Gulf Coast Quilters' Guild July 6, 2011

The meeting was called to order by President Cynthia Gilbert at 6:55 p.m., and she requested that cell phones be turned off. She welcomed all members, guests, the Mainland Quilt Guild raffle quilt, and our guest speaker, Sandra Chandler. Wanda Njaa moved to approve the minutes and treasurer's report as printed in the newsletter. The motion was seconded by Evelyn Forbis, and the motion carried. Congratulations are in order for Linda Steen, who won the Lakeview Quilt Guild raffle quilt in June. Unfinished Business: Wanda will get the new cordless mike for next month. We have several positions to fill: Advertising, Librarian, Bee Coordinator, and Parliamentarian. Cindi Pourchot volunteered for the Library position. New Business: Cynthia Magnant has the web site update almost complete, and it looks great! Patsie Blanchette announced that we will do show and share for the Blank fat quarter items during regular show and share. She is sending a card around for all of us to sign for Verla Perry, who is in the hospital. Please remember Marsha Fuller's sister in prayer. Anise Whitmeyer and Betty Findley are both recovering from knee surgery. Virginia Talent, 1st Vice-president announced that next month's program will be Donnette Moseley of StoryTime Quilts. Go on-line at www.StoryTimeQuilting.com to learn more about her. Also, if you see anything on the web site you would like to purchase, let her know, and she will bring it with her to the meeting, thus saving you shipping charges. Jackie Rodewald had lots of red/white/and blue color blocks turned in. Tanya Smith has had one of our round robin quilts for 3 months, and needs to turn in it, so others can do the work they signed up for. She also reminded those who signed up for Secret Sister that they need to bring (or send) their block every month so their secret sister isn't disappointed. We then had the current secret sister show and share. The 2012 Raffle quilt top is finished. It was shown by Jan DeAlmeida. It is called "Nature's Notebook," and is in soft yellows and blues. Originally, it was to be bound in the same fabric as the backing, but Jan showed us a yellow binding material, which she recommended, and we all agreed that the yellow binding really would make the quilt "pop." Bea Elliott said that we had 49 members present, with 3 guests. They are Sylvia Nelson, invited by Nancy Baker; Kasi Cotton, invited by Laurel Akim; and Anna Nichols, brought by her daughter, Evelyn Forbis. The door prize, which was a lot of goodies, was won by Jackie Rodewald. Madeline Meyer showed the "Blue Santa" raffle quilt to be quilted by Jeanne Whittle. She said that Carol Barnett had made 20 bags for the women's shelter. She also thanked Nancy Jo Baker, who is leaving us for Arkansas, for quilting all the community service quilts in the past few years. Remember that our September meeting is Community Service night. We will be making bags and/or quilts. Wanda Njaa is really getting excited about retreat, which is only a month away. Those who volunteer for set-up should get there about 9:00 a.m.; the others can get there at 11:00 a.m. We can sew until Sunday afternoon. Show and Share: Linda Steen - a teal blue and white star sampler quilt made for a wedding gift; and the Lakeview raffle quilt. Jeanne Whittle - "Autumn Leaves" from a Turning Twenty pattern in fall colors. Sheryle Clute - a Japanese lantern quilt and "Boots in the Attic," made from the auction blocks that she won. Doris Lehman - wouldn't give the name of the quilt, but she said a good one was, "Never Again." I noticed it did have mermaids in it. Laurel Akim - visited the San Jacinto Monument Museum, and asked if she could take a picture of an antique appliqued quilt. She copied it in red and blue civil war reproductions, and hand-quilted it. Beautiful! Gracie Webb - showed 3 quilts: two were scrappy quilts, done in a crazy quilt style. One was sewn and quilted on a regular sewing machine. The third was a regular size, made from scraps, that won third place at the Jefferson County Quilt Show in 2008. Susan Thompson - Shannon's Confirmation Quilt, done in purple and teal batiks, with a checkerboard front batik panel with "L-shaped" borders Jeanne Whittle - has finished the challenge quilt for the Auction - "Toward Arkansas." Patsie Blanchette -The ladies with the Blank fat-quarter challenge: Patsie - a birdie pin cushion , Opal Anderson - a turtle pin cushion, Cynthia Magnant - a shoe bag, Jackie Rodewald - a rotary cutter holder, Lydia Quiroz - a jewelry bag, Sheryle Clute - a Barbie doll sleeping bag, Cynthia Gilbert - a cup/flower pin cushion, and Gracie Webb - a potholder. Virginia Talent - a jellyroll quilt top - she plans to applique a lotus on it, before quilting. She also showed a Mondo bag, which was quite colorful. Jan DeAlmeida - showed the Christmas Round Robin which will go in our auction. Lydia Quiroz - showed her third appliqué block. Carol Barnett - took a lot of selvages and made strip blocks to make a quilt top. After a short break, Virginia introduced our guest speaker, Sandra Chandler, who invented a sewing machine foot for sewing just curves. She gave a trunk show, and demonstrated how the foot works, so you

don't have to pin to make the curves fit. Her templates are acrylic, so you can cut with your rotary cutter.
