1.0 OBJECTIVES

The transition from school to university may prove to be a challenge for students. Due to the inability to adapt to the new learning environment, it may result in students dropping out or being left behind. By giving first-year students exposure to and engaging them in campus life may prove to be a catalyst for future academic excellence and successful assimilation into the community (Pascarella & Terenzini, 2005; Hunter & Linder, 2005). The First Year Seminar at Universiti Malysia Pahang aims to:

introduce first-year students to the instruction, research, services and vision & mission of the university and how they relate to teaching and learning in and outside the classroom to increase student understanding of and participation in the full vision & mission of the university,

provide first-year students an opportunity for meaningful dialogue with faculty members, administrative staff, student bodies and alumni members,

expose first-year students to pertinent lifelong learning skills which can be applied in various aspects of their academic and campus life,

The First Year Seminar is an audit course for first-year students. The course will be offered periodically throughout the year but first year students are advised to register for the modules, especially the Faculty-based modulesin the first semester. The seminar is divided into two specific components which are Faculty-based modules and Learning Skills modules. For the former, students are encouraged to register for all five (5) modules and for the latter component you can choose five (5) modules from the list of modules offered. If you complete a total of ten (10) modules - five (5) Faculty-based modules and five (5)Learning Skills modules, the added value is that UCS1110 First Year Seminar will appear in your transcript as a course that you have audited. In addition to that, for each module that you attend you will be given a certificate. When registering for any of the modules please also look at the time and venue each module is offered so that it will not be in conflict with your other registered subjects.

Module Synopsis

This module will introduce the programme structure and study plan to the students. Students will be exposed to the credit hour system, courses with pre-requisite, and differences between university, faculty and elective courses. Students will also be made aware of the semester system; maximum number of semesters, deferring and extending semester, transfer credit and how to add/drop/withdraw courses.

Module Synopsis

This module aims to introduce students to plagiarism and strategies to avoid plagiarism in their writing. Students will be exposed to four types of language strategies namely paraphrasing, summarising, synthesising and using quotation, as well as two types of referencing strategies, namely using in-text citation and referencing.

This module aims to introduce Muslim students to spiritual intelligence. It will change our view of the world,make us understand our responsibilities and how to deal with situations wisely.

Modul ini mensasarkan peningkatan kefahaman dan keupayaan melaksanakan solat fardhu secara betul mengikut kaedah Fiqh Shafie. Antara perkara yang akan diikuti oleh para pelajar adalah penjelasan berkenaan kaedah melaksanakan solat dengan betul, penjelasan tentang kesilapan-kesilapan yang biasa berlaku dalam solat, penjelasan tentang hukum-hakam asas berkaitan solat dan juga bimbingan solat secara praktikal.

Module Synopsis

This module aims to create students’ awareness on the functions of the Student Health Centre and UMP OSHMO. Part 1 will discuss elements of health while Part 2 will discuss the elements of safety. Part 1 will elaborate on the statistics/census of students' illness and how to get assistance from the Student Health Centre during/after office hours. Part 2 will discuss the safety aspects related to the UMP OSH Manual and regulations. Students’ information on health, safety and environment will be enhanced through 6 topics which consists of Introduction to OSH, OSHMO, OSH Procedure, OSH Guidelines, OSH Rules, OSH related forms based on the OSHA 1994 and FMA 1967.
