then declarer can claim 12 tricks. If East ducks, the ♦K should be followed by another club to the queen. Now play the ♥K followed by the jack discarding the two diamonds. the ♥J loses to the queen, but declarer now has 12 tricks - 5 clubs, the ♦K, ♠A K, ♥K 10 and two spade ruffs.here is another redoubled hand from the same event.

When my partner chose to bid 5C over my double of 4S, I didn’t expect any high card points from him but a somewhat distributional hand with at least 5 clubs. With the void in spades, solid looking hearts and a diamond control, I could count 11 tricks even if partner had a Yarborough. So I redoubled. Even with the aJx of trumps sitting

As North I opened 1H. The overcall of 1S by East was passed around to me. this required an automatic reopening double from me. However I didn’t like the idea of partner converting this into penalties with a load of spades. My hand was distributional and didn’t have defensive values, so I decided to bid 2C. Partner now forced the issue with 2S before leaping to 6C. East was on lead and doubled with two aces. this is not unreasonable since the aces didn’t include the ♠A. the redouble by partner sent my BP soaring until dummy went down.East led the ♦a and switched to the ♠Q. I had 5 club winners in dummy, 2 diamond winners (K-Q) and the ♠A K giving 9 tricks. So I needed 3 spade ruffs in hand to be absolutely safe. I ruffed the spade in hand and returned to dummy with a club. a second spade from dummy was ruffed in hand and then I played a heart to enter dummy with a ruff. When the ♥a popped up I could claim 12 tricks. Even if the ace did not appear, I could ruff a third spade with my last club and claim the contract. One of my good friends confessed that he went down in the same contract after the ♥a lead, and was curious as to how the contract can be made double dummy. the variation here is that declarer can make only one diamond trick as compared to two in my case where the ♦a is led. After ruffing the ♥a, play a low club to the king and then a diamond towards the king. If East goes up with the ace

over the KQxx, the surprised declarer with zero points had no difficulty rattling off 11 tricks. The ♦K was led which was won in dummy. the ace and king of hearts followed discarding a diamond. a diamond was then ruffed followed by a trump to the king and ace. East played a spade that was ruffed in dummy followed by the ♥Q for a spade discard. the 4th heart was ruffed followed by a spade ruff ending in dummy. The ♣Q was played and the last heart enabled the 4th spade in hand to be discarded. Declarer now conceded the ♣J and claimed the contract. For the statistically oriented minds out there, the Yarborough is a hand with no card higher than a nine spot. the term is derived from Lord Yarborough of England, who offered a wager with odds of 1,000 pounds to one against the chance of any player having such a holding. the actual chance of any player holding a hand with no card higher than a nine has been calculated as 1,827 to 1. I wonder what the odds are for a Yarborough hand to declare and make a redoubled game contract. Roman Morawiecki may well have made his way into history books! On both these deals the redoubles earned us only an extra IMP or two. So why risk a redouble for such a small gain? Perhaps it’s to reassure partner, ‘Not to worry, I know what I am doing’, or to send a message to opponents, ‘Don’t you dare!’ ■

Responding 1NT

thIS is such a common beginning to a bidding sequence, partner

opens one-of-a-suit and we reply 1NT, yet few have really thought it through. this article examines the problem.Consider this hand after partner opens 1D or 1H.

♠A875 ♥7 ♦4 ♣KJ97654

Many players would consider a reply of 1S automatic yet this bid has the effect of “burying” the real feature of the hand, the magnificent seven-card club suit. You will never be able to introduce that suit into the auction without implying longer spades. the club suit is effectively dead and buried. Respond 1NT, however and you can freely bid this suit, if you want to, at your next turn without any calamitous consequences. You can respond 1S to 1C as later club preference does not imply long spades. It is possible, of course, to have an agreement that to rebid in a minor after first responding in a major, shows a longer suit. this approach creates a whole new set of problems. When are we in “natural” mode and when are we not? the simple and effective solution is to play, always, in the natural mode. to bid one suit then another always shows greater or equal length in the first. If you play “Check-back” or “New-minor forcing,” you simply cannot show your major and then your minor. Unless you bid your minor immediately it is lost forever. these conventions are based on the assumption that minor suit part-scores, or even game contracts for that matter, have no place in the game. this is a false assumption.By playing 2Nt as always forcing, we do not sacrifice a natural bid. Bids in No- trump are never “natural”. Bids in a minor now become natural and descriptive while 2Nt allows us to

extract the distributional information we need, when we need it.When do we show a four-card major ahead of a five-card or longer minor? Only when we want to leave the minor out of the bidding altogether. to my mind that is never, although it is always a matter for personal judgment. Bidding to the best part-score is always rewarded, particularly at pairs where you can often score just as well finding a nice minor suit spot as bidding a grand slam. Do not accept, uncritically, the popular baloney that all part-scores must be played in No-trumps.this is the suggested approach.“as responder, show a four-card suit at the one-level only when there is no longer suit in the hand, except possibly in the suit which partner has opened. Bid four-card suits up-the-line regardless of their rank.”It follows from this proposition that we respond 1NT to 1D, or 1H when we hold a 4-5+ shape in a major and a lower ranking minor and the hand strength lies in the range 5-11. Since a 1NT response does not deny the holding of four cards in a major, opener makes due allowance when choosing whether or what to rebid. If opener chooses to “reverse” into a higher ranking suit, his bid is, as always, strong and forcing but simple preference to his first suit or the introduction of a new suit by responder can be passed out. With what are now game-going values, responder can bid 2Nt to announce the fact and allow opener to describe his hand further. a raise of opener’s second suit is conveniently treated as forcing.

6S5 7S1 Forcing2 First round control. An ace, not a

void. In an auction like this opener knows that partner has a lot of minor-suit cards. Slams played in 4-4 fits need a source of tricks and a void will not assist in providing them. the ace of clubs brings this particular hand to life. It is not often that you see a 1NT responder us-ing Blackwood!

3 RKCB4 1 or 45 4 with the ♠Q and no side king. Pity,

we can’t show that ♥J!The key to this grand slam, which requires little more than a 3-2 spade break, is the club fit. Had East responded 1S, instead of 1NT, few partnerships would have the mechanism to go even beyond 4S.

East has an easy nine tricks in clubs with no other part-score any hope and a reasonable expectation of an 80%+ board.

1 this is one of the very few, virtually universal conventions in bridge. the single raise of a strong 2h or 2S shows values. to be more specific, the raise to four shows no ace or king, no singleton or void. East barely had his bid but he did have it. any other bid would be very costly.

2 this is another one. Even if the part-nership religiously bids first round controls first, a weak responder to 2C is permitted (required?) to show first or second round controls indiscriminately once cue-bidding has begun. Blackwood is still there as a back-up.

3 East may have been having con-niptions at this point, but he should not have worried.

From declarer’s point of view dummy was a bit of a disappointment. he had envisaged drawing trumps, unblocking the ace and queen of diamonds and entering dummy with East’s third trump to pitch a club on the diamond king. No such luck. But how would you play the hand after a diamond lead? Most players would automatically do right. The poor defenders know abso-

lutely nothing about declarer’s hand so after making sure to win the diamond in hand with the ace, run all those trumps. Pitch three clubs, and finally the SJ, unblocking(!), from dummy. In reality, of course, it is the club suit which you cannot afford to block if you do decide to finesse. What to discard from dummy, for deceptive purposes,

K4 a875Q965 7A832 4A83 KJ97654W E1C1 1S1NT 3C2

3NT1 Open 1C, not 1D when the hand

is balanced.2 This bid does not seek spade

support, 2Nt does, nor is it forc-ing. It unequivocally shows long clubs. West has an automatic 3NT which has ten tops, no defence and a combined 21 count. If West instead opens 1D, to bid game would require some very lucky guess work. Consider how the auction might go after 1D-1S or 1D-1NT. The key is West’s ♣A.

is an often over-looked element of declarer play. Only a very perceptive South would be able to work out that it was necessary to jettison spades from Q964 and hang grimly on to 652 of clubs! Full marks to any South who does so, he is almost certain to be re-warded with a plus score. Little things can mean a lot in bridge. ■

BRIDGE is fattening. Well, it certainly was at the Gold Coast Bridge

Club where the homemade sweet fare was plentiful and accessible as you waited for the next round to start. I’ve heard it said that the blood rushes to your stomach to help digest your indulgences and leaves your brain, which needs it for good bridge results. Must add that to my list of excuses for a poorly played hand.the format of Butler Pairs on Sat-urday and Swiss teams on Sunday was popular for those who did not wish to play all weekend. The 40 pairs event on Saturday was won by Shar-on Birrer and John Morris, and the 24 teams by the familiar winning combi-nation of Neville Francis/Ralph Parker with Betty Lee/Mike Robson.the most interesting hand Eva Berger and I played against Neville and Ralph was the first one after lunch.

Thanks partner! or something like that to Eva. I’d much rather she had played this hand in 6S knowing the 9 card fit, and it was right after lunch.Neville (East) led his singleton diamond, West played the queen and I won with the king. I played a heart to

Gold Coast the ace and got the bad news. then a spade to my ace; more bad news. I drew trumps and played another spade. Neville won and played a club so I was stuck on the table and now I was going off.at the other table 6S made so it was 14 IMPs away. Asking around the room revealed many others were in 6h when their partners chose to use Jacoby with 3-card support, all going down except one. those in 6S made except one who said there was no interference so was unaware of the wild distribution. From the bidding I knew the likely distribution so I should have either won the diamond lead on the table, preserving the diamond entry to hand, or played on spades before drawing trumps. If East wins the second round of spades and puts me on the table, I can draw trumps and lead another spade from hand, finessing for 12

IN my last column, I suggested a rule (or “guideline”, to use a less

definitive word), for overcalling a 1NT opening, the point being that it’s sometimes better to defend 1NT than to declare your own hand. It works like this: count the losers in your hand, and subtract that total from the combined length of your two longest suits. If the result is 2 or more, it’s OK to bid something. If less than 2, defend. Eg ♠Kxxxx ♥Kxxxx ♦x ♣xxYou have 7 losers (2 in spades, 2 in hearts, 1 in diamonds, and 2 in clubs), and the length of your two longest suits is 10 (5+5). 10 – 7 = 3. this is more than the requisite 2, so yes, you should bid, according to the guideline, even though you’re a bit short on points. It would have been a good idea to use the guideline here on this hand from the australian Swiss Pairs in Launceston. You hold:

♠J ♥AJ862 ♦A1065 ♣J62

and the opponents opened an Acol 1NT (12-14) ahead of you. Do you bid? Thinking that the 1NT opener was

BRISBANE ZONE INTERCLUB TEAMS - SUNDAY NOV 11

EVERY year the Brisbane zone runs an event whose main objective is to get all clubs in the zone to participate in a friendly day competing against all other clubs. there are three sections dependent on master point status so no-one need play out of their league. this year it was QCBC’s turn to host

the event. Most of the clubs pay the entry fee for their teams and the members are chosen not necessarily for their prowess at the bridge table, but more for what they contribute to the club as a thank you for their help during the year.Out of the thirteen clubs in the Brisbane area, only seven managed any representation which is a real

shame as it really is a lovely day and a great introduction for the ‘congress wary’ players.the sectional winners were:a teams – QCBCB teams – RedcliffeC teams – Northern Suburbswith Toowong taking out the overall trophy.all clubs are only able to run these events because of the dedication by their members to provide a service to others and QCBC excelled itself with a wonderful smorgasbord luncheon provided by a band of club workers.hopefully we will see all Brisbane clubs participating next year. ■

weak, the decision was to bid 2H here. It looked OK, 11 points, (not the most attractive 11 points) and nine cards in two suits. But as it turned out, it was far from safe. Both sides were vulnerable. the next hand said, “Double”, and that was passed out.2HX didn’t fare too well, and the result was –1100! Ouch! If only we’d used the “Guideline”. There are 8 losers (1 in spades, 2 in hearts, 2 in diamonds and 3 in clubs), and the total of the two longest suits is 9. 9–8=1. Not right to bid - defend instead.

Although EW can make 3NT, –1100 far outweighs this! I’ve received many comments on that last article, and I’m pleased that you are wanting to use judgement in these situations. Please keep any hands which are relevant, and forward to me at [email protected] you a Merry Christmas, and many bridge triumphs in 2008. ■

MOSt of the changes made in the 2007 Laws of Duplicate Bridge are to improve word-

ing of the 1997 Laws, to add extra detail about their application and to incorporate the many interpretations made to the current laws over the past 10 years. With a couple of exceptions, Law 27 about insufficient bids being the most notable, players and directors alike will have few problems with the much awaited new laws. I don’t think anyone should be getting their knickers in too much of a twist. Many of the new laws provide options for the Regulating authority, which is a new term, essentially replacing “sponsoring organisation” used now. Making all the decisions as to which options are to be adopted in australia and/or Zone 7 will take time. as I write, the date for implementation in australia remains uncertain. It may not be as early as was originally suggested and all I can say for sure (touch wood) is that it will be prior to 30th September, 2008.the bridge world also awaits publica-tion by the World Bridge Federation of an “appendix or memorandum of discussion” that will be helpful to directors. as touched on above, very few areas are attracting widespread debate at the moment. I have re-stricted my comments below to just a few of the apparently clear cut areas to give the murkier waters a chance to settle. Nothing is to be gained by interpreting laws differently from the rest of australia. I understand that with previous editions, some laws needed years of application before the correct method evolved.

Emphasis has been placed on removing the word “penalty” whenever the director is merely to undo damage caused by an infraction. this will go a long way towards dispelling the myth that the director is called to a table to punish offenders. Directors will continue to penalize irregularities that warrant punishment.that hands will be totally random, however dealt, is enshrined. Events designed for the replaying of past deals will be excluded from this requirement.Under the new laws, players should shuffle their cards before returning them to the board. Common sense suggests that sorting cards into suits for the next player who has difficulty doing so will still be OK, regardless of whether instructed to do so by the director or done out of consideration for one’s fellow man.Rectification for an established revoke by a player who did not win the revoke trick will be limited to the transference of one of any tricks won after the revoke. Winning the revoke trick will still incur the transference of the revoke trick plus one of any tricks won after the revoke. An adjusted score may be assigned, as now, if greater damage is caused by a revoke. Declarer will be permitted to require that a quitted trick be pointed the correct way. Dummy and the defenders may also draw attention to this irregularity but only until a lead is made to the following trick.the auction period will commence for a side when either partner with-draws his cards from the board and not when either partner looks at his hand. the auction will end if all four

players pass (No Bid or Passed In to be entered as a score of zero) or when there are three consecutive passes in rotation subsequent to the last bid and catering for doubles and redoubles, and subject to a pass be-ing out of rotation. the auction period will end when either defender faces an opening lead subsequent to the end of the auction. the time between the auction ending and the auction period ending earns a new term, Clarification Period. Inadvertent Calls wi l l become Unintended Calls however their treatment will be essentially the same. the current “Delayed or Purposeful Correction” of intended calls will be limited to situations where LhO accepts the substituted call. If not accepted then the original call will stand and that will be the end of that. the laws on unauthorised information will apply to the substituted call that was not accepted.Spectators in the playing area will be subject to the control of the director under the regulations for an event. that spectators must have no conversation with a player is taken out of parenthesis. the “no conversation” law is frequently broken. Currently, an absent member is deemed to concur to an appeal. this will no longer be so once the new laws come into effect. an appeal shall not be heard unless both members of a partnership in a pairs event or the cap-tain of a team concur to the appeal.Several other important changes require action by the Regulating authority before I can tell you what they will mean to Australia. I think the new law book will be seen as a big improvement on the current one and I look forward to its implementation in australia.
