only to find the colour has faded in less than threeyears. Unfortunately this is exactly the predicament thatRepco Auto Parts found themselves in late last year.Exterior coatings supplied by another company werefading upon exterior exposure resulting in a finish akinto a patchwork quilt.

Repco Auto Parts approached Resene to resolve thefading issue and development began on customisedcolours using the Resene Total Colour System. The newcolour system was designed to deliver maximum durabilityin the exterior environment and facilitate a moremanageable maintenance schedule for repainting.

To accommodate the wide variety of substrates requiringcoating - from timber, corrugated iron and concrete onthe older stores to tilt slab and iron-run Colorsteel onthe newer outlets - the paint system was selected for itsversatility. Corporate colours of Repco Yellow and Blackwere applied in a Resene Hi-Glo acrylic gloss finish formaximum gloss.

While the resulting tinted paint system was moreexpensive than the previous coating, the cost differencewill be quickly recouped with less frequent maintenancerequirements saving Repco Auto Parts both product andlabour costs.

To ensure colour uniformity, Resene produces Repcoproduct in complete batches. All stores draw from thesame stock giving Repco assurance that their nationalbrand identity will be maintained regardless of thelocation of the individual store.

Work is now underway to roll the new colour systemout progressively as required to the nationwide Repcochain of 68 stores. Specifications and tender responsibilitywill be managed by Resene at Repco's request, allowingcustomised specifications to be developed for each site.

wo new Resene products have been utilised to complete the new Alfresco Motor Lodge in Gladstone Road, Gisborne.

The exterior Harditex panels were treated with a unique paintsystem of Resene Quick Dry acrylic primer undercoat followedby Resene Plastercote applied by hopper gun with high air flow, resulting in a 'flattened' coarse grainy finish. The desired texturedeffect was achieved with a single coat application, making this

new product popular with both the owner and the painter. The final colour effect was achieved through the application oftwo coats of Resene Lumbersider satin acrylic tinted to a newcolour - Anderson's Tan.

All interior walls were finished in Resene Zylone SpaceCote lowsheen waterbased enamel to give an attractive, yet extremelydurable, low sheen finish.

he transport industry is not a place for those who wish to stand still. The new Hamilton Transport Building at the corner of Anglesea and Bryce Streets in Hamiltonis no exception to this rule. The smooth tilt slab exterior was coated with ReseneSmooth Surface Sealer adhesion promoter to provide a key for the subsequenttopcoats. This was followed by two coats of Resene Sonyx 101 semi-gloss acrylicand one coat of Uracryl 403 for maximum graffiti protection. This building hasenjoyed extensive positive press in Hamilton due to its innovative appearance andpositive addition to the built environment.

he exterior repaint of The Pot Wa re h o u s e i n H u t t R o a d ,Kaiwharawhara Wellington has causedmany an eye to veer to that side of theroad. The stunning custom mixed exteriorcolour 'Pot Warehouse Tuscany' makes thischaracter building difficult to miss. Visiblefrom both the Motorway and Hutt Road

- the two main routes into and out ofWellington - the new location and exteriorrefurbishment have quickly been rewardedby significantly increased turnover.

The original brick and cementitious plastersubstrates were finished in two coats ofResene Wintergrade Lumbersider coldtemperature curing acrylic and one coatof Resene Paint Effects Medium to achievethe terracotta effect. The paint systemwas topped off with one coat of F.10 glazeto provide protection against trafficemissions and general road grime.

Resene Wintergrade Lumbersider enabledthe painter to stay on-site and continuepainting. If a standard paint had beenspecified, the weather conditions wouldhave forced the cessation of painting andextended the time to completion.

The Paint Effects Medium colourwash wasused to add visual dimension to the paintsystem and is a critical element in the finaleyecatching effect.

new family home in Poplar Lane Hamilton illustrates how distinctive colour and furnishing combinations can give adjacent rooms unique personalities. Criticalto achieving such a perfect finished look is the level of finish of the Gib Board.

A Gib Board Level 5 finish was specified to provide the optimum surface for topcoating. This is especially critical with metallic finishes as the aluminium flakes will tend toaccentuate surface imperfections. A Gib Level 5 finish necessitates a number ofdesign and building elements, including skimcoating of the entire surface with asurfacer, such as Resene Broadwall Surface Prep.

A combination of Zylone Sheen low sheen acrylic, Enamacryl Metallic and Sandtexin hues of Avocado, Hot Chile, Sputnik, Silver Aluminium, Sector and Chino wereused to create the three finished room looks. Distinctive colours and tactile effectsaccessorised with well chosen ornaments, cushions and pictures ensures each roomhas a character of its own.

he recent repaint of the Raglan Town Hall has certainly drawn thelocals out, with many heard to complimentthe Art Deco scheme. As the only art decobuilding in Raglan, it was always destinedto stand out from its neighbours...thebright new colour scheme has made thisa certainty.

on Bakker is literally at the top of the painting profession - it would be difficult to get much higherthan the roof of the Wanganui Ski Club on Mt Ruapehu.

Originally built in 1950, the Wanganui Ski Club is thehighest altitude ski club hut on Mt Ruapehu at a heightof 5900 feet. The roof is exposed to extremely harshweather conditions from frost and sleet to salt, volcanicash and relentless summer sun, playing havoc with thepaint system.

The weathered Colorsteel roof was first washed withResene Roof Wash and Paint Cleaner to clean off allcontamination. Following spot priming with ReseneAlumastic, the roof repaint was completed with twocoats of Resene Hi-Glo Roof Cocoa Brown for maximumprotection against the elements. Before

Building on the success of The Range 2000 and 2001,Resene have released The Range 2002 - a collection of150 classic and contemporary colours designed for theyear 2002. The Range 2002 is based on internationalcolour predictions that Resene have tailored to suit theNew Zealand lifestyle and environment.

The merging of fashion and technology is inspiring newcolour directions and hastening the transition of fashioncolours through industries. Technology has made it easyto communicate colour and colour trends, and maximisethe speed at which new products and colours arelaunched.

The fashion/technology connection is encouraging thereturn to luxurious materials to create an air of elegantsophistication. Materials and colours are blended sothat the texture, pattern and colour are virtuallyindistinguishable from one another. The finish isincreasingly being viewed as a complete entity, ratherthan just pieces of a disparate puzzle.

Like clothing, the concept of monochromatic layeringis becoming popular. Texture is the key driver of thefinished layered look, with colour playing the everimportant supporting role.

The doom and gloom of the Y2k bug is long gone andconsumers are looking to the future with confidence.

This confidence allows for a risk-takingattitude encouraging the use of

brighter, happier, fun colours inthe form of new yellows,

oranges, reds and pinks.

Colours are becominglighter, softer and morecomplex. While blue is still

considered the key colour forthis decade, orange is poised to be the colour weassociate with optimism and happiness in 2002.

Paint films have to put up with an awful lotof abuse during their lifetimes, not the leastof which is attack by mould. On paintedsurfaces, mould looks like dirt and frequentlythe two cannot be visually distinguished.

Mould is a major cause of paintdisfigurement. It destroys the paint's fresh, clean appearance and if left uncheckedshortens the life of the paint film. Most highquality paints contain a fungicide but as itskilling ability is finite mould will eventuallytake over. The only way to remove mouldpermanently is to remove the source ofmoisture and/or provide adequateventilation.

Fungicidal washes such as Resene Moss &Mould Killer are extremely effective at killingmould with the added benefit of bleachingthe moulds clean. However, they have noresidual effect - any ongoing effect must beprovided by the paint itself or furthermaintenance.

Most high quality paints contain fungicideat a level designed to cope with normalexposure. There are some occasions andmicro-climates (such as damp bathrooms)where additional defence may be needed, which is why Resene has launched newResene MoulDefender.

Resene MoulDefender is an acrylic paintcompatible blend of fungicides and algicides, designed to be added at the point of salewhen a particular need for extra protectionagainst mould is identified.

Resene MoulDefender will not necessarilyprevent all future mould growth as this isimpossible, particularly in very damp areas. However, the addit ion of ReseneMoulDefender will significantly slow downthe growth of new mould, minimisingmaintenance requirements. Improvedventilation methods, such as extractor fansin bathrooms, will also act to slow down thegrowth of new mould.

Resene MoulDefender is available fromselected Resene ColorShops nationwide.

Resene AquaShield is a high mineral content super-hydrophobic, water repellant coating for application on mostporous building materials to impart watershedding properties.

Available in a range of white and light earth colours, ReseneAquaShield dries to an attractive mineral flat finish. Colourswill lighten with exposure resulting in a natural weatheredappearance.

Resene AquaShield combines the water-repellant propertiesof silicones with a special outer micro-structure considerablyreducing the contact area for water and dirt. The result: dirtparticles adhere only loosely and are more easily carried awayby raindrops, leaving a dry and attractive façade. Ideal forhighly stressed weather exposed façades.

Porous substrates should be pre-treated with Resene Aquapelto maximise water repellency and breathability properties.

Maximum water and dirt resistance will be achieved whenthe coating has fully cured. Full cure takes approximately 1month but will be accelerated by weathering and elevatedtemperatures.

Resene AquaShield offers a desirable combination ofwaterproofing and breathability properties not currentlyavailable in other finishes.

For further technical information on Resene AquaShield seeData Sheet D601 or call your Resene representative to viewa sample.
