Tourism being a major industry in the country calls for a workforce that is well trained in more ways than one, and certainly perceptions in this area have changed, giving the industry the recognition it deserves. But one thing surely has not changed and is not likely to: the worker must be prepared for a challenging field where long hours and unpredictable days are a common thing. For those with the right attitude, one place for training is Sunway College's School of Hospitality and Tourism Management which can lay claim to being a leader in the field. A conducive learning environment is among the most important things the student should look out for and the school has this - located in the vicinity of major hotels, tourism companies and tourist attractions like Sunway Lagoon Resort Hotel and Sunway Lagoon Theme Park. The student benefits from a large university campus environment within a city complete with sports facilities, on-campus hostel accommodation, spacious parking, surau, a well -stScked bookshop, con- venience store, launderette and 24-hour secu- rity service. There's also the degree in hotel and restaurant management offered in collabo- ration with Oxford Brookes University The degree is designed to develop effective and innovative managers with vocational and managerial skills. The university has a history of academic achievements dating back to its origins as a college of art in 1865. Since achieving uni- versity status in 1992, it has seen The Times Good University Guide ranking it top new university in Britain for four consecutive years from 1996. The university has strong links with the hotel, restaurant and catering professions, key elements at the degree level. The duration of the course is four semes- ters and can be completed within 16 months. Students who have completed the school's diploma programme may earn the degree within four academic semesters. Locally the school gains from it links with establishments that help with the stu- dent's practical training. Students are required to undergo 15 weeks (Certificate) or 20 weeks (Diploma) of Supervised Work Experience in any of the Sunway Group's .world class hotels, restaurants or other five- star hospitality establishments such as Mandarin Oriental, The Ritz-Carlton, The Regent, Shangri-La Hotel, and Renaissance Hotel. Students receive a variety of practical skills to fulfil industry requirements. Furthermore, supervised work experience provides a practical basis for understand- ing subjects to be studied in the advanced stage of the course.
