On behalf of the Illinois Athletic Directors Association I hope

that each of you was able to take some time to relax and enjoy the

holiday season. While this is certainly not the frigid Illinois winter

weather we are accustomed to seeing on the outside, winter

athletics around the state are certainly heating up on the inside.

Now that we are all back into the swing of things I do hope that

your winter season is going smoothly. Because this is a very busy

time of the year for all of us, I do want to remind and encourage

you to make certain that you take time for yourself and your family

every week. As our roles and responsibilities continue to increase

and change it is important that we maintain a stranglehold on the

precious time we spend with family and friends. I realize that even

a few hours spent with family and friends away from the job is

invaluable and essential to our success.

The NIAAA National Conference was held in Orlando in

December and once again Illinois was very well represented, with

more than 80 athletic directors in attendance. I would like to extend

a well-earned congratulations to Deborah Ofcky, CMAA, who

received the NIAAA Distinguished Service Award at the National

Conference banquet. We also saw many of the athletic directors

from Illinois presenting during each of the workshop sessions. It is

always heartwarming to see the athletic administrators from

Illinois taking leadership roles on the national level, while

representing our state. Also, a big thank you to Rich Piatchek and

Mike Morris for hosting another outstanding hospitality room at the

conference.

Briant Kelly, IADA President-Elect, has been working

tirelessly with all of the IADA Division Liaisons in their roles as the

slating committee for the election of the 2016-17 IADA Executive

Board members. The slate of officers will be presented to the

membership at the IADA State Conference. Once again, there are

several highly qualified nominees for the open positions. I am

grateful to see so many members volunteering to get involved in

our great organization.

The annual IADA State Conference will held again in East

Peoria at the Embassy Suites Hotel from April 30 – May 3, 2016.

Conference Co-Chairs Darren Howard and Eric Matthews, along

with their conference committee, have logged many hours of

preparation for this year’s conference. I am excited to report that

the plans for this year’s event are going very well, and the

conference committee is well on its way to providing the

membership with another outstanding conference. As always the

conference will offer the opportunity for members to choose from

a wide variety of LTI classes and an opportunity to review for and

take the CAA exam. The conference will also offer an increased

number of valuable mini-sessions and many opportunities to

collaborate with colleagues and to share ideas that work. If you

are interested in helping with the conference, please contact

Darren or Eric.

I really want to encourage everyone to attend our spring

conference this year as it provides a great opportunity to network

with new athletic directors and enjoy the company of old friends.

The conference provides a great opportunity to help you better

serve your student-athletes and coaches by sharing new ideas

and discussing issues and solutions that we all face in our

leadership role. Be on the lookout for information on the conference

and the golf outing registration at the IADA website,

www.illinoisada.org. Let’s set a new conference attendance record

this year in East Peoria!

I am honored and privileged to serve this great organization

as President. Please know that I am always available to you if

there is ever anything I can do to assist you. Please do not hesitate

to reach out to me via phone or email. The camaraderie with past

and current members of the IADA has been an invaluable asset to

me in my tenure as an athletic administrator. I look forward to

seeing you in East Peoria.

Sincerely,

John Woods, CAA

The winter athletic season is coming to an end and spring athletics are right around the corner. Again, I

appreciate your time and dedication as an athletic director at your school and as a member of the Illinois Athletic Directors Association.

This past December, we had over 80 Illinois athletic administrators attend the NIAAA National Conference held in Orlando. This was a great opportunity to learn more about our profession through the LTI courses, general sessions and mini-sessions. There was also time to engage in meaningful conversations with athletic administrators from Illinois and across the United States. There were also many Illinois athletic administrators that participated as LTI course presenters, mini-session presenters and mini-session moderators.

As the spring athletic season begins, we are also reminded that the IADA State Conference in Peoria is fast approaching. We encourage all of the athletic administrators to attend the IADA State Conference, as this is another great opportunity for professional

growth. There will be LTI courses, general sessions, mini-sessions and a vendor showcase. All of this information can be found on the IADA website - http://www.illinoisada.org/conferences/.

Congratulations to the following athletic administrators who achieved the status of certified athletic administrator (CAA) and certified master athletic administrator (CMAA) this past fall and winter:

Nate Flannery, CAA – DeerfieldRyan Green, CAA – Chatham Jr. HighBriant Kelly, CMAA – LibertyvilleBarry Burmeister, CMAA – McHenryJames Soldan, CMAA – Evergreen ParkWe will be offering the exam in Illinois two more times this year.

The two dates are Sunday, May 1, 2016, at 8:00 am at the IADA State Conference in Peoria and on Thursday, July 14, 2016, at 8:00 am at the IADA Summer Retreat in Bloomington.

PRESIDENT-ELECT'S MESSAGE

Dear Athletic Administrators,The Illinois Athletic Directors

Association has as one of our main goals to further the professional development of our members; to that

end, we had several of our IADA members present at the National Conference held in Orlando, Florida. The Illinois athletic directors were well represented, with Deb Ofcky (New Trier) receiving a national award, Matt Hensley (Mahomet-Seymour) serving on the NIAAA publication committee, John Catalano (Glenbrook North), Dan Jones (Hinsdale Central), Briant Kelly (Libertyville), Chris Livatino (Evanston), Becky Moran (H-F) and Tina Woolard (Grayslake North) as presenters and instructors at the NIAAA Conference.

We are planning for our 2016 Illinois Athletic Directors Association’s State conference to be held at Embassy Suites in East Peoria, Illinois, April 30 - May 3. Hopefully, during the IADA Conference, you will be able to recharge your batteries, learn new

concepts, renew old friendships, develop new friendships and be able to return to your communities with an even brighter outlook regarding the field of athletics. I know the conference committee will put together an exciting program with outstanding general session speakers, a myriad of mini-session topics, a host of NIAAA Leadership Training courses, an outstanding vendor show, and of course, a great banquet to honor and recognize our Athletic Directors of the Year, Friends of Athletics and our Hall of Fame inductees for 2016.

As always, if there is anything that we can do for you, please contact President John Woods (Champaign Central), Past-President Charlie Lockenour (Heyworth), President-Elect Briant Kelly (Libertyville) or myself, and we will be glad to assist you. I hope to see you at the 2016 IADA Conference!!!

I am both humbled and excited to join the IHSA staff in July as an assistant executive director. Many outstanding people have helped me get to this point in my career. My high school coaches and teachers helped me learn the basics of leadership, teamwork, sportsmanship and the importance of accomplishing goals as a group. Throughout my career in education, I have learned from numerous colleagues and athletic directors like you who understand the positive lessons students gain from participating in high school sports and activities.

At the IHSA, I will serve our member schools as the administrator for football, wrestling, and baseball. I will also be responsible for the officials department and the athletic directors advisory committee. As I have told many of you, I am eager to face the challenges that await all of us in the future, but the aspect of my new position I anticipate the most is the chance to continue relationships with athletic directors, coaches, principals and officials.

I am originally from Ursa, on the far western edge of Illinois; ten miles north of Quincy. I graduated from Mendon (Unity) High School and earned my education degree from Illinois College.

My first teaching and coaching position was in my home school district. I taught at Unity Middle School for ten years and was an assistant football and boys basketball coach at Unity High School for the first five years of my career. I then became the head football coach at Unity for five years. I was also the athletic director for two years and eventually earned my educational administration degree from Western Illinois University.

After ten years at Unity, my family and I moved to Lincoln where I have been the athletic director at Lincoln Community High School since 2005. In addition to my regular responsibilities as an athletic director, I have developed master schedules in a variety of sports for the Central State 8 Conference and have served on the IHSA legislative commission, the All-State Academic Team selection committee, and the basketball advisory committee. This is my second year as the IADA Treasurer. I earned the status of certified athletic administrator from the NIAAA in 2014. I have also been an IHSA basketball and baseball official for 20 years and enjoy all aspects of officiating.

Marsha and I have been married for 16 years, and we have three children. Adam and Emily are our 12-year-old twins. Andy is 11. All three kids participate in a variety of sports and activities. I look forward to watching them enjoy their experiences and learn important lessons over the next several years.

The Illinois Athletic Directors Association is a tremendous professional organization that has impacted my career in countless ways. I value the opportunities to learn from other athletic directors and to discuss the best practices for leading a high school athletic department. I am fortunate that my new role with the IHSA will allow me to stay connected with the IADA as we continue to generate new ideas and work together to offer quality experiences for our kids.

I wish your school continued success in all of your sports and activities!

Sincerely,Sam Knox, CAA

LTC 501 ATHLETIC ADMINISTRATION: PHILOSOPHY, LEADERSHIP ORGANIZATIONS AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

The flagship course of Leadership Training serves as an overview for interscholastic athletic administration. Mechanical system checklists for use in regular inspections and maintenance programming will be provided. In addition, considerations and issues related to construction and remodeling programs will be discussed.

LTC 626 ATHLETIC ADMINISTRATION: STuDENT-ATHLETES—EFFECTS OF ALCOHOL, CHEMICALS AND NuTRITION ON BODY AND PERFORMANCE

LTC 705 ATHLETIC ADMINISTRATION: COACH CENTERED EDuCATIONAL ATHLETICS — A CHARACTER-BASED COACH-TO-COACH MENTORING PROGRAM

Character-based coach-to-coach mentoring programs utilize the talents, strengths and qualities of the entire team of coaches to maximize the potential of the coaching staff. Mentoring is an attitude, a relationship and an investment which provides coaches the opportunity to support and nurture each other professionally, personally and ethically. This course will highlight mentoring models that demonstrate key behaviors to implement when establishing an effective coach mentoring program. It will also provide athletic administrators strategies and methods to develop and enhance successful coach to coach mentoring programs.

Basic management strategies include the use of emotional intelligence and transactional analysis considerations and methods. Specific protocols will be defined for dealing with individuals who “must be right,” “must win,” “must be logical” and “must be accepted.” In addition, techniques will be covered for preventing or responding to anger, sarcasm, denigration, complainers and backbiters and rigid-obstinate personalities. A model will also be discussed for creative interaction with parents who demand involvement in athletic department decision-making or who seek to influence the decisions of senior administrators.

LTC 799 ATHLETIC ADMINISTRATION: STANDARDS OF EXCELLENCE IN INTERSCHOLASTIC ATHLETIC PROGRAMS LEADERSHIP

Training Course 799 has two purposes and potential benefits for high school athletics directors. For newly or recently appointed directors, the course provides an overview of 11 NIAAA Leadership Training Courses (LTCs) including key concepts, strategies and best practices. Whether working to improve a program or looking for long-range planning guidance, this overview of 11 NIAAA course components can be of value. At the close of each of the nine chapters contained in the course manual, other LTCs are cited wherein an athletic director can derive more detailed information on a particular topic addressed within each 799 chapter. For more experienced directors, the same planning and guidance benefits can be derived. However, an additional benefit and incentive can be realized by seeking NIAAA Recognition of Program Excellence as an exemplary athletic program. For this purpose, the course provides an assessment instrument that describes in detail important components of an educationally sound interscholastic athletic program.

RICH PIATCHEKRetired Athletic Director Liaison

As the retired Athletic Director Liaison for the Illinois Athletic Directors Association (IADA), I am continuing to gather information about the history of athletic directors from every school in the state of Illinois. In August 2014, I sent an email to every athletic director

and athletic administrative assistant asking for their help in compiling the history of ALL athletic directors from all of our high schools across the state to become a part of the history of our state association. I followed this up with another letter in August 2015. In this newsletter is a list of 220 schools who have been added to my list by successfully sending me the athletic director history of the school in some form or another. My data now includes 1461 athletic directors from those schools—of which 220 are confirmed deceased—as well as emails for 255 retired athletic directors. This is a good start but I need to continue my quest.

What I am looking for is a list of EVERY athletic director from every high school for the past 50 years (if your school is that old). In this newsletter is a form to fill out and to email back to me. Whatever

information you can provide would be appreciated. We have over 800 schools in our state and over 50 years, probably over 10,000 people who have served as athletic directors for their schools.

We need the years the athletic director served at your school, first name, last name, address, city, state, zip, phone and email. (See sample below.)

I am compiling the history of our state of the Illinois Athletic Directors Association as well as trying to reach out to our many retired athletic directors to communicate to them. All addresses and email for the retired athletic directors are especially helpful.

As a former athletic director, I know how busy you all are and appreciate any help you can provide. I hope the rest of your winter and spring will be exciting and productive. Thanks again for any help you can provide. Feel free to contact me by email of phone.

Jimmy Daniels: retired in 2009 from Rich Township High Schools where he was the athletic director at the Central Campus for 13 years and the athletic director at the East Campus for two years. He also had a brief stay in 2009–2010 as the interim athletic director for Chicago Heights School District 170. Jimmy did check off a couple of items on his bucket list in his first retirement when he bought a 2000 Corvette (dream car) to add to his motorcycle purchased in 2007. His wife retired in 2012 allowing them to travel to Cabo and Cancun, go on two Caribbean cruises and remodel the kitchen. Between 2013 and 2015 Jimmy was inducted into the Illinois Track & Cross Coaches Association (ITCCA) Hall of Fame, was the interim athletic director at Crete-Monee Summer 2013, interim chief informational officer (CIO) Chicago Heights School District 170 from August 2013–June 2015 and inducted into the Thornton Township High School "Wall of Fame" as a faculty member.

Jimmy continues to start track meets in the south-suburbs as he has for the past 15 years. He has recently retired AGAIN and has run his first 5K run (rather behind) with his youngest granddaughter. His future travel plans include Seattle, WA, Portland, OR, Vancouver, Canada, New Orleans, LA, and Galveston, TX. Jimmy is happily married, in good health, enjoying life, especially spending time with the grandkids.

Larry Stewart: retired eight years ago from Greenville High School where he served as athletic director for 24 years. He works the scoreboard at all home football games and keeps the defensive stats at away games. He and his wife have done a lot of traveling, spending two weeks in Ireland and two weeks in Scotland. His ancestors came from Scotland, and he discovered the "Stewart" name there is almost considered royalty. His last trip was to Alaska where he cruised along the coast for seven days and then took a day train ride to Anchorage. Larry and his wife spend the month of January in Destin, Florida, with three other couples. There they play a lot of golf and enjoy eating at all of the

seafood restaurants. They have five grandchildren, the oldest boy will be playing junior high basketball this year. His youngest son is the assistant basketball coach at Edwardsville High School and they attend many of his games, especially the state tournament games they have played in. He is still an IHSA track and field official and does 20 to 25 track meets each spring. His life is good right now, playing a lot of golf, exercising each day and staying busy with church activities.

John Wehmeier: retired as the athletic director from Belleville West High School on June 30, 2003. He had bilateral knee replacement in December 2003. On July 1, 2004, he became commissioner of the Southwestern Conference where he served until June 30, 2014. John and his wife visit their daughter and family in Lubbock, TX, several times a year. They proudly share season tickets to the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team and are PSL and season ticket holders to the St. Louis Rams of the NFL, while they last in St. Louis (oops!). John continues to officiate IHSA track with his crew. This is his 50th year and he plans to retire from full-time officiating this year. He goes to breakfast with friends several times a week and stays active in his church.

Larry Roland: retired 21 years ago (1995) and still loves retirement. He admits the reason is basically because he has more meaningful time with his beautiful and fantastic wife. Larry has recently also retired after many years as an IHSA track starter after working multiple state finals. He and his bride are enjoying their kids and grandkids immensely. They split time between Manteno, Illinois, and Fountain Hills, Arizona. He and Paulette enjoy golfing so much that their travel involves making sure golf courses are on the agenda. This was not the case when they celebrated their 52nd anniversary by traveling to Australia and New Zealand for 37 days. Larry maintains a single-digit handicap and has high expectations of shooting his age soon. At the youthful age of 75, this could come very soon.
