The Four-Way Test“Of the things we think, say or do:

1. Is it the TRUTH?

2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?

3. Will it build GOODWILL and

BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?

4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?”

When French President Francois Hollande unveiled a plan in November for a business tax credit and higher sales taxes as a way to revive the economy, he was implementing an idea championed by economist Gita Gopinath. Gopinath, 41, a professor at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, has pushed for tax intervention as a way forward for euro-area countries that cannot devalue their exchange rates. “Gita is already a major star, at the top of h e r c o h o r t i n i n t e r n a t i o n a l macroeconomics and still rapidly growing as a scholar,” senior Harvard economist Kenneth

From the Editor's PenDear Rotarians,

One cannot forget this year's TZP

in a hurry. Rarely see so many

enthusiastic children in one place.

It is a truly unique event. Once

every year, these kids get an

opportunity to mingle with the

outside world. Still there was no stopping them

from putting their best foot forward. And boy,

were they enjoying it! A very special day indeed!

Heartfelt thanks to all those who made it

possible…- Arun B.R., [email protected], 98452 72343

Rogoff said “Her empirical work on price rigidities is simply stunning and has had everyone going back to the drawing boards. Her theoretical work on international debt and default defines the state of the art in the field,” he said, calling her strategies for the euro zone to achieve internal devaluations “very influential.”

Gopinath has less praise for policy makers in her country of birth. India’s current-account deficit, at 5.4 percent of gross domestic product, is “worrying,” Gopinath said, because it’s driven by lower savings rates…Gopinath’s path to becoming an economist and the first Indian woman to receive tenure at Harvard began almost by chance in the South Indian city of Mysore where she grew up. Like many Indian high-school students, she sought her parents’ advice on what to study at university, and like many Indian parents of the time, they wanted her to land a respectable job as a government official in the Indian Administrative Services…

(Excerpts from an article dt 7th Feb in Bloomberg, a top financial newspaper of the US, which was next day carried by EconomicTimes)

Rtn. T.V. Gopinath sir, you must be a proud father indeed! Notwithstanding the fact that your daughter fortunately didn’t take up your advice to go for the IAS! J We hope the Indian Government takes her advice like the French…What can we expect next? A Nobel Prize in Economics? Why not?
