making him view his home in a different way. He felt like a foreigner in his own country.
