Back about a year ago, I needed a role in the troop for rank advancement. I

wasn’t quite ready at the time for a very large job, but I needed something. When

Mrs. Bennett asked for volunteers for a leadership position in our troop, I signed

up quickly. This position was for Troop Historian. At first, I thought that this

would be a very hard and frustrating job, but I quickly got used to it. This is how I

got to typing on my keyboard to talk to you awesome people for a rank.

Although the position is enjoyable, it is still work and it still has require-

ments. We still have to go to meetings and plan for our articles. We also then

have to write the monthly articles. We proof read, edit, and make our Troop

newsletter. We scouts are the ones who keep the newsletter in check. That’s what

we do as historians.

This was a pretty good job, though. My favorite part was writing my crea-

tive articles, and I once got one of my stories picked by the District to share on

their website! I really did like it. It was exciting and fun, and could be quite amusing.

It had its kinks, but it was an all-around good and awesome job.

We will soon need new historians. I liked it and I think anyone could do it

for their leadership position. I believe people should try this to learn how to work

on creative Troop stories with deadlines. As my role soon comes to an end, I

hope some of you consider taking on this cool position.

As an American, I will do my best to— Be clean in my outdoor manners Be careful with fire Be considerate in the outdoors Be conservation-minded

SCOUTMASTER CORNER School is out for summer and at this time every year I hear the same,

"Can't wait to shred this APUSH notes", "We are having a note burning

party at the next campout." Often we are eager to leave behind the

knowledge we learned to relax for the summer and move on to the next

school year. In Scouting that is not the case. The Oath and Law are the

basis of everything we do in Scouting. These are our Ideals, we say them

every meeting. You promise to live by them the very first time you got

your Scout Patch, yet people still struggle to recite them. If you cannot

recite the Oath or Law how can you live by it? The knowledge we im-

part, just like school, is to be retained and lived. You might think you will

never need algebra again or that chemistry lab but at some point in your

life you will think back trying to remember how to neutralize an acid or

find the area of a circle. Do not let that happen to the Scout Oath, the

Scout Law and the things you learn in Scouting! Live these things every-

day and you will go very far. Knowledge IS power and the more you

know, the better a person you will be.

SPL NOTES

T R O O P 1 9 9 I N A C T I O N

The month of May could be considered one of the finer months for this troop. We

attended Camp Buffalo and had a blast (no pun intended) at the shooting campout. Several factors contributed to our success, such as aspiring young individuals stepping up to help with positions that needed filling, as well as working with a troop that continues to im-

press me with every campout. We also had some very nice skills demos, such as Mr. Ratt’s very informative shooting safety demo.

This campout also provided us with a preview of our next summer camp. I look forward to the coming months all of you.

Physical training is mostly used at Troop 199 in the morning to wake people up and give them

some exercise. I know exercise is “for something other than scouts” but if you can’t move around and do stuff, then you need to get in shape! So when the troop hikes, you can keep up and have fun with your friends on the hike. Usually, they call physical training P.T. That’s just physical training abbreviated. If you ever go to West Point with the troop, you will do some hardcore P.T. in the morning. One of the Ca-dets will wake you up (most likely Daniel Sprouse) and make you dress quickly and get out and do some exercise like push ups, sit ups, jumping jacks, squats and running. You will get down and dirty during that type of P.T. because you are on the ground. The P.T. the scouts do is nothing that bad or serious, but it does get you up and running. Now, there is one great thing about P.T. that everyone loves. It’s free! Mike R. Vipers

Flags In/Out

Flags in/out is just as the title suggests, putting flags out, and taking them back in,

but there is a deeper meaning to it than just that. We are putting flags out to honor veter-ans that have served our country and have passed. Every year at Oaklawn Cemetery, Troop 199 will meet and have donuts because it is earlier in the morning. Then we will split into groups and go to different parts of the cemetery to place flags over the head-stones of fallen soldiers. This year, we had the biggest turn out for attendance. In years past we have had a little less than half the troop show up. It is not just Troop 199 scouts either; there are siblings to scouts and sometimes scouts from other troops. We even had a Webelos scout attend one year. We do this every Saturday before Memorial Day. It is a very simple gesture with a much greater meaning. Flags In is just the opposite of Flags Out. Every year, Troop 199 goes out and col-lects all the flags that they placed. We do this the Saturday after Memorial Day, every year. I think Flags In/Out is a great way for scouts to honor veterans that have passed and I am glad that we continue to do it year after year. Vipers, Smiles
