THE INTROIT “God Is On Our Side” (Crouch)
We live in troubled times
Seems like the sun won't shine When will we realize God is on our side He hides us in his arms Protecting us from harm It's good to realize God is on our side Nothing can separate He gives us strength to take All that this world may bring God is on our side God is on our side God is on our side
CALL TO WORSHIP Pastor Don Darius Butler
When the earth changes and the mountains shake – tempting our hearts to fear When rivers overflow their banks – too far away to quench the wildfires, we remember God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. When the nations are in uproar and kingdoms totter When desolations are brought on the earth and it melts, we remember God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. When wars persist to the ends of the earth When the bow is unbroken and the spear and shield are held in place, we remember God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. When we need to be still and know that He is God When we need to see Him exalted among the nations and in the earth, we remember God, you alone are our refuge; you alone are our strength. We look to you in these troubling times.
THE HYMN OF WITNESS “Through All the Changing Scenes of Life”(Smart)
Through all the changing scenes of life, In trouble and in joy, The praises of my God shall still My heart and tongue employ. Of His deliv'rance I will boast, Till all that are distressed From my example comfort take, And charm their griefs to rest.
FMBC AT WORSHIP 8:30 AM
Oh, magnify the Lord with me; With me exalt His name; When in distress to Him I called, He to my rescue came. The hosts of God encamp around The dwellings of the just; Deliv'rance He affords to all Who on His succor trust. Fear Him, ye saints, and you will then Have nothing else to fear; Make you His service your delight, Your wants shall be His care.
PRAYER OF ADORATION The Reverend Stan Torain
SUNG RESPONSE “Never Alone” (Patterson)
I’ve seen the lightning flashing, And heard the thunder roll, I’ve felt sin’s breakers dashing, Trying to conquer my soul; I’ve heard the voice of my Savior, Telling me still to fight on, He promised never to leave me, Never to leave me alone. [Refrain]
No, never alone, No, never alone; He promised never to leave me, Never to leave me alone. No, never alone, No, never alone; He promised never to leave me, Never to leave me alone. The world’s fierce winds are blowing, Temptation’s sharp and keen, I have a peace in knowing My Savior stands between— He stands to shield me from danger, When earthly friends are gone, He promised never to leave me, Never to leave me alone. When in affliction’s valley I’m treading the road of care, My Savior helps me to carry My cross when heavy to bear, Though all around me is darkness, Earthly joys all flown; My Savior whispers His promise, “I never will leave thee alone.”
He died for me on the mountain, For me they pierced His side, For me He opened the fountain, The crimson, cleansing tide; For me He’s waiting in glory, Seated upon His throne, He promised never to leave me, Never to leave me alone.
WELCOME GREETING & WORSHIP THROUGH GIVING
READING OF SCRIPTURE: ISAIAH 36 Minister Bridgette Bradley-Brown
1 In the fourteenth year of King Hezekiah, King Sennacherib of Assyria came up against all the fortified cities
of Judah and captured them. 2 The king of Assyria sent the Rabshakeh from Lachish to King Hezekiah at
Jerusalem, with a great army. He stood by the conduit of the upper pool on the highway to the Fuller’s Field. 3 And there came out to him Eliakim son of Hilkiah, who was in charge of the palace, and Shebna the secretary,
and Joah son of Asaph, the recorder.
4 The Rabshakeh said to them, “Say to Hezekiah: Thus says the great king, the king of Assyria: On what do
you base this confidence of yours? 5 Do you think that mere words are strategy and power for war? On whom
do you now rely, that you have rebelled against me? 6 See, you are relying on Egypt, that broken reed of a
staff, which will pierce the hand of anyone who leans on it. Such is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all who rely on
him. 7 But if you say to me, ‘We rely on the Lord our God,’ is it not he whose high places and altars Hezekiah
has removed, saying to Judah and to Jerusalem, ‘You shall worship before this altar’? 8 Come now, make a
wager with my master the king of Assyria: I will give you two thousand horses, if you are able on your part
to set riders on them. 9 How then can you repulse a single captain among the least of my master’s servants,
when you rely on Egypt for chariots and for horsemen? 10 Moreover, is it without the Lord that I have come
up against this land to destroy it? The Lord said to me, Go up against this land, and destroy it.”
11 Then Eliakim, Shebna, and Joah said to the Rabshakeh, “Please speak to your servants in Aramaic, for we
understand it; do not speak to us in the language of Judah within the hearing of the people who are on the
wall.” 12 But the Rabshakeh said, “Has my master sent me to speak these words to your master and to you,
and not to the people sitting on the wall, who are doomed with you to eat their own dung and drink their
own urine?”
13 Then the Rabshakeh stood and called out in a loud voice in the language of Judah, “Hear the words of the
great king, the king of Assyria! 14 Thus says the king: ‘Do not let Hezekiah deceive you, for he will not be able
to deliver you. 15 Do not let Hezekiah make you rely on the Lord by saying, The Lord will surely deliver us;
this city will not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.’ 16 Do not listen to Hezekiah; for thus says the
king of Assyria: ‘Make your peace with me and come out to me; then every one of you will eat from your own
vine and your own fig tree and drink water from your own cistern, 17 until I come and take you away to a
land like your own land, a land of grain and wine, a land of bread and vineyards. 18 Do not let Hezekiah
mislead you by saying, The Lord will save us. Has any of the gods of the nations saved their land out of the
hand of the king of Assyria? 19 Where are the gods of Hamath and Arpad? Where are the gods of Sepharvaim?
Have they delivered Samaria out of my hand? 20 Who among all the gods of these countries have saved their
countries out of my hand, that the Lord should save Jerusalem out of my hand?’”
21 But they were silent and answered him not a word, for the king’s command was, “Do not answer him.” 22
Then Eliakim son of Hilkiah, who was in charge of the palace, and Shebna the secretary, and Joah son of
Asaph, the recorder, came to Hezekiah with their clothes torn, and told him the words of the Rabshakeh.
