The General Instruction of the Roman Missal makes it clear that the chasuble, as well as all the vestments used at Mass “should con-tribute to the beauty of the sacred action” (#335) and be marked by “beauty and nobility” (#334). The 2004 instruction, Redemptionis Sacramentum (“The Sacrament of Redemption”) insists that this noble and beautiful vesture is indispensable to the celebration of the Sacred Liturgy. Further writings of the bishops in this country speak of the appropriateness of what is used in the celebration of the Sacred Mysteries: this appropriateness is “demonstrated by the work’s ability to bear the weight of mystery, awe, reverence and won-der that the liturgical action expresses” (Built of Living Stones, #148). The section continues: “Art that is used in worship therefore must evoke wonder at its beauty but lead beyond itself to the invisible God” All artistic creations, and in fact everything used in the Liturgy of the Church, vestments included, must function in the service of won-der and mystery. Chasubles, dalmatics, all vesture worn by those who assist at the altar can be a gateway to awe, reverence and prayer…or not.
To that end, beginning on the First Sunday of Advent, St. Peter Parish will begin using black cassocks and white surplices as the nor-mal vesture for all altar servers. Although in some places it is common for albs or white cassocks to be worn by altar servers, most often that vesture is not able to fulfill it’s intended function of covering one’s “street clothes” - particularly those of vibrant, fluorescent colors. The visible sign of the white baptismal garment common to all those baptized into Christ is maintained in this vesture with the use of the white surplice. The Holy Mass is not the place for what is sometimes called “genteel sufficiency” - just what is “good enough”. The Sacred Liturgy demands something more of us - it deserves an ample portion of beauty and nobility - because through the faithful celebration of the Liturgy, Christ Jesus reveals Himself in Word and Sacrament.
I would be remiss if I did not extend sincere thanks to the parishioners and parish groups who have provided the means for the cas-socks to be purchased. Preparing to enter into a new year of grace, may the Lord’s saints and angels protect and preserve us from the unholy spirit of stinginess. With beauty and nobility, in truth and in faith, to Christ Jesus alone be the glory!
Yours in Christ – Fr. Secrist

OPEN TO THE PUBLIC
Advent Vespers 6:00 pm every Sunday of Advent
December 1, 8, 15 and 22
As we enter into the Season of Advent and prepare to cele-brate the Incarnation of our Savior, please plan to gather in prayer, song and praise at Sunday Vespers. Vespers, also known as Evening Prayer, is part of the Liturgy of the Hours. Though not usually prayed publicly, expect for in mon-asteries and seminaries, the Liturgy of the Hours is the Church’s official prayer marking the hours of each day and sanctifying the day with prayer. In fact, all those who are Or-dained to Holy Orders make a promise to pray for the People of God through the Liturgy of the Orders. One goal, yet unful-filled, of the liturgical revisions of the Second Vatican Council was to return the Hours to their rightful place as a public cele-bration. “Pastors of souls should see to it that the chief hours, especially Vespers, are celebrated in common in church on Sundays and the more solemn feasts.” At the heart of these prayers are the Psalms. To pray the Psalms is to pray as Christ Jesus Himself had. In addition to the Psalms, antiphons, New Testament canticles and hymns are also part of the Liturgy of the Hours. The Liturgy of the Hours, together with the celebration of the Sacraments, con-stitute the official public prayer life of the Church. Each Sunday evening of Advent, Vespers will be led by dea-cons of our parish, supported by local musicians and parish-ioners of St. Peter Parish. Please plan on joining us each week for prayer and reflection through Sacred Scripture and music.
Advent Vespers 6:00 pm every Sunday of Advent
December 1, 8, 15 and 22
First Sunday of Advent December 1, 2019
Our parish will be adopting 40 families from the Samaritan Center this year. We hope you can help to make a joyous Christmas for these families. We will be providing a food basket for each family, one new gift for each family member over 18 years old, and a new toy and clothing gift for children under 18 years old. School students will be donating one food item to help in preparation of the food baskets for the families.
There will be TWO TREES this year set up on November 23 (weekend before Thanksgiving). One tree will be in the VESTIBULE in the BACK OF CHURCH and the second tree will be in the RAMP ENTRANCE to church. There will be many ornaments hanging on the trees that represent a gift request for each family member. We ask that you spend a minimum of $25 on a new gift for each ornament (no used items please). The items listed
on each ornament are an idea or wish list item from each family member. Some ornaments have a monetary donation listed that will be used to purchase food for each family. This money can be put in the box under the trees.
Please keep each ornament and place it on the outside your wrapped gift. The ornament is necessary to ensure anonymity for our families and to help each family know who gets each gift. Each ornament is labeled with a family AND member number. For example, Family 11 - 3C would be the “clothing” gift for Family 11 and Member 3, and Family 20 – 4T would be the “toy” gift for Family 20 and Member 4.
Parishioners are also asked to save large cardboard boxes, as these will be needed to organize the food and gifts for each family. Please, also consider donating your Christmas cards this year to the parish because they are used to make ornaments for the trees each year.
Thank you for your help. If you have any questions, please call or email the Giving Tree Coordinators, Codi Lauf or Jamie Strope.

Giving Tree
End of Year Giving Many thanks to our parishioners for sharing their treasure with our parish throughout this year.
If you are planning to make an end-of-year donation, it must be received IN THE PARISH OFFICE by 12:00 pm on Tuesday, December 31 to be included on your 2019 giving statement. No donations received after that time can be counted toward the 2019 tax year, regardless of the date on the check.
The Parish Office will be open Tuesday, December 31 until 12:00noon only, and will be closed Wednesday, January 1.
Giving statements for 2019 will be provided to those who re-quest them by email. If you have already submitted your name for emailed statements, you do not need to do this again. If you have not, and you would like a statement produced for you, please email [email protected]. After you have sub-mitted your request and after all donations for 2019 have been posted, your statement will be emailed to you.
If you do not have email, please call the Parish Office after Jan-uary 20. Your statement will be printed and waiting to be picked up during business hours: Monday – Friday, 8:00 am – 4:30 pm.
Thank you!
Alice Kuehn’s Nurse Notes
Here comes Advent!
Preparing for Christmas - Advent is the time for us to “ponder anew what the Almighty can do...” Let us also ponder what we can do to prepare for His coming. Advent is a wonderful time to pause amidst the busy-ness of our daily life and to be more at-tentive to our spiritual, mental and physical health. The Advent and Christmas Seasons get filled up with a lot of stuff - so take a look at your busy schedule and see if you can plan less and relax, pray and meditate more. Maybe you could read some of Luke’s gospel readings of the Nativity every day. Consider par-ticipating in some of the Advent liturgies and activities as a spe-cific way to prepare for His coming. Make healthy recreation a part of your preparation but take some time to reflect on what entertainment activities you will enjoy during Advent and Christmas.
As you begin to prepare spiritually for Christmas, remember also to pray for those who are so much in need of food, clothing and shelter around the world - those hard hit this year from fires, hurricanes, tornados and floods, for those living in the war-torn Middle East, migrants and immigrants fleeing from war, hostility, and persecution, as well as those in our own community who are alone and/or in need of comfort and assistance. In addition, not only pray, but also reach out to help, perhaps by helping with the Samaritan Giving Tree or some other Christmas “service project.”
Our volunteer Caring Neighbors work with me to bring greetings from the parish, bring weekly bulletins, assist the priests and deacons with ensuring spiritual needs are addressed (Masses in the nursing homes, weekly communion services, communion to the homebound), and simply sitting visiting with and praying with those they visit, as well as seeing if there are unmeet needs that the parish nurse should check on. Our parish is blessed with so many kind volunteers who give much of their time to this minis-try. Please remember to pray for those who serve, and for all parishioners hospitalized, homebound or in residential care. If you would like to help with visiting homebound – we especially need more volunteers to visit the nursing homes - or would like to assist in other ways, please call Alice at the parish office. You may contact me at 636-8159x369 or via email [email protected].

Mrs. Dampf’s second grade class recently made outstanding Habitat Dioramas after learning about different types of Habi-tats in Science. In Reading/Language Arts we have been find-ing the main idea and supporting details from informative text, and students are writing informative paragraphs about their Habitats. We will then edit and type our paragraphs in the Computer Lab. The students are very proud of their hard work!
Scrip - This may sound early, but the holiday season will soon be upon us. The last week to order Scrip before the Thanksgiving holiday and Black Friday Shopping will be Monday, November 18. The last week to order Scrip before the Christmas holiday will be Monday, December 16.
Generic Scrip will be available for teacher and staff gifts. Just send a note and separate check from your scrip order indicating the dollar amount that you wish the certificate to be and how many you need. I will return them to you for your children to give out. The teacher or staff member will then come to me and pick out the gift card of their choice for the amount they were given. This has been very popular in the past. The last day to order these is also December 16.
You are invited to the Chapel of Perpetual Eucharistic Adora-tion. Whether it be a short visit, an hour with Jesus or commit-ting to a specific hour weekly of your choice. Praying, reading, meditating, or just sitting with the Lord in his presence is a great opportunity for us all. We are all called to be saints, don’t miss the opportunity.
