INSTRUMENTS

BIT ERROR RATE TESTERS Bit error rate testers (BERTs) are usually the initial step for communications

testing. What these instruments do is generate a digital test pattern,

typically a pseudorandom binary sequence (PRBS), which drives a device

under test (DUT) that could be an optical module plugged into the faceplate

of the instrument. Following the transmission through the link, the receiver

in the BERT captures the signal. This setup can be used for multiple testing

purposes, such as to evaluate the performance of a transmitter, receiver

or an optical link. MultiLane supports general-purpose BERTs that connect through fixtures and coax

cables, as well as BERTs that present an MSA compliant standard.

A BERT needs to be tailored to the characteristics of the device that requires testing. Key parameters include:

• Baud rate

• Number of channels

• Modulation format (e.g., NRZ, PAM-4, etc.)

• Test pattern (e.g., PRBS15)

• Signal amplitude

• Port type (e.g., QSFP-DD)

OSCILLOSCOPES To evaluate the performance of transmitters

through jitter and eye-diagram analysis, digital

sampling oscilloscopes are essential tools. They

are sometimes used in unison with a BERT, which

produces the digital test pattern, while the

oscilloscope captures the signal after it has run

through the tested device for signal quality

analysis.

When specifying a scope, planning for extensibility

is vital. The user’s test requirements change with

the progress of the data communications market.

TIME DOMAIN ANALYZERS (BERT + SCOPE)

One of our most practical instruments is the time domain analyzer (TDA). We have developed this general-

purpose high-speed instrument to facilitate processes when it comes to product development, regular lab

usage, and customer support. Our TDAs have combined a source, an error analyzer and a high-speed

TIME DOMAIN REFLECTOMETRY

For testing cables and interconnects, we offer the ideal tool: A time domain reflectometer (TDR). Time

domain reflectometry/transmission can be used to test network return loss (S11), propagation loss (S21) and

crosstalk. Moreover, it can provide the impedance profile of an electrical channel. MultiLane supplies semi-

automated solutions for the testing of direct-attach cables and TIAs.

OPTICAL SWITCH BOXES

An optical switch box is needed so that automated test platforms can permit the system to measure the

performance of transmitters and receivers at multiple wavelengths or channels, depending on the

transceiver design. The MLO4034 Optical Switch Box incorporates a WDM demultiplexer, integrated power

meters, variable optical attenuators and optical switches to form an integrated switch matrix. It enables

receivers and transmitters to be tested at up to four wavelengths or channels.

CLOCK RECOVERY MODULES

Optical clock recovery modules are required when a clock signal is not

present to trigger the oscilloscope or when it is better to use the embedded

clock present in the data stream, such as for 100G Lambda optical signals.

Clock recovery modules are an essential tool for transmitter signal

A host compliance board is a breakout fixture that

It is a passive structure for optimum signal

Passive/thermal loads

Loopback modules are packaged in a standard MSA housing compatible with its

respective ports. Transmit data from the host is electrically routed (internal to the

loopback module) to the receive data outputs and back to the host. These modules act as

thermal loads and have programmable power dissipation. This design provides an

economical way to exercise system ports during R&D validation, production testing, and

field testing.

ADAPTERS An adapter can function either as a port extender that keeps the same form factor while providing signal

access for diagnostics, or as a media converter that transforms one MSA-compliant form factor into

another. The port extender provides access to low-speed control signals, or power supply lines, and can be

used in conjunction with an analyzer board for CMIS state machine analysis. This also enables the debug of

a host-to-module connection.

SOLUTIONS AND SERVICES Testing is a necessary part of product development, qualification and manufacturing. In recognition of this

key step, MultiLane’s diverse portfolio of test solutions and services is there to facilitate the test process and

minimize human error. We excel at the qualification process and compliance testing services, thanks to our

automated test platform and prepackaged test suites. At MultiLane, we offer these capabilities to our

customers, performing full-circle testing support for their development, characterization, validation, and

manufacturing requirements.

AUTOMATED TRANSCEIVER TESTING 100G CWDM4 has arrived at the data

center. As a result, testing transmitters

and receivers has become four times

more time-consuming and complex. To

streamline the process, we have

developed our ML7007 software, an

automated platform that orchestrates

the test process. Used with our

MLO4034 optical switch box, the

software can fully characterize a device

with no need for human intervention.

The technician simply connects the

switch box to an oscilloscope and the

appropriate BERT. At only a press of the

start button, the platform runs the tests

and generates a fully detailed printout of

the results. Either the ML4070 BERT

margin tester or the ML4054 BERT,

optimized for manufacturing

environments, can be used by the

solution.

DAC CABLE TESTING Our ML4035 TDR is built to test direct-attach cables. It has an integrated calibration routine and a GUI

designed for simple operation. The instrument is used to characterize return and insertion loss. Users can

also view the results, compare them to standards, and print test reports.

COMPLIANCE TESTING Developing a component is important, but it is not enough. There is a

need to confirm performance and demonstrate interoperability. We

offer two different approaches to compliance testing depending on the

customers’ needs.

COMPLIANCE TEST SUITE For customers who want to perform compliance testing themselves, we offer our compliance test suite. It is

designed to test hosts as well as modules for OIF_CEI_03.1 and IEEE_CAUI-4 compliance. The solution

supports output and stressed input tests. An oscilloscope, a reference clock and a DUT are the three main

elements required for an output test. The user makes the hardware connections, chooses the standard of

interest, configures the DSP and then chooses the appropriate measurements. In contrast, a stressed input

test requires a BERT, an oscilloscope, an MCB and an HCB. For both of these tests, the system generates a

report showing performance relative to the standard chosen.

COMPLIANCE TEST SERVICES With lean staffing and a lack of time, equipment vendors can find qualifying parts to be challenging. Instead,

they can direct their efforts and focus toward developing and manufacturing products to serve their

customers and leave compliance testing to MultiLane. MultiLane offers 100G Optical and Electrical

compliance testing services for system vendors, system integrators, module vendors and switch vendors. We

have been aiding transceiver vendors to optimize their products and pass standard specifications since

November of 2015. Examples of standards supported include 100GBase-LR4, PSM4, CWDM4 and CAUI-4. In

addition, 400G and 100G Lambda Compliance test services are also available upon request.

THERMAL TEST SOLUTIONS The validation of optical transceivers over temperature is critical to test spec compliance over operating

conditions and to demonstrate the robustness of the technology. MultiLane has developed a scalable solution

that enables the thermal testing of transceivers with precise temperature control. In order to provide this

capability MultiLane designed custom doors, which is part of the MLT8000 Series of Thermal Solutions, that

fit into a standard TestEquity thermal chamber, and can hold up to 16 low profile 400G BERTs with DUTs. The

DUTs will be inside of the chamber, and the test equipment will be

outside, properly thermally isolated. With this setup, up to 16 DUTs

can be tested simultaneously for optical transmitter characteristics

such as eye diagram mask margin and TDECQ, and receiver

sensitivity.
