In ti mes of uncertainty, one thing is sure: pressure will conti nue (or even increase) on the quality of the services provided by IT. No surprise here: your company will need to compete in a fi erce environment, and customers will get lured by a myriad of competi ti ve off erings. It is not a good ti me to miss SLAs, have

fi nancial losses that could have been prevented by monitoring a security policy, or get fi ned for a major compliance breach.

Some IT professionals are worried about this new challenge. What about you?

Leadership in quality and securityFirst Data Ibérica was one of the first Spanish

companies to get the security certification PCI-DSS

(Payment Card Industry - Data Security Standard)

and one of their main goals when they acquired

the Tango/04 solution was to implement controls

that allowed demonstrating the compliance of this

intense regulation.

The PCI Standards were developed by the main

credit card companies (Visa, MasterCard, American

Express, JCB, Discovery and Diners), with the

objective of guaranteeing data security when using

First Data Ibérica (FDI) is the leading card-payment management company for the gas stati on, kiosk and newsagent sector. Their soluti ons integrate the whole value chain: terminal, sales points, emission, processing, authorizati on and back offi ce services. FDI has three offi ces in Spain and Portugal.

The leading company in payment transactions processing centralizes its security control of web devices and multi ple platf orms with Tango/04’s VISUAL Message Center monitoring soluti on.

this payment method. It consists of several

requirements that have the purpose of assuring

that sensitive information is stored, processed and

transmitted in an completely secure manner. In

order to help First Data Ibérica in this task, VISUAL

Message Center monitors the security of web

devices and multiple platforms (Oracle, iSeries and

Solaris).

The goal of the projectPCI Security Standards consist of more than 250

technical and operational requirements stated

by the PCI Security Standards Council to protect

cardholders. These requirements must be complied

by every entity that stores, process or transmits

credit card information. First Data Ibérica acquired

Tango/04 solutions to centralize control and

specifically to comply with the 10th PCI requirement:

“Track and monitor all access to network resources

and cardholder data”.

The answer to their needsVISUAL Message Center, the logical security monitoring

soluti on by Tango/04, helps First Data Ibérica to:

Control informati on systems through real-ti me •

monitoring of the operati ng system’s auditi ng

events (Solaris, IBM i5 systems), data bases

(Oracle, iSeries DB2) and web devices.

Distinguish different levels of criticality of •

the identified security incidents through a

centralized, versatile tool. These auditing

functions provide some of the necessary

internal controls to comply with PCI and other

similar requirements, and all events are stored

for easy report generation.

VISUAL Message Center’s SmartConsole allows

access to all the information generated by

monitoring agents for every platform through real-

time reading of the data bases where the events

are stored. The console, based on the alarms and

predefined actions that it has configured, sends

alerts and executes predefined actions

according to the criticality of the messages.

The result of a successful implementati onIn a leading payment transacti on company like First

Data Ibérica, security is criti cal. In additi on to assisti ng

with PCI compliance, Tango/04’s soluti ons proved

to be even more useful by implementi ng additi onal

controls.

For example, thanks to VISUAL Message Center, the

IT Department obtains daily informati on in real-ti me

of any security incident that occurs in any of their

platforms. In additi on, platf orm administrators and

the IT Security Manager are noti fi ed immediately thus

enabling them to take the necessary measures to

miti gate their risk.

In the future, First Data Ibérica is planning to opti mize

the use of Tango/04 for its operati onal monitoring by

taking advantage of their initi al investment and the

ability of the soluti on to monitor both security and

operati onal events thanks to the amount of agents

included in the soluti on (pings, SNMP, Data Adapter,

Applicati ons Agent, etc.).

VISUAL Message Center, the logical security monitoring soluti on of Tango/04, allows First Data Ibérica to control their informati on systems through real-ti me monitoring of the auditi ng events in a great variety of:

Operati ng systems (Solaris, IBM i5 systems)• Data bases (Oracle, iSeries DB2) • Web devices•

“Thanks to VISUAL Message Center, the IT Department gets daily

informati on in real ti me of any security incident that occurs in the

company.”

Tango/04’s New Professional ServicesCarlos Pédéfl ous, Lati n America Operati ons Manager, explains Tango/04’s new approach to increasingly criti cal and necessary monitoring

Some years ago, when we decided that monitoring

would be the focus of our business, you didn’t need

to be a fortune teller to realize that technology would

conti nue to be a criti cal issue for the success and

survival of modern companies.

In that ti me, monitoring wasn’t something new. The

most well known soft ware manufacturers had had

soluti ons oriented mainly to technical control for

years. They were integrated in their big frameworks

and included diff erent tools to accomplish “total

automati c control” of the enti re infrastructure. A

promise which was as commendable as it was litt le

analyzed.

The truth is, most of these “soluti ons” were too

complex. The monitoring approach consisti ng

of controlling every technical component and

automati ng every administrati ve acti vity turned out

to be ineff ecti ve.

In the majority of cases, aft er long and expensive

implementati ons, the real value obtained was

too restricted. There is no need to clarify that this

led to many frustrati ons. As a matt er of fact, I sti ll

remember the impact an Info Week arti cle had on

me which, aft er a study, affi rmed that around 80% of

these kinds of projects with mega-frameworks failed.

That’s crazy!

Although this scenario didn’t seem very appealing,

it was clear to us that monitoring needs were

inevitable and not only would big companies depend

on technology more and more, but this would also

turn into a criti cal instrument for companies of

every size, which would require real-ti me control of

their management. Considering this, we decided to

enter the market, keeping in mind that we needed

to do things diff erently in order to be successful. At

that moment, we thought of three criti cal factors for

success:

The soft ware had to be as simple as possible to 1.

use.

We would propose focused projects that would 2.

help our clients achieve rapid results and clear

benefi ts.

We would create an agile Professional Services 3.

area that would be focused on successfully

implementi ng each project, while basing our

approach in knowledge transfer to the client.

This strategy worked perfectly and it was the pillar of

hundreds of successful implementati ons that we have

performed in diff erent sized companies all around the

world.

As everything has to evolve, this successful approach

had to evolve as well. Maybe some of you wonder

what the problem is? I’ll try to explain:

The soft ware is easy to use, but the approach that 1.

companies look for is no longer technical or basic:

they need help controlling applicati ons, services

and processes that are increasingly complex,

criti cal and heterogeneous. Furthermore, audits

and requirements are increasing and more

demanding every day.

Short projects that provide maximum benefi ts are 2.

sti ll fundamental, but companies need to extend

their monitoring conti nuously in order to include

diff erent areas and users; in other words, they

require permanent help from their monitoring

soluti ons to assure the company’s conti nuity.

Page 7: T04 monitor3-en

7

Tango/04 Monitor - Latest news in System Management and Security for the CEO, CIO and CISO - No. 3

Knowledge transfer is sti ll important; however, 3.

there are increasing demands and pressures on

IT professionals, who generate over-occupati on

in almost every IT area in the world. Therefore, it

becomes very diffi cult to be experts in every tool

and applicati on they must handle, which are also

more and more numerous every day.

In order to do this analysis, we conducted a global

research in countries where we have branches, and

in those where we are represented by distributors;

we talked to clients and comprehensively studied the

latest technology trends. We went over the results

more than once, because it is not easy to redefi ne a

strategy that has been successful for years.

However, what was happening was logical: technology

exceeded all expectati ons and transformed the

business world into an ultra competi ti ve market,

where he who doesn’t react in ti me is left out of the

game. As a consequence, monitoring and real-ti me

control are becoming a fundamental part of every

company. All of this required a change in strategy.

We will conti nue to put all our energy and eff orts into

making our soft ware easy-to-use, but we think that

both our clients and our company must accept that if

what we control is complex, varied, strategic, and is

meant to grow and change conti nuously, we will have

to deepen the approach and invest to make it possible.

Just as we used to transfer the knowledge and leave

the soluti on’s maintenance and growth in your hands,

we believe that these days most of the people who

trusted us need a diff erent, deeper, support. This is

the reason why Tango/04, along with its partners,

is creati ng an answer to this new need, whether

recurrent support or help managing the soluti on is

required.

Our main goal is to have every customer’s soluti on

updated and growing permanently, accompanying

their company’s growth.

The main part of this change is based on a criti cal

factor, or a key questi on that we should answer,

periodically, together: What is the company’s capacity

for maintaining its monitoring soluti on and making it

grow, and what is needed to improve it?

We propose making this analysis together, in a

regular and programmed way, so that we both make

sure –you and us- that today’s critical solutions’

process of growth advances on the path of continual

improvement.

Based on this, we will evaluate how to take advantage

of our new services off er, which includes:

projects with a diff erent implementati on •

methodology, much more oriented in assuring

control for clients

extended support services for everyone who •

needs to have advanced consultati ons, in person

or remotely

outsourcing services when the management of •

certain monitoring tasks must be delegated

many other customized opti ons adapted to each •

customer’s needs

To summarize, the goal is the same, but adapted to

each company’s reality and the current dynamics.

Tango/04 Computi ng Group celebrated its annual

User’s Meeti ng for the second ti me, both in Europe

and Lati n America. The events were held on June 12th

in Dolce Hotels & Resorts in Sitges, Barcelona, Spain,

and July 3rd in the Luxury Hotel Sofi tel La Reserva

Cardales, Buenos Aires, Argenti na.

Both events were att ended by more than 150 of

the leading companies of the world. Some of them

were: Nike, MAPFRE, Bacardi, BBVA, ING, SEUR

Geopost, Random House Mondadori, Miele, Luxxoti ca

(RayBan), Riu Hotels, Zurich Insurance, Arcor, Banco

Itaú, Manpower, Danone, and Tenaris among others.

Tango/04 Monitoring Symposium is an event held

with the goal of informing Technology, Security and

Systems Managers of the latest news about corporate

monitoring. This ti me one of the main topics was the

existence of new IT demands, and its unquesti onable

relati onship with business goals. Regarding this, the

hosts’ purpose was to prove that in a challenging

economic environment such as the current one, a

monitoring soluti on is key to answering increasing

opti mizati on and control needs, and allows companies

to provide a quality service at the same ti me. The

key, as it was explained by Raul Cristi an Aguirre, CEO

and founder of Tango/04, is to have a solid vision of

performance and risk indicators (KPIs and KRIs) as

well as infrastructure impact indicators and their

relati onship with each and every one of the company’s

criti cal processes.

Customers share their successesBoth in Barcelona and Buenos Aires, the main hits of

the Symposium were the success cases delivered by

Tango/04’s own customers.

In Europe, Nike, through its Global

Logisti cs IT Technology Manager,

described the use of Tango/04’s soluti on

for supervising the logisti cs of Nike’s

main European warehouse in Belgium

where they use VISUAL Message Center

to monitor criti cal processes and applicati ons, as

well as business processes that are supported by the

hardware and soft ware infrastructure.

On the other hand, MAPFRE Inversión’s

General Manager depicted what it was

like to implement Tango/04’s “1-2-3”

monitoring strategy (Technology-

Security-Business) in his company, where they use

the monitoring soluti on to control fund assessment

and the performance of their Web Services, as well

as other criti cal business, security, and infrastructure

processes.

MAPFRE also presented its successful case in

Argentina, where the professionals from Information

Projects and IT narrated how they monitor their

critical technology and information security. They

also explained how they use Dashboards to know

the number of transactions per hour, measure

SLAs and different reports, and control their Web

Services and the amount of time it takes to respond

to online cost estimate requests.

The other success case presented

in Buenos Aires was delivered by

representati ves from Technology and

Informati on Security from Banco Itaú,

who described the way they monitor

the enti ty’s Security and Business, how they control

diff erent business services, and how they know their

branch and ATM network’s availability in real-

ti me. To conclude their presentati on,

they did a live demonstrati on of

the use of our soluti ons.

New professional services and future launchingsIn both meeti ngs Tango/04 presented its new

professional services approach, demonstrati ng its

interest in evolving and adapti ng to new demands

from companies and the current dynamics (See

Professional Services arti cle on page 6).

The goal is to help customers get the most out of their

investment and to facilitate the extension of real-ti me

control and conti nual improvement in the areas of

technology, informati on security, and every criti cal

business acti vity.

Raul Cristi an Aguirre, CEO and founder of Tango/04,

in charge of the closing of each event, commented on

the latest news about products and some interesti ng

applicati ons of the soluti on with current technology,

giving examples of innovati ve projects –such as

highway control, where they cover operati onal

and business process needs that are

beyond the IT Department.

“Organizati ons that lack global visibility of their business services

will fi nd competi ng harder and harder”.

Raul Aguirre presented the Roadmap and commented on the latest news about products, both in Barcelona and Buenos Aires

MGF LogistiqueAutomati on of real-ti me control for its technological infrastructure, criti cal applicati ons and business processes

MGF Logisti que is a French provider of logisti cal soluti ons to many diff erent types of clients. It’s a child corporati on of the G7 Enterprise group, a specialist in providing soluti ons for data fl ux management that has an approximate annual turnover of 600 million dollars.

For Quality in ServiceMGF is a company heavily committ ed to providing the

best quality in logisti cs, and all of their contracts with

its customers are based on Service Level Objecti ves.

In order to achieve those objecti ves Philipe Bézamat,

Systems and Informati on Director at MGF, decided to

fully implement ITIL V3’s best practi ces and needed

a monitoring soluti on capable of ensuring full

compliance. The end goal for Bézamat was clear: “we

wanted to transmit trust, simplicity and transparency

to our internal and external customers”.

According to Bézamat, Tango/04’s soluti ons have

provided the opportunity to place MGF at the heart of

the French logisti cal sector. “From 1997 we have been

working hard to become a dynamic leader in France and

we slowly but surely achieved this objecti ve by winning

big clients like Nestlé Waters, La Redoute and Pepsico”.

IT at the heart of the Trade

“The datafl ow between MGF and its customers

surpasses 100.000 command lines every day and on

a busy day, many lines more. In order to make that

fl ow as smooth as possible, refi ned processes and

Page 11: T04 monitor3-en

“Traditi onal monitoring soluti ons were too expensive, too complex

and not at all fl exible”

“It is a soluti on compati ble with ITIL V3 that can be adapted to any

CIO’s needs”

integrated monitoring play a big role,” says

Bézamat. MGF’s IT Team is at the heart of the trade

and is made up of 9 members in Paris to whom Project

Leaders across France report their acti viti es.

The Logisti c ProblemIn the logisti cal sector the pivotal element has always

been the management of data, whether that data

was writt en on paper like in the old days, or in binary

languages like nowadays: if the informati on is lost,

service can not be provided. This criti calness together

with the growing complexity of MGF’s IT infrastructure

and lack of human resources, made Bézamat decide

to look for a monitoring soluti on capable of alleviati ng

MGF’s problems immediately and ensuring the quality

of its service to clients.

The IT team started by installing home-grown alarms to

proacti vely report on any IT incident. Bézamat wanted

to reinforce these internal developments by backing

them up with a state-of-the art monitoring soluti on to

control work processes. This soluti on had to be able to

centralize the management of events in a multi platf orm

environment, provide graphic modeling capabiliti es to

visualize data fl ows in real-ti me, and proacti vely report

on the status of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and

Service Level Agreements (SLAs).

Large framework Monitoring Soluti ons were out of the

questi on. “These soluti ons did not provide anything

I was looking for in a monitoring soluti on. They were

too expensive, too complex and not at all fl exible.

My selecti on criteria were clear from the get-go: the

perfect soluti on had to be easy-to-use, fl exible, intuiti ve

and conti nuously evolving in order to allow us to work

completely autonomously. And of course, it had to be

fi nancially att racti ve.”

The soluti onMGF Logisti que chose Tango/04’s VISUAL Message

Center, Tango/04’s multi platf orm monitoring

soluti on that allows full control over

infrastructures and applicati ons

and centralizes the informati on

from work processes and

Service Level Agreements (SLA) in one

single console.

Every criti cal component (servers, databases,

applicati ons, etc.) is easily modeled in a centralized

graphic console, capable of correlati ng thousands of

events per second. Litt le icons in these Business Views

report on the status of every monitored element. This

way, the business impact of any of these elements can

be known, allowing management of IT and processes in

real-ti me with just a glimpse.

This Business Services Management methodology

allowed Bézamat to model all the criti cal processes

and data fl ows for each one of MGF’s clients. Having a

complete view per client allows the IT team to quickly

identi fy where a potenti al incident is taking place,

establish prioriti es in dealing with those incidents and

thereby avoid problems. In conclusion, this allowed

MGF to increase the service quality for end-users.

Tango/04’s solution allows the gathering of different

business processes and its components (with drill-

down analysis functionality) in dashboards that

are accessible via the Web, making its access and

control easier. This has proven especially

handy for MGF’s IT team as it

allowed them to model work

processes while working on

the customer’s systems.

Tango/04’s soluti on allows gathering diff erent business processes and its components in one Business View that is accessible via the Web, and makes controls easier.

Page 12: T04 monitor3-en

12

“The implementati on was fast and simple”

The resulti ng Enterprise Views are easy to

understand, even if you have no prior IT engineering

training. Furthermore, they are a perfect tool for

facilitati ng the fl ow of informati on between the IT

department and other MGF departments, improving

internal communicati ons and the internal image of

the IT department.

Tango/04’s Monitoring Soluti on can be easily

programmed to automati cally deal with recurring IT

incidents and can inform IT managers -via email or

text messages- when incidents have been solved.

The soluti on’s capability to deal with even more

complex incidents is conti nuously being expanded.

Rapid implementati on and autonomy Implementi ng Tango/04 in MGF’s systems has

been fast and simple. Bézamat confi rms this, and

adds that it lived up to all the expectati ons he had:

“Aft er an extensive study of our needs carried out

by Tango/04 consultants and us, we were given a

short training using monitoring examples that had

been specifi cally tailored to MGF. We jointly modeled

one of our criti cal work processes and therefore

we immediately understood how to do it ourselves.

Besides, we were given all the necessary informati on

in order to work autonomously from day one. From

that moment on, we conti nue to implement Tango/04

in more and more areas and we made it evolve

into the best-possible monitoring soluti on for us.”

Aligning Business & IT Tango/04 has contributed to aligning MGF’s IT

department and its business needs. Its capability

to translate complex informati on into Business and

Enterprise Views that are easy to understand and to

manipulate increased the producti vity of MGF’s IT

department virtually overnight. In additi on, the mean

ti me to recognize which IT incident is taking place

where and what its impact on the overall business is,

has been reduced to an absolute minimum.

“What I like about Tango/04 is the fl exibility it off ers

you to manage incidents proacti vely and according to

their impact on the business, besides the visibility it

provides for processes and applicati ons, and its

multi platf orm usability, that eliminates the necessity

to buy more than one soluti on for your monitoring

needs”, Bézamat explains, insisti ng that he has found

a tool that is perfectly adaptable to the needs of any

modern CIO, because it is very easy to report to the

executi ve board of MGF on complex data fl ows or work

processes, thanks to its Enterprise Views. “Tango/04’s

monitoring soluti on has become the corner stone of

our conti nual eff ort to improve our services.”

“What I like about Tango/04 is the

fl exibility it off ers you to manage

incidents proacti vely and according

to their impact on the business,

along with the visibility it provides

for processes and applicati ons and

its multi platf orm usability, that

eliminates the necessity to buy

more than one soluti on for your

monitoring needs.”

Reports is easier to use and scales much bett er than most of the comparable products. From now on, every Tango/04 product will use Reports for report generati on of all kinds.

Absolutely integrated with the rest of the soluti on, Dashboards allows real-ti me visualizati on and control of all the relevant informati on of the company. From current or historic infrastructure data, to Key Performance and Risk Indicators (KPIs and KRIs), or complete business processes, Dashboards simplifi es the creati on and access to all relevant data aff ecti ng the company through a very att racti ve web interface. Dashboards are completely customizable, navigable with no level limitati on, have an advanced license system to protect data according to each user’s role, and they rely on the Service Model and the analyti c power of the monitoring soluti on, providing a predicti ve engine that allows anti cipati on of future problems: the Forecasti ng Engine.

Designed to support a huge number of components and millions of daily events, SmartConsole 7.5 is the new generation of the best business, security and technology services monitoring console.

In this new version, the speed of each process has increased radically, achieving improvements of up to a hundred to one in certain areas, thanks to a new proprietary technology for events correlation in complex service models for each instance. Besides, the use of less memory for the model implies more available resources for event storage.

Acti ons like creati ng, moving, deleti ng, renaming, etc. in the business view model are almost instantaneous even if the model has hundreds of thousands of components. For most of the operati ons, the processing ti me is not infl uenced by the number of elements, so the fl ow is conti nuous even when dealing with big models. As a consequence, operati ons reach a speed up to 4000% ti mes faster than the previous version of the SmartConsole. And, among other improvements, corporate and processes views have been renewed with a library of more than 400 sets of high-defi niti on icons that include support for people with color blindness. In additi on to these enhancements, migrati on from the previous version is automati c.
