    LANDING SHIP TANK

    1. Characteristics.

    a. Capacity-Accommodation for 18 officers and 168 enlisted men, and 500 to 2100 short tons,

depending on length of trip,-landing beach, etc.

    (1) Deadweight tons bulk cargo, none: Available deck space for mobile equipment, 10,000sq. ft.

    (2) 200 deadweight tons bulk cargo: Available deck space for mobile equipment, 8300 sq. ft.

    (3) 300 deadweight tons bulk cargo: Available deck space for mobile equipment, 7300 sq. ft.

    (4) 100 deadweight tons bulk cargo: Available deck space for mobile equipment, 6200 sq. ft.

    b. Draft for beaching 3' 6" forward, 12' aft.

    c. Overall length-328 feet.

    d. Width of top deck-50 feet.

    e. Width of tank deck (clear) 28' 6".

    f. Elevator-18' x 14' with 10-ton capacity.

    g. Width of ramp-12 feet.

    2. Loading. The basic principles of loading LST's are enumerated below:

    a. Tank Deck.

    (1) Place all drum stock and other supplies which cannot be mobile loaded, except rations,in the stern.

    (2) Place a large bulldozer (a good one) in the very bow of the ship.

    (3) Place narrow equipment in the two outside aisles and wide equipment in the centeraisle. The center aisle is cleared first on unloading thus by making the center aislethe widest aisle, more maneuver room is available for unloading equipment in the out-side aisle.

    (4) Widths of equipment vary such that the final plan will not have a center aisle of uniformwidth. At the stern of the center aisle will probably be no wider than the two outsideaisles but it should taper to a maximum width at the bow of the ship.

    (5) Most mobile equipment should be loaded in the bow of the ship. Equipment which has tobe towed, and to which no prime mover is directly attached, should be loaded in the stern. All equipment should be backed on so that it may be unloaded readily. There willalways be more time for loading than unloading.

    b. Main Deck.

    (1) Put all vehicles and small trailers on this deck. The elevator will handle 10 tons, butventilator and other obstructions are so numerous that for compact loading small itemsare desirable.

    (2) Some LST captains will permit loading 21/2-ton trucks on hatch covers, others will not.The loading and unloading is faster with trucks on the rear hatches.

    3. Keeping the above basic principles in mind the loading plan in any particular case may be easilydeveloped by the use of a scale drawing of the two decks and cardboard models (plan outline only) pre-

cisely cut to scale. A model should be cut out of every, piece of equipment so that the entire plan for

all ships may be laid out at the same time.

Loading with Engineer Equipment1. In planning the loading of a Liberty Ship, a scale drawing of the lower holds, the 'tween deck

holds, and the top deck showing all obstructions and vertical clearances is necessary. Cardboard scalemodels (plan outline only), with height and weight of equipment written thereon, should be preparedfor each item of equipment which is to be moved. It is noted that due to the convergency of the hullof the ship toward the keel, the area available for loading equipment in the lower holds depends onthe height to which bulk stores are first loaded in these holds, becoming a maximum when such storesare brought up to within 12' of the hatch combing, at which height the sides of the ship are then prac-tically vertical. A total of 3500 each 55 gal. drums or an equivalent volume of other bulk stores arerequired to bring holds numbers 2 and 4 up to this height.

    2. The attached plan for loading a Liberty Ship shows all holds filled with cargo and equipment. While this exact plan obviously will not fit specific cases, it represents how a ship was actually loadedand will furnish a good test as to the accuracy of your cardboard models and scale drawings. Thisparticular ship was very compactly loaded with only inches to spare between pieces of equipment. Inaddition to furnishing a good test as to the accuracy of your models, the loading plan referred to illus-trates several basic principles, the most important of which are enumerated here.

    a. Obtain sufficient bulk stores which are awaiting shipment to your destination to build upthe lower holds to within at least 12' of the hatch combing.

    b. The bottleneck on a Liberty Ship lies in the fact that hatches numbers 1, 3, and 5 will onlytake 5-ton lifts. Hatch number 4 will only handle lifts of 15 tons (16 ton loads-D-7 tractors and Y2yard shovels-may be loaded if care is exercised, but a 20 ton load is too heavy for this hatch rigging). This means that all items weighing more than 5 tons must be loaded in hatches numbers 2 and 4 andon that part of the deck which they can be handled by the rigging of these hatches, and that all itemsweighing more than 16 tons must be loaded in hatch number 2. The load plan for hatches numbers2 and 4 and the deck should be developed first because the amount of equipment to be moved whichweighs over 5 tons generally will equal or exceed the available space for same.

    c. 2Ya ton cargo or dump trucks (weighing approximately 5% net tons) can be loaded inhatches numbers 1, 3, and 5.- Getting permission from the First Mate of the ship to do this will requirea lot of tact, since they invariably object to loading anything in these hatches that weighs a bit over5 tons. Some of them will even try to hold the lifts in these hatches down to 3 tons. Since you willneed all the trucks you can load, and seldom will any space be left in hatches numbers 2 and 4 fortrucks, it is essential to obtain permission to load same in hatches numbers 1, 3, and 5.

    d. A prime mover (tractor or vehicle) should be included in each hatch containing toweditems which cannot easily be manhandled.
