Presidents Message:

Editor: Charlene Myers

The big happening this month is the Julian Rendezvous on Veterans Day, November 11. Over 60 have

signed up already. Big prizes for the gold panning contest. Big prizes for the metal detecting contest and

those who participate in the metal detecting contest are eligible to do the relic hunt afterwards. Three or

four clubs are attending. Lots of camaraderie between clubs. Plus, the Julian Mine Company will be open

just for us to enjoy.

Many of us went to the outing in the Randsburg area this past month. I didn’t get the chance to go, so I will

have to wait and hear the stories at the meeting. There were many prospectors out in the Duisenburg area at

the same time. There was the Sleepy Bear Octoberfest and also a LDMA/Duisenburg outing. Hopefully,

everyone was where they were supposed to be…

We only have the one GPAA membership kit left. If you want the single membership, let me know. Only

$70.00.

Something new has come up. An event close by at the Lakeside Rodeo Grounds. Saturday and Sunday,

December 5th

and 6th

. The El Cajon Gem and Mineral Society asked us if we wanted to participate and set

up a booth. There’s a lot we could do but like always, it takes volunteers. I’m going to throw it out to the

members and let them decide. The gem society is offering us booth space for half the price of only $40.00

for local clubs. Let me know if you want to volunteer. Anyway, if you just want to go see what they have,

you have the dates.

Cargos are scheduled for the November third weekend. Some will be there and some may be at the Potholes

outing put on by the SPMA organization. And then we have the December Christmas dinner scheduled for

the first part of December. Sign up and show up. We still have too many signing up and then we buy the

food and they don’t show up. I hope there are signup sheets for all these events.

I believe I have covered it all here. I think there were many other metal detecting hunts at the beaches and

parks. We’ll save those stories for the meetings. I know I have been enjoying many park hunts. Found

enough for maybe two gallons of gas and also some trinkets and rings. Jerry and I went beach metal

detecting. I found the keys to a rental car. We drove thru the parking lot while I pushed the alarm button.

We found that the car was still there and we went looking for a potential looser. We found them and we

chalked it down to our good deed for the day. That’s it for now. Keep your thoughts and actions golden

and karma may take care of the rest.

Searching the Beaches: By Frank Trutta

On our outing to Pacific Beach everyone found coins. No jewelry of any value was recovered. Tom Alaniz

found 29 coins for $3.20; John Howe came up with 8 coins for 63 cents and only one pull tab. We are

changing his nick name to “No Tab Johnny”. I got 32 coins for $2.85, my wife Zee had 15 coins for $2.40,

Brian Kinnear had 21 coins for $1.73 and about one pound of misc. junk, Jerry Kaplan beat us all with 63

coins for $4.26 and 3 junk rings my new customer Morgan Carstens had 13 coins for $1.44 and a rubber duck

on his first time out.

Next month we will go to La Jolla Shores November 22. Come around sun-up. We will meet at 10 a.m. to

show our treasures or complain. Should you have any questions call me at my shop, Columbia Metal

Detectors 760 743-8516 or catch me on my cell phone 760 291-7900.

Hunt smart!

Metal Detecting with John: By John Howe

TSSD's October 10th Metal Detecting Outing was at Mission Beach @ the jetty. Lots of volleyball players

and not many on the beach. We only had 3 hunters, probably because I changed the date. We found a total of

74 coins for $7.87. The best find was Cliff's Nixon watch. Here are the results sorted by $$ found....

John Howe 36 coins @ $4.36

Cliff Vaughn 26 cions @ $1.86, a nice "new" Nixon watch, ear buds

Brian Kinnear 12 coins @ $1.65, a token

A note about the Coinshooters seeded hunt on Oct 11. Over 4000 coins & tokens ($400) were buried. If you

were thinking of attending, you missed an opportunity for almost nonstop coin-scooping. There were only 10

hunters so there were plenty of targets for every hunter. I was so bust scooping I was actually glad to hear a

quiet detector! Given that this hunt was an anomaly, here's what I found...$21 in the hunt, 54 wheaties, 3 $2

bills, 3 buffalo nickels, 1 v-nickel and 1 Rosie. Brian, Cliff and I went out for an after-hunt and I found

another $10 and Brian found another $14. We had to stop after an hour from exhaustion!

I feel bad for the club. This isn't a money-making event, but attendance is usually much better. I hope there'll

be better attendance for their January event.

The November outing will be at Ocean Beach on Nov 8. Details to follow.

TSSD Membership: Membership to Treasure Seekers of San Diego is free. We do not charge annual dues. All that is asked is that you attend meetings, participate and support the group through its opportunity drawings

and events. To maintain membership, you MUST attend one meeting every four months.

1st

meeting: Complete and turn in a membership application.

2nd

meeting: You will be given your TSSD membership card.

3rd

meeting: You will be able to purchase a TSSD Claims Guide with proof of your

membership card.

G.P.A.A.: Treasure Seekers of San Diego is a chapter of G.P.A.A.. This does not require you to become a member of G.P.A.A. but if you are, please advise them that you are also a member of TSSD, so that we are

eligible for ‘points’ from your membership. TSSD uses those ‘points' to obtain opportunity raffle items.

Did you know…

1. If you invite a guest to one of the claims held by TSSD you MUST be in attendance. Writing a note

or permission slip to be on the claim and prospecting WITHOUT you is a NO-NO. This is for

liability reasons. In the last several months TSSD members have come across people working our

claims with these so-called permission slips (and verbal permission) from individual members.

2. A mining claim only holds the rights to the minerals and the land is normally owed by BLM. But

there are laws and regulations that govern a mining claim and the liabilities that go with it. And we,

as Treasure Seekers of San Diego, need to protect our rights and liabilities to our claims.

3. The same goes for the GPAA claims. Please refer to the GPAA mining claim handbook for their

rules.

4. Treasure Seekers of San Diego looks forward to many good years of prospecting for the members

and we do not want to lose any of our claims due to a violation. Again guests are always welcome –

but you need to be in attendance with their presence. And they must sign TSSD’s liability form in

order to prospect.

TSSD has equipment that it loans to its members. All we ask is that anything that is checked out is

returned in the same or better condition than when it was borrowed. It is understandable that with the

nature of our hobby, the equipment will get some bumps and bruises, which is acceptable. But if parts

are lost or broken, it is the responsibility of the ‘borrower” to repair or replace missing or broken parts.

Further details of the equipment check out policy is on the form which you will sign when receiving the

item.

Earl Sterrett, 858-922-4547, will be able to assist you with the equipment checkout. He asks that you

give him a couple of days’ notice when you might need something, and when items are returned that

they are CLEAN. All equipment must be returned by the meeting following when it was checked out.

Equipment is located at Diablo Mini Storage in Escondido.

TSSD Library: Treasure Seekers of San Diego has a tremendous library for its members’ usage. Librarian, Roz Laffoon, will gladly assist you in checking out books, magazines, VHS/DVD’s that show you gold

locations and history, treasure hunting, maps and knowledge of what to look for. Anything that is

related to gold, gems and treasure hunting is available.

Claims Assessment Work Form: Each and every time you are at one of TSSD’s claims, you should be completing a Claims Assessment Work Form (located in the front of the claims guides, or at the meetings from the Claims Guide Seller).

This form needs to be turned into Robert Cook, TSSD Claims Manager, at the meetings or e-mailing it

to him at: [email protected] or surface mail to: 1941 Rockhoff Road, Escondido, CA 92026-1113.

Needed information required: Claim used, Members name, Date used, Total people prospecting and

time on the claim, Type of work done (clean up, maintain, filling in holes, etc.), Members signature,

Claims access, Vehicle access, Claim Markers, Claims Guide Directions, Type of equipment used, Type

of gold found.

It sounds like a lot, but it really is not. This information is needed to prove that our claims are being

worked. If BLM questions us as to the use of our claims or wants to close one of our areas to

prospecting we want to be able to produce records that show that our claims are being used.

Claim Assessment Work forms are available at the sign in table. Please return to Robert Cook.

Treasure Seekers of San Diego County

Mission Statement Treasure Seekers of San Diego County (T.S.S.D.) was officially organized on May 21, 2003 when the election of

officers was held. We are a G.P.A.A. chapter. Non G.P.A.A. members may attend meetings and participate in the

raffle, but are not eligible to vote, hold office, be on the claims committee, or utilize G.P.A.A. claims. The

purpose of this organization is to provide an environment to increase public awareness, with education and

training, of locating, identification and legal removal of minerals, cashes and treasures while keeping in mind the

preservation of the environment and wild habitat.
