    A COCKTAIL IS A STIMULATING LIQUOUR COMPOSED OF SPIRITS, SUGAR, WATER & BITTERS

    1862One of the �rst cocktails to be named and recognized it can be traced

    back to an 1862 recipe for the Martinez

    1917First cocktail party ever thrown was by Mrs Julius Walsh of Missuori

    in May 1917

    1920 - 1933Prohibition in the USA, meant it was illegal to manufacture, sell,

    transport, import or export intoxicating liquours. Despite this, much of the general public still had ways to gain access to theses liquours often

    through speakeasies and private parties.

    �e popularity of cocktail at this time was due to the need to cover up the bad taste of some of the illegally produced liquours being smuggled by the bootleggers. Some of the cocktail recipes used today were invented in the

    days of prohibition as cocktail recipes �ourished in the illegal bars, parties and clubs of the major American cities.

    1936 or 1948�e Margarita is born. We are not certain who can take credit for

    this drink, many have laid claim to being the inventor of the Margarita. In 1936 Danny Negrete made up the cocktail just

    before his brother’s wedding and presented it to his future sisterin-law, Margarita, as a gift.

    1972Maxwell ’s Bar & Grill, �rst opened in Hampstead, London.

    Pioneers in the creation of new drinks, cocktails became increasingly popular and Maxwell ’s still leads the London revolution of a classic

    cocktail bar headed by cocktail bartenders.
