MARCH 29 — 55

Thursday of The Lord’s supper (hoLy Thursday)aT The evening Mass

— March 29, 2018 —At the Last Supper, on the night when he was betrayed, our Savior instituted the Eucharistic Sacrifice of his body and blood. The tabernacle should be entirely empty; a sufficient amount of bread should be consecrated at this Mass for the Communion of clergy and laity today and tomorrow. Mass begins with the Entrance Antiphon (below) or an appropriate song.

EntrancE antiphon cf. Galatians 6:14

We should glory in the Cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, in whom is our salvation, life and resurrection, through whom we are saved and delivered.

Continue with The Order of Mass—The Introductory Rites on page 3. During the singing of the “Gloria” (page 6), bells are rung and then remain silent until the Easter Vigil. Likewise, during this same period, the organ and other musical instruments may be used only so as to support the singing.

The LiTurgy of The Word

First rEading Exodus 12:1–8, 11–14 (39ABC)

The Lord instructed Moses and Aaron regarding the Passover meal. They were to eat roasted lamb, unleavened bread and bitter herbs, and to sprinkle blood of the lamb on the doorpost as a sign that those inside obeyed God’s command.

Jesus called his disciples together for the Passover Supper. During the meal, Jesus rose, tied a towel around himself, and washed the disciples’ feet. He said, “If I, therefore, the master and teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash one another’s feet.”

Friday oF the Passion oF the Lord (Good Friday)— March 30, 2018 —

According to the Church’s ancient tradition, Mass is not celebrated today. The celebration of the Lord’s Passion consists of three parts: the Liturgy of the Word, the Adoration of the Cross, and Holy Communion.

First Part: the Liturgy oF the Word

First reading Isaiah 52:13—53:12 (40ABC)

Isaiah foretold the Messiah’s sufferings by describing those of the servant who died and was raised up to take away the sins of many.

the Passion oF the Lord* John 18:1—19:42

The Passion according to St. John is proclaimed by the Deacon, or if there is no Deacon, by the Priest. It may also be read by lay readers, with the part of Christ reserved to the Priest, if possible. Speakers in the Passion Narrative are represented by these abbreviations:

N. – Narrator † – Christ

V. – VoiceC. – Crowd

N. The Passion of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John

Jesus went out with his disciples across the Kidron valley to where there was a garden, into which he and his disciples entered. Judas his betrayer also knew the place, because Jesus had often met there with his

disci ples. So Judas got a band of soldiers and guards from the chief priests and the Pharisees and went there with lanterns, torches, and weapons. Jesus, knowing everything that was going to happen to him, went out and said to them,

† “Whom are you looking for?”

*Note: A chanted musical version of the St. John Passion is available (edition 20042).

RCIA / THE WAY OF THE CROSS — 137

The ScruTinieS (Third, Fourth and Fifth Sundays of Lent)I. INVITATION TO SILENT PRAYER

Following the Liturgy of the Word and homily, the elect come forward with their godparents. The cel-ebrant invites the assembly to pray in silence and to ask that the elect be given a spirit of repentance, a sense of sin, and the true freedom of children of God.

He then invites the elect to also pray in silence, suggesting that as a sign of their inner spirit of repen-tance they bow their heads or kneel.

II. INTERCESSIONS FOR THE ELECTAfter the period of silent prayer, the community and the elect stand for the intercessions. During the intercessions, the godparents stand with their right hand on the shoulder of the elect.

III. EXORCISMThe ceremony continues with the prayer of exorcism in which the celebrant asks that the elect be freed from the effects of sin and from the power of Satan. With this prayer the elect receive new strength in the midst of their spiritual journey and open their hearts to receive the gifts of the Savior.

Following the exorcism, all join in singing an appropriate song.

IV. DISMISSAL OF THE ELECTThe elect are normally dismissed at this point, and the rite continues with the Liturgy of the Eucharist. If the Eucharist is not celebrated, the faithful and the elect are dismissed together, and an appropriate song may conclude the celebration.

The Way of The croSSTradition holds that Jesus walked from Pilate’s praetorium to Golgotha (the Place of the Skull). The de-votion known as “the way,” or Stations of the Cross (Via Crucis), originated with pilgrims who walked the Via Dolorosa (the “way of tears”) in Jerusalem. In 2001, the Congregation for the Discipline of the Sacraments issued the Directory on Popular Piety and the Liturgy (DPPL) and, when referring to this devotion, stated that “In the Via Crucis, various strands of Christian piety coalesce: the idea of life as being a journey or pilgrimage; as a passage from earthly exile to our true home in Heaven; the deep desire to be conformed to the Passion of Christ; which imply that his disciples must follow behind their Master, daily carrying their own crosses (cf. Luke 9, 23)” (DPPL 133). For music, see #119.

I trust in you, Lord, my soul looks to youas watchmen wait for the dawn. And more than the watchmenwait for the dawn, let Israel wait for the Lord.

For with you is found forgiveness of sin;you show your mercy to all.And you will deliver your chosen ones;deliver your people, O God.

Out of the depths, I cry to you, O Lord.
