The Board of Directors and Staff wish everyone a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy and Healthy New Year, A Happy Chanukah and a Happy Kwanzaa.

As I sit here writing this article I am looking out the window watching the snow fall. It is 3:30 AM October 28th, 2008. Once again winter comes early to Towamensing Trails as well as the rest of our little corner of the world.

Your Board of Directors has been working very closely with our Maintenance Department and has made sure that we have an adequate supply of salt, anti skid and gravel to start off the winter season.

If you have been near the main-tenance department at all within the past month or so I am sure that you have noticed a difference.

We have replaced our Mainte-nance supervisor.

Mr. Harvey Justice is our new Maintenance Supervisor. We have hired two new employees for the maintenance depart-ment. These two now bring us

up to our full complement of staff in this department. Our staff has been reevaluating our snow plowing priorities. Sec-tions are being reassigned and plans have been implemented for a backup contingent if snow becomes unmanageable.

Lets all hope that we do not get the ice like last year, because no matter what you do without heavy traffic and sun salt will not work below 19 degrees.

It seems as if summer has just ended and our office staff has already sent out our invoices for 2009. If you have a lot with a house your bill will be the same this year as last year.

Committee Reports

Publication Committee: We continue to urge you to send news from the Trails. Also, pictures of events are welcome. We are still accepting ads for the Trails Topics.

Firewise Committee:

The Firewise Committee meeting for Oct. 2, 2008 was cancelled. We applied for and received a Grant in the amount of $8500 to trim back trees damaged during the 2005 ice storm along the main roads. This will allow better access for our fire departments. We are using four young men from the Youth Services to trim back these trees and chip the branches, weather permitting. The project is expected to last two months. Our next meeting will be held Dec. 4, 2008 at 1PM in the Teepee.

Activities Committee: Christmas Party: The Children’s Christmas Party will be held on Saturday, December 13 from 10 AM to 12 noon in the lounge at the Community Center.

Children ages 10 and younger are welcome and must be registered at the TeePee (570-722-0302) before December 6. Because of limited space, no more than two (2) adults per child may attend.

Santa will be stopping by, so come and visit. Feel free to bring refreshments. They are always appreciated!

Volunteers: We’re still in need of volunteers! If you are interested in joining the Activities Committee, please fill out an application. Applications are available at the TeePee or can be downloaded from the Trails’ website at www.towamensing.com

ACC Committee: For Property Owners who have a contractor coming into Towamensing Trails they must obtain a contractor vehicle pass, whether a permit is needed or not. Even if it is inside work being done.

Civil Penalty Committee: Happy Holidays!

At this time of year, please obey all traffic rules in Towamensing Trails. Maintain the posted speed limits and stop at all stop signs.

Please go to the office and pick up the latest copies of our Rules of Conduct and ACC Rules. Doing this a few times a year or calling to ask if any new rules have been enforced will help you to avoid receiving a Civil Penalty.

Have a safe, healthy and prosperous 2009.

Members of the New York Fire Department and Somer-set Volunteer Fire Department unveil a cross made of steel from the north tower of the World Trade Center during a dedication ceremony at the Shanksville Volun-teer Fire Company in Shanksville, PA on Sunday, Au-gust 24. As hundreds of firefighters bowed their heads in prayer, a cross made out of steel from the WTC was dedicated near where United Airlines Flight 93 crashed into the ground on September 11. The 2-ton, 14 foot high cross sits on a concrete base shaped like the Pentagon at the Shanksville Volunteer Fire Co., just a few miles from where the plane crashed. The cross made a 311 mile journey from Brooklyn on Saturday, accompanied by hundreds of motorcyclists, many of them current or retired NY firefighters.

MEANINGFUL CROSS TAKEN FROM THE TIMES NEWSPAPER

RECYCLING BY: JULIE FOLEY Attention all Towamensing Trails residents. Please watch for a composting workshop, here in Towamensing Trails, in the near future. When you attend you will learn how to further reduce what goes into the landfill by recycling much of your kitchen waste such as vegetable peeling, fruit scraps, egg shells, coffee grounds and tea bags while creating invaluable soil amendments for the Pocono clay soil!

PAGE 4 TRAILS TOPICS

This is an effort on our part to tie the three events together: The World Trade Center, The Pentagon and Shanksville. Chief Terry Schaffer said the cross would serve as inspiration whenever his department responds to a call. The brotherhood coming down from New York and New Jersey and showing up here to pay their respect to this piece of steel was outstanding. Gary Sims, a firefighter with NY’s Ladder22, was among those in the motorcycle escort and said he took part “to help carry the word,” of Flight 93. The crash killed the 40 passengers and crew members onboard.

This thank you letter was sent to the members of the Trails, Lake and Tennis Club, who once again sent a generous donation to this remarkable mission.

Dear Friend of OTOH:

Please accept our sincere appreciation for your donation of $2,000.00 to Operation: Touch Of Home. Be-ing a small, non-profit organization, we operate on a very tight budget and expenses are ever-increasing. It goes without saying that it is the generosity of friends like you that allows us to continue our mission of providing essentials and comforts to our local service men and women serving in Iraq and Afghani-stan.

Thank you very much

Sincerely, Operation: Touch of Home.

We are so very grateful for your support. Thank you for always remembering us and our troops, especially those who are sacri-ficing so much for our freedom. This donation will go for a long way in making them more comfortable. We really appreciate your loyalty.

A Train in the Trails?

Dog walking duty, one snowy day, proved to be a rather eye opening experience. As we passed a home with a beautiful boulder filled yard something caught my attention. Train tracks! My next thought was ‘am I really see-ing what I think I am seeing?’ Upon further investigation I found it to be true. The tracks stood out from the snow that was gathering around them and meandered around some rocks to the right and past some small build-ings to the left and then under the house deck. The track appeared to be about 3-4” wide. For some months I wondered about the railroad setup. That summer I had the pleasure of meeting the family to whom the trains belong.

They are some of the old timers as they have lived in Trails for over 30 years. The remote controlled railroad required about nine tons of stone to make the track beds and over 1000 feet of track. The track extends from one side of the house, across the back to the other side of the house weaving in and out between large boulders that make great mountains. The owner says “the whole thing is a labor of love” and was created by father, 2 sons, and 2 grand-sons over a five year period. The project is ongoing. In the last year and a half they ex-tended the track deeper into the property to an imaginary coal mine. Naturally, the whole scene was not complete without depots, houses, water filling tanks for the steam en-gines and other buildings necessary for any mini train setup. The natural foliage…..ferns, blueberry bushes and other shrubs, etc. make for a very beautiful setting. What a Fairyland like place.

An instructor donned a fire suit and using an 8 oz cup at the end of a 10 foot pole tossed water onto a grease fire. The results got the attention of the students. The water, being heavier than oil, sinks to the bottom where it instantly becomes superheated. The explosive force of the steam blows the burning oil up and out. On the open field, it became a thirty foot high fireball that resembled a nuclear blast. Inside the confines of a kitchen, the fire ball hits the ceiling and fills the entire room. Do not throw water on a grease fire. Also, do not throw sugar or flour on a grease fire. One cup of either creates the explosive force of two sticks of dynamite.

If you should accidentally have a pot or pan of grease catch fire……

Turn off the heat. Calmly, wet a dish towel, wring it out and place it over the fire and the fire will go out. Wait until all is cooled before touching.

Most fires and related deaths and injuries in residences are preventable. It is important that you take the necessary precautions to ensure your home is fire safe. Install and maintain smoke alarms and sprinklers, and establish and practice your escape plan. By being prepared, you can help reduce the chances of fire injury or even death.

Listed below are the leading causes of residential fires.

•Cooking (41 percent) and heating (13 percent) are the leading causes of residential building fires. Cooking also ac-counts for approximately 25 percent of fires that injure civilians. Smoking (20 percent) is the leading cause of fatal residential building fires.

Information found on internet

Important reminder:

It’s important to test smoke alarms monthly and replace batteries with new ones at least once a year.

KEEP FIREPLACES AND WOOD STOVES CLEAN SOURCE: THE WEB Have your chimney or wood stove inspected and cleaned annually by a certified chimney specialist.

• Clear the area around the hearth of debris, decorations and flammable materials.

• Always use a metal mesh screen with fireplaces. Leave glass doors open while burning a fire.

• Install stovepipe thermometers to help monitor flue temperatures.

• Keep air inlets on wood stoves open, and never restrict air supply to fireplaces. Otherwise you may cause creosote buildup that could lead to a chimney fire.

• Use fire-resistant materials on walls around wood stoves.

• Be sure to let ashes cool completely and dispose of properly.

• Do not burn any material that is not intended to be used in a fireplace or stove.

Heads collide on the soccer field. Both come up with bloody mouths. One has a chipped tooth and a bruised area on the gum. The other is taken to a hospital with two teeth knocked out and even worse, a concussion. Guess which kid was wearing a mouth guard? Mouth guards protect your teeth and head. During contact sports, it acts as a barrier or cushion preventing teeth from banging together. More importantly, it prevents the jaw from forcing upward into the skull and brain thus protecting you from a concussion. Not only is it vital in sports like football and hockey, but with soccer, basketball, skate boarding, baseball and softball, as well. Dental professionals can make them in your team colors, too! In fact the whole team can have matching school color smiles and sneers! You can also purchase the kind of guards you heat in hot water at home and then bite into to make it fit. Whatever kind of mouth guard you use, make sure it becomes a habit when playing sports.

Babies who are given acetaminophen for fever are more likely to develop asthma as they get older. Acetaminophen, also know as paracetamol, is a very effective fever reducer that is often given to babies as an alternative to aspirin (which can cause a potentially fatal illness in children called Reye’s syndrome). Acetaminophen is the active pain-relieving ingredient to such common over-the-counter drugs as Tylenol, Midol, and Anacin, and is present in such prescription medications as Percocet and Vicodin. A five-year study of 200, 000 babies and children has shown that if an infant is given acetaminophen, he or she is 46 percent more likely to have developed asthma by 6 or 7. Study author Richard Beasley tells BB Crews.com that the findings do not mean that parents should never administer acetaminophen to their infants or young children but should use the medication only when absolutely necessary—that is, to lower a fever exceeding 102 degrees.

Tip of the week….. Source: Men's Health How to stay healthy while flying: □ Schedule some tea time. Begin drinking “20 ounces of black tea daily” before your trip. According to the National Academy of Sciences, “it causes the body to secrete two to four times more interferon,” strengthening the immune system. □ Eat and drink properly. “Hydration is key,” as is figuring out the “right preflight meal.” Before flying, “eat a protein-packed meal,” such as a burger. Drink “64 to 80 ounces of water” per day. “Limit alcohol, caffeine, and other diuretics,” and avoid in-flight coffee and tea, which are usually made with a jet’s tank water. □ Talk to your doctor. An airplane’s reduced air pressure and lower oxygen levels can result in headaches and lower oxygen levels can result in headaches, nausea, and dizziness. Before departing, consider asking your physician for acedtazolamide, a drug that helps your body metabolize more oxygen. Taking 250 milligrams twice a day after traveling can relieve those symptoms.

HAPPENINGS…….. BY: DOLORES COSGROVE

PAGE 11 TRAILS TOPICS

It all began a cool, crisp fall morning at Willow Grove Park Mall. The “Chick-Fila Cow” greeted us as we arrived and Starbucks had hot coffee waiting. The Chestnut Hill Community came out in full force supporting us with snacks, flowers and smiles. After the 20 mile walk, we all settled down in camp for the night at Fairmount Park’s Belmont Plateau. We slept in our sleeping bags in pink pup tents.

Saturday was another beautiful day. The New Balance cheerleaders greeted us at pit stop 2 and the Mummers strutted at pit stop 3. Center city Philly painted the town pink with skyline and fountains. Kelly’s Drive beautiful scenery provided a gorgeous path.

Saturday evening was very cold in our tents and we slept mostly in all of our clothes...brrr.

Our final day began with cool weather and definite excitement in the air! The walk went through Philadelphia and surrounding suburbs to the final destination. Villanova University proved to be

the perfect site to end our journey, with it’s beauty and stadium seating for our families and our friends.

This was one of the most uplifting and emotional things that I have ever done. I was and still am, so proud of my Daughter, Terry (a breast cancer survivor )and my granddaughters, Chelsea and Danielle. Also, Joe, Danielle’s cousin and his girlfriend Jacleen. They walked the entire 60 miles and had some minor aches and pains. I, of course, was unable to do the full 60 but I gave it my very best. The money we raised

walking as TERRY’S GIRLS, will go a long way to helping Susan G. Komen for the Cure and The National Philanthropic Trust Breast Cancer Fund save lives. We thank TTPOA and the TLTC for their generous donations and to all who gave us checks and cash for the walk.

We walked, because we could not walk away!!!!!!

As we celebrate our 40 years of “wedded bliss” I have to admit I never envisioned a happier of “lifetimes” than what I have had the privilege of sharing over these many years together. We have shared together 3 wonderful children and 8 beautiful grandchildren, and all the expected ups

and downs. We are among many of the fortunate older generations to be of the ability to enjoy our dream. Mutually shared by us both, to enjoy the beautiful offerings of the Pocono Mountains! We have spent and shared with our family many years in the Pocono’s and am enjoying our “older years” together, where we both have the ability to share our joys and talents with our friends and neighbors all. We thank you all for the opportunity to be here and share what we have experienced through our life together!

I love you Pat, my husband and life partner and I thank you for where we are today in this wonderful adventure called “life’!

Love,

Me!!

Towamensing Trails…..continued

As we proceed into 1984 things are running pretty smoothly in the Trails. Elections were held for the first time to elect residents to the Board of Directors of the Trails.

Prior to that the community was run by the Broadscope Board of Directors. On Oct. 20, 1984 the first annual property owner’s meeting was held since the new board took office. For the next year the new board faced a very challenging and hectic transition.

We faced the same problems then as we do today such as unregistered vehicles, the lack of house numbers, break-ins, trash thrown along the roads etc. A Pennsylvania State Trooper held 3 meetings in the clubhouse to dis-cuss implementing a Town Watch program in the Trails and was very dismayed at the apparent lack of interest.

In the summer of 1984 the Trails sponsored a trip for dinner and a show as well as having an Ice Cream Social. The ladies water exercise classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays was mentioned for the first time in the Topics. Sounds like some fun things were happening. .

Now that our community was well established drastic changes were no longer taking place. We go from one year to the next fairly easily with just the run of the mill problems to deal with. However, in 1986 the lake was lowered 55-60 inches for a three month period from September thru December. This would have been the second time the lake was lowered since the inception of the Trails. The reasons being to locate and remove obstructions, improve the swimming area, move silt from the Clubhouse recreational area to name a few. Lowering the lake is something we face today but for much different reasons.

CERT Team Exercise (Community Emergency Response Team)

On the rainy, blustery Saturday of Oct. 25, 2008, the CERT Teams from Towamensing Trails and Indian Mountain Lakes met at the maintenance building to refresh our training and put our skills to use. This meeting al-lowed our teams to work and train together, share ideas, and develop a rela-tionship with each other. Our objective was to test communication between the radio setups, and refresh all members through practical exercise on what was learned during initial training.

The scenario for this exercise was an earthquake with wounded victims being placed at various locations within the maintenance buildings. The team’s object was to search for persons that might have been in the buildings when the earthquake hit. During the search several aftershocks were heard and felt. After locating and identifying the victims they were helped to a tri-age area where they would receive medical attention as needed.

When the exercise ended we found ourselves being critiqued by Mark Nalesnik of the Carbon County Emergency Management Agency. He was very pleased with our efforts to keep afresh what we have learned and our desire to be of service to our communities. Following the exercise a lite luncheon was enjoyed by all.

Participating Towamensing Trails CERT Members were: Ron McCuen (BOD liaison), Lil

McCuen, Bill Doscher, Jeanne and Arch Jamieson, Steve and Fran Casper, Mike Lutsch, John and Louise Houston, Nick and Greta Martocci, Barbara and Curtis Kehm.

CHILREN’S HALLOWEEN PARTY

On Saturday, October 25th in spite of the rain storm outside, our 44 lucky children enjoyed a wonderful Halloween party in-side the Community Center. Each child was given a large pumpkin to paint. That was followed by the games and the costume parade. There was Power Ranger, Black Cat, Transformer, Batman, Spiderman, Star Trooper, Double Trouble, an amazing Fire Truck Driver, and many more. Parents brought in great snacks for all and everyone joined in for the Electric Slide dance. Each child went home with a pumpkin bag filled with goodies.

Thanks again to the Activity committee for another successful party.

Surprise! Source: The web

I opened my eyes and my room was bright.

I wondered what had happened outside last night.

I opened the windows and let everyone know,

The world was covered with fluffy white snow.

I grabbed my mittens, my scarf and my suit,

And pulled on my brand new winter boots.

I ran outside and I started to play,

And I hoped that the snow was here to stay.
