STARTING INFUSION (an example)
MONITORING WHILST INFUSING
Prepare BD Plastipak syringe with prescribed medication and at least 2mls of water unless otherwise prescribed. Complete medication label and place on syringe barrel (NOT GIVING SET LINE). Attach CareFusion & Saf-T-Intima system and manually prime the complete giving set.
Press and hold ON / OFF button to start pump, ensure Barrel Clamp down & no syringe in place(First 3 screens display during actuator movement)
Insert the Duracell brand 9 volt (6LR61) battery (no other type of battery must be used) at the back of the McKinley T34 syringe pump. When inserting, ensure that the battery has adequate connection with the
battery housing.
When actuator has stopped:

Pump details display.
The LCD display will show ‘PRE-LOADING’ and the actuator will move (barrel clamp down and no syringe in place) deleting the previous programme.
Check battery press ‘INFO’ key once. Select battery level, press ‘YES’. Battery level appears on the screen.In Hospital discard battery if less than 10%. In Community discard battery at 40% or below.Hold prepared syringe above the device to gauge correct position for syringe loading (ensure barrel clamp is down).
Press and Hold the FF key to eliminate/reduce mechanical slack (visible spaces at the syringe collar & plunger) ensures a faster start up time. (Available once only, in the startup sequence).
IF YOU PRESS ‘YES’ the duration ofdelivery will decrease to account for the purge volume used.
Press and Hold Info key to lock key pad. Repeat to unlock.Place in compulsory lock box, close lid and lock.

Insert giving set needle at 45° angle subcutaneously, cover with transparent dressing. Press ‘YES’ to start the infusion when ready to do so.
Pump default settings display.
If incorrect syringe size / brand displays, use keys to scroll for the one required.
ENSURE THE LINE IS DISCONNECTD FROM THE PATIENT. PRESS ‘YES’ TO CONFIRM
Load prepared syringe, (the screen graphic flashes until the syringe is detected in all 3 points). The next screen then displays the syringe brand.
BEFORE pressing YES to confirm.PRESS FF TO ACTIVATE THE PURGE FACILITY.
Press FF or BACK key to move actuator to correct position for loading syringe.

With no infusion running: Press the INFO key.Options for viewing are:Event log / Change set-up / Check Battery status / Exit menu.Scroll menu using arrow key and press “YES” to view the option selected.
The pump calculates the mls/hr rate using the syringe volume and infusion duration. THE RATE IS THEN FIXED OVER 24 HOURS.Automatic movement of the actuator on powering up of the device (with no syringe in situ) will delete any previous programme in the device memory.
When an alert is activated:1. The infusion continues.2. Three beeps are heard approximately every 3-4 minutes3. A screen message alternates with the infusion running screenAlert activates approximately 15 minutes prior to infusion end or 15 minutes prior to end of battery life
When an alarm is activated:1. The infusion stops.2. The LED indicator turns red.3. An audible alarm activates (this will continue until either the YES key is pressed
to mute alarm or the problem is rectified).4. A screen message appears on the display indicating the cause.
Document remaining volume. Press and hold INFO key to unlock key pad.
Press NO / STOP button. Press and hold ON / OFF button and then remove the
Duracell brand 9 volt (6LR61) battery.

Something has occurred which has interrupted the current programme (e.g. syringe displaced / power failure) so the device is prompting the user to their intention.

Pump has been left in STOP mode (on hold) for 2 minutes.
Alert:Battery is almost depleted.

Pressing “YES”: Will continue current, interrupted infusion.Check / confirm infusion summary screens and press YES to resume the current infusion.
Pressing “NO”: Will programme a new infusion. The pump will calculate the volume of the syringe over 24 hours and start a new programme.
