Today’s airspace users are grappling with
the air traffic control system’s inability to
manage an ever-growing amount of traffic.
Outdated infrastructure and operating
methods hamper the industry’s ability to
operate efficiently.
Boeing is working with partners around the world to improve today’s global air traffic management (ATM) system to enhance safety, improve operational and environmental efficiency and prepare for the expected growth in global air travel. A transformational ATM solution is needed in order to optimize and enhance the efficiency of the worldwide system.
The Boeing vision of a transformational system is based on satellite-based navigation that takes advantage of sophisticated airplane flight management systems and other advanced technologies. Key elements of the future transformational system include digital command and control, trajectory-based operations, satellite-enabled technology and the integration of ground-based systems supporting the capabilities of modern airplanes and secure network-centric operations. Boeing is committed to transforming the current ATM system into a system that can meet expanding needs for decades to come.
Global Industry ContractsSE-2020. A Boeing-led industry team was awarded a major research and development support contract, called Systems Engineering 2020, valued at $1.7 billion for the Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen) by the U.S. federal Aviation Administration (fAA). The contract is designed to help the agency move from NextGen concepts to solutions that can be implemented in the near term.
SESAR. Boeing is an associate member of the Joint Undertaking for Europe’s next-
generation ATM system, Single European Sky ATM Research (SESAR). Boeing
is a subcontractor to Airbus and Selex in multiple work packages,
working to ensure interoperability with the U.S. NextGen program.
SWIM. Boeing successfully completed a contract with the fAA to develop the System-Wide Information Management (SWIM) system that will allow
data to be moved seamlessly among legacy, enduring and
future ATM systems. Boeing also completed an equivalent project in
Europe, called SWIM-SUIT, to ensure integration between the U.S and
European systems.
PBN. Boeing ATM expertise is being used to develop and deploy performance-based navigation (PBN) around the world, working closely with airlines, airports, air navigation service providers and regulators.
Volpe. Boeing ATM expertise is being used to design, develop, deploy and integrate future NextGen systems, capabilities and concepts. The research and development efforts performed under this contract supports NextGen which leverages new technologies to transform the U.S. National Airspace System into a safer, more secure system while improving the capacity of air transportation system.

Design for the Environment Boeing has successfully incorporated environmental considerations in all its activities; design through production, in-service operations and the end-of-life of our products and services.
Improving fuel consumption and reducing CO2 emissions is at the core of our efforts. The International Air Transport Association estimates that ATM improvements alone could raise fuel efficiency and reduce CO2 emissions by up to 12 percent. By implementing ATM technologies such as performance-based navigation and Inflight Optimization Services, ATM improvements can be made today.
