Bax 1444 — Oklahoma City, Oklahoma ------------- — AIR TERMINAL BUILDING — WILL ROGERS FIELD ----------------------------OCTOBER, 1961 IT'S NEVERTOO L President's Column We dedicate this issue of the News Letter to our Headquarters group, Elizabeth Sewell, Chairman, Mary Lester, News Letter Editor, Rita Eaves, and Carol Craig, Headquarters Secretary. I arrived in Oklahoma City September 18 from High Point, N. C., some 1068 miles, six hours, 30 min- utes via Atlanta around weather, fly- ing alone in that red and white Bo- nanza. Deedo, bless her, met me at at Headquarters with a very large package of past minutes, files, and— '“stuff,” Deedo’s favorite by-word. I had thought I knew just what went on at Headquarters. Now, I find I really had no conception. Approximately half the membership was renewed and processed prior to the first of Sept., thirty days ahead of the deadline. We greatly appreciate the early and prompt renewals. Next month the work on the 1961-62 Roster begins. Imagine proof-reading every name, address and telephone number. And the News Letter must meet a deadline every month. Hats off to Headquar- ters! Wish all of you could visit Head- quarters, see the Amelia Earhart mementos and the lovely Korean scroll presented by Kyung O. Kim. The library now contains several books authored by 99’s. “A Sky of My Own,” Molly Bernheim; ‘‘Wings for Life,” Ruth Nichols; and ‘‘Sabres Over Brandywine,” Lindy Boyes. It would be nice to add to our library. Has anyone a copy of ‘‘High, Wide and Frightened” by Louise Thaden to con- tr i bute ? Today, September 20, as I write the weather is IFR in Oklahoma City, but clearing. Hope to wing my way east tomorrow and attend a joint meeting of the Alabama and Georgia Chap- ters. Keep flying, Louise Smith President HEADQUARTERS COMMITTEE—Elizabeth V. Sewell, chairman; Mary Eester, News Letter Editor; Rita Eaves. Attention A!! Governors! Please Read Carefully May v/e call to your notice that the time is here for you to appoint your SECTION SCHOLARSHIP C H A I R - MAN, to whom all Chapters in your Section will be sending in their Amelia Earhart Memorial Scholarship appli- cations in the next two months or so. When you have made your appoint- ment, will you please advise the Chairman of each Chapter in your Section the name and address of the girl whom you have appointed, so that they will have no difficulty in properly dispatching their applications when the time comes. You will find h ere w hat w as asked for, m y flying s to ry . I w ro te it in F re n ch a long tim e ago, but it has tak en m e even m ore tim e and h a rd w ork to tra n s la te 1 it in E n g lish !

I took m y f irs t flying lessons a t E lisab e th v ille (ex-B elg ian Congo), in 1947 in a P ip e r Cub, on m y uncle’s suggestion . A fterw ards, I continued m y tra in in g in B elgium in an A uster- A rrow and obta ined by P r iv a te P ilot license in 1948. At th a t tim e m y uncle prom ised m e an a irc ra f t if I su cceed ed in ob ta in ing a C om m ercia l P ilot L icense. It is use less to d escribe the h e a r t w ith w hich I stud ied and t r a in ed.

D uring th a t tra in in g tim e I flew P ip e r Cubs, A uster-A rrow s, F a irch ild s and for a ro b a tics , T ig e r M oths.

In 1949 I ob ta ined m y C om m ercia l P ilo t L icense and like it w as p ro m ised, I received a p lane; m y Stinson V oyager in w hich I still fly and it is a lw ays a v e ry good m ach ine .

W ith m y S tinson I began to m ake "T ax i f lig h t” during th e su m m er, and som e p leasu re tr ip s during the w in ter season . F or these la st fligh ts m y fa th e r used to be m y p assen g e r and th e longest tr ip s n e v e r frigh tened him . At m ore th a n seven ty he ad a p te d h im self qu ite w ell to long spo rt flight.

We s ta r te d w ith a tr ip all around M e d ite rra n n e a : Spain, B a le a res I s lands, M orocco, A lgeria , Tunis, E gypt, Lebanon, T urkey , C yprus, R hodes, C rete, G reece, C orsica, S ard in ia and Italy .

In 1951 we flew from B russe ls to Capetow n th rough S a h a ra —th a t w as a bit d ifficu lt because of the sh o rt ran g e of the S tinson (less th a n 1,000 km .) and lack of rad io aids. On our w ay we paid a v isit to m y uncle in Belgian-

Congo, and on the w ay b ack we visited th e C a n a ry Islands.

In 1952 w e v isited Ind ia com pletely, Cylon included. In 1953 w e flew to M alaya and Indonesia, as fa r as Bali Island .

In 1954, m y uncle and m y fa th e r g av e m e m y B onanza, the S tinson b ecom ing a sp a re p lane th a t I use p rin cipally for the photo by a ir ; dropping and landing on very sho rt or bad a i r fields.

In 1955 we flew all around A fr ic a : E gypt, Sudan, E th iopa , K enya, Zanzi. bar, D iam ond C oast, L iberia , etc.

T hese la s t y ea rs , hav ing had the g re a t so rrow of losing m y fa th e r, I kep t flying ev e ry w in te r to B elgian Congo to spend a few w eeks w ith m y uncle. D uring the sum m er, of course, I go on w ith m y tax i-flights.

Ju s t now I have 2,700 hours flying in about 10 d iffe ren t a irc ra f t having landed on 320 d iffe ren t ae rod rom es of abou t 50 d iffe ren t countries.

On Ju ly 8th the fo rm al m eetings w ere ended in San Diego. On, the 9th, the tran s-co n tin en ta l a ir ra c e am ong the m em b ers of the 99's began as an im p o rtan t fe a tu re of the annua l convention. Two hundred and fourteen m em b ers en tered the S an Diego to A tlan tic City race . The youngest conte s ta n t w as 20 y ea rs of age, and the o ldest 71. A m ong these a re m any w ith reco rd s of over 5,000 fly ing hours, fou rteen of them w ith m ore th an 10,000 hours.

In our country , the field of ac tiv ity for w om en h as been thus f a r m uch re s tr ic te d and secluded. In A m erica, it is com m on to see w om en pilo ts g iv ing flying lessons to m en. One of the p a rtic ip a n ts in th is y e a r ’s 99’s rac e w a s M iss G rac ia S arto ri who r e p re sen ted Ita ly . She has 850 hours of solo reco rd , and h as v isited m a n y countrie s in N orth , C en tra l and South A m erica. She and I p rom ised to v isit each o th e r’s countries in th e fu tu re . She is a n a tiv e of Rome.

The oldest co n testan t th is y e a r w as M rs. N ina Stokes who is 71. She h as been a te a c h e r in C alifornia, and h er husband , who also flies, is a law yer. We also had a m o th er and d au g h te r te am in the a ir ra c e th is y ear. M rs. N ancy D iam ond, the m other, h as 935 hours of solo flying.

This flying contest am ong w om en from m any p a r ts of the w orld h as not only aroused the in te res t of the citizens of A tlan tic C itv w ith th ° roa^s of th e ir a irp lan e engines, bu t it a 1 so aroused the c ity ’s exc item en t w ith th e ir exhibition of skill and d arin g in the sky.

As a K orean, I am nrmm m rep o rt th a t in the In te rn a tio n a l 99’s A ir R ace of 19P9. i shall have the p leasu re to p a rtic in a te .
