Seneca High School opened its doorsonly 11 years ago, but in that short amountof time, the schools girls cross-countryprogram has already established a tradi-tion of success.

The Golden Eagles won their fifth SouthJersey Group III sectional title on Satur-day, Nov. 8 with a total time of 1:39:17.16, de-feating Ocean City and Moorestown bymore than a minute. Senecas win contin-ues a recent run of dominance, marking

the teams fifth sectional crown in the lasteight years.

This years title was a result of theteams consistency. Though Seneca did nothave any top five finishers, the team com-pleted the 5,000-meter run with an average

time of 19:51.44. Freshman Sydny Warner, junior Joey Webb, freshman Carley Tool, junior Lindsay Hoffman and senior Kris-ten Horn finished within 53 seconds of oneanother, all placing between sixth and 17th.

Sophomore Kayla Martin and seniorLauren Tocci gave Seneca all seven run-ners in the top 28, Martin in 21st, Tocci in28th.

Since the inception of the girls crosscountry sectionals in 1976, only one school,Ocean City with eight, has won moreSouth Jersey Group III titles than Seneca an amazing stat considering Seneca didnt

exist until 2003 and hadnt won a title be-fore 2007.

The Seneca girls easily outpaced the RedRaiders of Ocean City winning by a scoreof 51-78.

Senecas success is not only noticeable

in Group III but across the state. Senecasfive sectional titles are 10th-most amongschools in all groups. Since the programsinception, the Golden Eagles have neverfinished worse than fifth as a team even intheir inaugural season.

In 2003, the first year the school wasopen, the team was limited to just fresh-men and sophomores, Seneca only hadthree varsity runners. But since then it hasqualified for states with a top five finishevery year. And it has been first or secondseven of the last eight years.

Seneca wins fifth sectional title in eight yearsGirls cross country defeats Ocean City, Moorestown by more than a minute

Sorry to say this so early, while 60-

degree days were here just a few

days ago, but, alas, the holiday

    season has arrived.

The good news is that means many

    good-hearted people and organizations

will be gathering food, clothing, toys,

money and other items for those less

    fortunate.

At The Sun, we want to help make

your event or drive as successful as

possible. But to do that, we need your

    help.

Many retailers count on Black Fri-

day to help put their business in the

black for the year. If holiday sales are

strong, they have a good overall year. Ifsales are soft, they struggle to get by.

The same theory can hold true for

nonprofits and other groups that de-

pend on the publics generosity duringthe holiday season to see them through

the rest of the year. People, naturally,

are more giving during this time of the

year. So, in the coming weeks, youll

see bell-ringers, donation drives and a

lot of other efforts to help those in

    need.

We salute everyone who holds a

drive to help those in need. But we also

want to help make those efforts as

    grand and successful as possible.

To do that, we need to know about

your event as soon as possible (at least

two weeks is best). We need to know

what types of items you are trying to

collect, who will benefit from the drive,

and, most importantly, how people can

    get involved to help you.

Email is the best way to send us this

information, and youll find our news

    email address to the right.

Then, after we get your information,

well take it from there. Well get it into

the paper and let everyone in town

know what it is you are trying to ac-

complish and how they can be a part of

    it.

    Many families are still struggling

with the economy. There always arepeople in need. Let us help you to help

them. Send us your event information

and lets make this a big donation year.

    in our opinion

Holiday helpersIts the season to helpothers; let us know about your fundraiser or drive

    The need is there

The need for donations this holiday periodis strong. Tell us about your fundraisingeffort or donation drive, and well telleveryone else.

    Holiday Shopping

The school store at Seneca willbe open from noon until 2 p.m. onSaturday, Dec. 6, for holiday shop-ping. Cash or checks only, nodebit or credit cards accepted.

    Tree LightingTabernacle Township has been

around for a long time 113 yearsin fact so it is tough for there tobe any new firsts. But this holiday

season will bring a first for thetownship, as the Tabernacle His-torical Society, TabernacleWomans Association and Taber-nacle PTA will host an inauguraltree lighting event at town hall onFriday, Dec. 5 at 7 p.m.

Complete with hot cocoa, baked goods, crafts for kids andmembers of the Seneca HighSchool marching band, colorguard and chamber singers per-forming, the event has been onthe minds of community organi-

zations for a few years now.Its been in the works for

awhile now. All three groups allhad ideas at different times andthe historical society andwomans association were work-ing on details over the summer sowe were excited all three groupcould come together and makethis event happen for the entirecommunity, PTA President JennQuartarone said.

It is free for all to attend andenjoy some treats, holiday musicand maybe a visit from Mr. Claushimself.
