Now in its 9th year, Binational Doors Open Niagara celebrates the best of Niagara’s binational architecture, heritage and design by providing residents and visitors with FREE ACCESS to our treasured landmarks. On Saturday, October 16 and Sunday, October 17, 2010, between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., 61 sites from communities throughout the Niagara Region in Southern Ontario and Erie and Niagara Counties in Western New York are yours to enjoy. Cross-Border Niagara hosts the only binational Doors Open event in North America, and this year will focus on “The Visionaries Behind the Scenes” – the founders, architects, builders and special stewards of these built assets and the legacy they have left in this region. Also part of this event is our annual Art of Architecture Photography Contest for adults over 18 and “architage” – a photography and scavenger hunt contest for youth from 5 to 17. Your chance to visit the sites, win great prizes and have your photos exhibited throughout Southern Ontario and Western New York. Visit www.doorsopenniagara.ca for full details. We are proud to be part of this international event, which began in France in 1984 as La Journee Portes Ouvertes in an effort to facilitate understanding and appreciation of local architecture, promote awareness of built heritage treasures and encourage community and visitor involvement in conserving these unique structures. Since 2002, over 150,000 visitors have toured over 150 sites, hosted by over 1000 volunteers in more than 20 of the municipalities in the Binational Niagara Region.
