Don’t
Fence Me in
Wildcat Kelly, looking mighty grim was standing by the sheriff’s side, and when that sheriff said, “I’m sending you to Jail”, Wildcat raised his head and cried… “Don’t fence me in.” Cole Porter wrote that piece in 1934, and it’s said to be one of the top 100 Country and Western songs of all times. Porter paid Robert Fletcher $250.00 for a poem he penned in his spare time. Fletcher served as roadway engineer in Montana. You can only imagine how many fences that man observed in his duty as a rural roadway engineer. I reckon that it was Roy Rogers and Dale Evans who helped make this song a real favorite of many fans and artists alike. It’s chord structure makes it an easy bet for a hit and one for which I find
difficult to forget.Given my great pleasure in that western
anthem I am very pleased that we have a new fence on the side yard between the rectory and the Church. By now many of you have passed by or seen it. As you might have guessed, it affords us with more arable land for gardening and useable space for domesticity. I am most grateful to Jacob Ballou for fulfilling a promising project for his Eagle Scout service requirement that became an extraordinary well-done completed project. I trust this article will serve as an enduring testimony to his ingenuity and fortitude.
Jacob himself was not so impressed with the design when he chose it, but his expression upon completion showed the pride and happiness of a job that started with an idea and became a reality—it really does change the landscape of this mini-campus we call St. Mary. The type of fence he created is common though it blends with the land and location to create an interior that resembles something like the Mystery Spot in Santa Cruz Mountains—you have to see it to believe it.
I am so grateful to Jacob, his father, his scouting friends, and extended family that
came together to complete their work—the new fence that gives new freedom to grow. There is true poetry in the work we do particularly when that work is directed to the benefit of one another.
Teamwork is essential to what we do in the Community of Los Gatos. The more we can find ways of bringing about our work together, may we find the promise of Jesus’ presence among us and the promise of God never to abandon us. This promise we celebrate every time we gather for work, prayer, recreation, nourishment, or rest. Any time we willingly serve we find the richness of creativity and an abundance of life.

arE you looking For a SatiSFying but FlExiblE VoluntEEr oPPortunity? Peninsula Food Runners is a local, volunteer organization dedicated to alleviate hunger and reduce food waste. We are in urgent need of drivers in the South Bay. Surplus food is available, but we have too few drivers to transport the food to local non-profits which feed
the hungry. Our volunteers pick up excess perishable and prepared food from participating Donors (restaurants, corporate cafeterias, etc.), and then deliver the food directly to our Recipients (shelters, day centers for the elderly, etc.).
Shifts normally take less than 90 minutes and can work around your schedule. Come join our team of volunteers! Are you interested? Please email Saint Mary’s parishioner Molly Rhine at [email protected] or call Molly at (408) 396-8705.

May CrowningWhat a nice way to begin this new month with the
crowning of Mary! Our students led the prayer as each class placed flowers for Mary into baskets. Mary was crowned
by our Student Body President.
St. Mary School Faculty Day of ServiceOur Faculty had an opportunity to connect on an even
deeper level with each other and the community. We started at Casa de Clara, a home that offers hospitality to women and children experiencing homelessness; additionally, they provide showers, and distribute groceries to needy families in their neighborhood. Following lunch, the group attended noon Mass at the Cathedral and toured the Office of Social Ministry, where through a variety of efforts, homeless and other vulnerable residents of San Jose are served.
