Pastoral Reflection500th Anniversary of the Protestant Reformation

Dear Friends,

By now, I trust that you are well aware that this is the 500th anniversary of the

Protestant Reformation. Martin Luther, a monk in Wittenberg, Germany, touched

off a firestorm of reformation when he nailed his 95 Theses to the door of the

Wittenberg Cathedral on October 31, 1517. Today, he would have posted a blog

and likely gotten the same response. The time was right, and ripe, for reform in

the church.

What was the driving force behind this radical reformation? There are many

possible answers, but the one undeniable fact is the Word of God was made

available to all people. Luther translated the Bible from Latin into German, making

Scripture available to the common man and woman. Through the work of the

Holy Spirit, God used the Word of God to reform and transform His people, and I

believe the same is true still today.

Of course, Luther had his part to play, as did many others in the subsequent

decades, the likes of John Calvin and John Knox, but really it was the Word

of God at work in people’s hearts that made the changes. In a sermon Luther

preached in 1522, he reflected on his role in the Reformation, and he said this

about the importance of Scripture. “In short, I will preach it, teach it, write it, but

I will constrain no one by force, for faith must come freely without compulsion.

Take myself as an example. I opposed indulgences and all the papists, but never

with force. I simply taught, preached and wrote God’s Word; otherwise I did

nothing." (I have also heard he said, “And while I slept, or drank my little glass of

Wittenberg beer”)… the Word did everything…I did nothing; I let the Word do its

work.”

That was true in the 16th century and it is true still today. There is power in the

Word of God, power that is available to you and me; it is the power to change

lives; it is the of the Gospel sufficient for our salvation.

Curiously, throughout Church history, God does a radical work of reformation in

His Church about every 500 years. Perhaps, God is doing a work of reformation

in His Church today, in us at Tab, in you and in me. I pray so, and I trust that any

work He does will be grounded in the truth and power of His Word.

Join me as we pray that God will reform His Church, beginning with me.

WEDNESDAYS @TAB - CALVIN CLASS We know you’ve heard of John Calvin, but have you ever wondered who he was and why he keeps getting men-tioned in sermons? Join Alan McKenzie and Pastor John Gable on four consecutive Wednesday evenings in Octo-ber for a “Class on Calvin.” A light meal will be served from 6:00p-6:30p in the Dining Room, followed by teaching and discussion, ending before 8:00p. As we reflect on this im-portant milestone in church history we hope you will join us as we discuss the impact and influence of John Calvin, one of the great thinkers of the Protestant Reformation.

GUEST PREACHER & CHOIR - SUNDAY, OCTOBER 8On Sunday, October 8, we will be honored to welcome Dr. Lake Lambert, president of Hanover College, as our guest preacher during all three services of worship. At the 11:00a service he will be joined by the Hanover College choir under the direction of Madlen Batchvarova. Dr. Lambert has been president of Hanover since 2015. He degrees from Emory University, Chandler School of Theology and a PhD in Social Ethics from Princeton Theological Seminary. He is also ordained as a diaconal minister in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. Lake is married to Kelly and they have two children, Bailey and Zack. Please plan to join us in wor-ship as we welcome Lake to Tab.

PRETEEN LOCK-INAll Tab fifth and sixth graders are invited to our annual Fall Lock-In. This year’s lock-in will take place Friday, October 20, from 7:00p until 900a. We will have games, snacks, a movie with popcorn, an “indoor campfire,” and several rounds of the famous Hide and Seek in the Dark. There is no fee for this activity, and fifth or sixth grade friends are welcome. Bring a sleeping bag or bedroll, a snack to share, and jammies that can be worn in mixed company. OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILDChildren’s Ministries is partnering again with the Samaritan’s Purse organization for “Operation Christmas Child” this holiday season. Tab’s families are encouraged to participate by filling a shoe box with small toys, games, toiletries and small clothing items (hats, gloves, etc.) that will be sent to children in developing countries to share the celebration of

Christ’s birth. Anyone who would like to participate can pick up a box, the guidelines for filling the box and a label from McKee Hallway or Lower Level B on Sunday mornings or at the Front Office during the week beginning on October 15. The packages must be back at Tab by November 10 so we can take them to the central collection site for mailing overseas in mid-November. THE POWER OF AND POWER IN VOLUNTEERINGThe Power of and Power in Volunteering, a Spirit and Place Festival event, will take place in Tab’s Dining Room, Thursday, November 9, from 6:00p to 8:30p. Volunteering builds strong communities, addresses community concerns, enhances career opportunities, and even provides a sense of personal fulfillment. This is the power of volunteering. But who then is the giver and who is the receiver? With expert speakers, personal stories and a shared meal, we will explore the power dynamics in giver-receiver relationships. The event is free, but RSVPs are encouraged at spiritandplace.org.

POVERTY SIMULATIONThirty-seven million Americans live in poverty daily. Take just three hours to experience their daily routine during the Poverty Simulation to be held, Wednesday, November 15, from 6:00p to 9:00p in the Dining Room. This simulation will expose and sensitize participants to the realities faced by low income families. Discussion will follow this eye-open-ing experience. Dinner will be served during the simula-tion. Register your attendance by emailing Marie Wiese at [email protected], or Paula Means at [email protected].

CHRISTMAS WREATHS AND POPCORNTab’s Boy Scout Troop 72 will be selling Christmas wreaths October 13, October 19 and October 22. Stop by the table at the Parking Lot entrance to place your order. They will be available for pickup starting at 6:00p Friday, November 17, and 8:30a Saturday, November 18, in plenty of time to decorate before Thanksgiving.
