HOME OF THE THREE-TIME NCAA DIVISION II MEN’S GOLF NATIONAL CHAMPIONS 5

The University of South Carolina Aiken was chartered in 96 after entering into an agreement with the University of South Carolina to establish a two-year center in Aiken. The Aiken Center opened its doors in September 96 to 39 students. Temporarily housed in Banksia, a renovated mansion in Aiken, the Center consisted of three full-time faculty members (one of whom served as Director of the Center). In 968, the Center underwent an institutional self-study and was accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools as a branch of the University of South Carolina and as a junior college. The first associate degrees were awarded in June 968. The campus of USC Aiken moved from Banksia to its present site in 972 and physical changes began to occur rapidly. At first, the permanent campus consisted of 00 acres and one multipurpose building which housed all university operations. A library was completed in 975, and additional land was donated that increased the campus to 44 acres. In October 977, the Student Activities Center was opened. A classroom building was occupied in 978, and one year later, an auxiliary services building was added. An apartment complex for students, Pacer Downs, was ready for occupancy in the fall of 984. More construction

addit ions to the campus included completion of the Etherredge Center, Ruth Patrick Science Education Center, the Business and Education Building, and the Alan B. Miller Nursing Building. Additional land was acquired increasing the campus to 400 acres. A c a d e m i c and organizational changes also occurred rapidly. The faculty formalized its organizational structure and redefined its role in the governance of the institution in 974-75. Also, the students reorganized their governing body and more precisely defined their role on campus; the administration and staff structures were overhauled and expanded to meet the demands of the growing academic programs. When the full-time equivalent student enrollment reached ,066 in the fall of 975, the USC Aiken campus was permitted to plan for senior level courses and to create a number of baccalaureate degree programs. In that same year, USCA received approval as a four-year branch campus by the Board of Trustees of the University of South

Carolina, and USCA was designated a Recognized Candidate for Senior College Accreditation. In September 976, the Board of Trustees granted academic autonomy to the Aiken Campus. The first bachelor’s degrees were granted in May 977, and USCA became a fully accredited senior college. Presently, the college community is comprised of more than 3,200 students, over 00 full-time faculty, approximately 0 staff members, and 28 administrators. USCA awards bachelor’s degrees in more than 20 major areas of study, master’s degrees in two areas, and offers a varied program of continuing education courses for the wider community. Today USC Aiken offers students a liberal education designed to develop an understanding of human experience which will equip them for life in a free society. To accomplish this, the University provides students with an opportunity to discover learning processes which enable them to grow personally and socially. It promotes students’ interaction within a community of active scholars and artists, and it encourages students to use the knowledge which they gain to deal with the problems of a rapidly changing world.

USC AIKEN CONVOCATION CENTER

As USC Aiken Athletics has grown, its place in the context of the University as a whole has evolved. With heightened importance comes the need for new tools for success. The Convocation Center, opened in April 2007, is the grandest tool yet that will equip the Pacer programs with op-portunities to succeed. A vision some 5 years in the making, the construction of the facil-ity came to fruition only because of the dedicated hard work of campus and community leaders. As everyone bought into the idea, the resources were raised to make this dream a reality. Funding for the $7 million, 00,000 square foot facility came from both public and private sources.

USC AIKEN CONVOCATION CENTER

With a groundbreaking ceremony on December 9, 2005, construction in earnest began with a 4-month timetable laid out for the project’s completion. With China Construction as the builders of the project, Chinese National Television was on hand for the historic groundbreaking. In addition to giving the men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball programs a new, state-of-the-art facil-ity in which to practice and play, the athletic department as a whole has expanded space and added modern offices in which to operate. Visitors to the building are greeted initially by the beautiful John C. Troutman Family Lobby. Highlighted by the Lew Perkins Wall of Champions,

the lobby works as a museum of Pacer greatness, both past and present. The Wall of Champions is a dedication to Lew Perkins, the former USC Aiken basketball coach and athletic director and current Director of Athletics at Kansas University, and is a timeline of USC Aiken athletics. The lobby also includes trophy cases dedicated to each sport, and a hanging banner featuring a prominent student-athlete from each sport’s past. The main arena has a seating ca-pacity of 3,600 for athletic events. The men’s and women’s basketball and vol-leyball teams will all practice and hold home events in the arena, which has state-of-the-art sound and scoreboard systems.

One practice floor is located on each side of the arena above the main competition floor, allowing the possi-bility for up to three teams to practice simultaneously. Overlooking the main competition floor is the VIP room, which gives the department a facility with a beautiful backdrop to host meetings, confer-ences, or banquets.

In addition, the building consists of eight spacious locker rooms, in-cluding dedicated ones for the men’s basketball, women’s basketball, and volleyball teams. The first weight training facil-ity dedicated to the student-athlete is also housed in the Convocation Center next to athletic training room.

WOMEN’S SOCCER: HEAD COACH SUSAN VODICKA

Susan Vodicka enters her fourth season at the helm of the Pacers women’s soccer program. In her first three seasons, the Pacers have posted a 5-38-3 record. Last season, Vodicka’s team went 5-3- overall and -6- in Peach Belt play, finishing eighth in the conference. The Pacers defeated Georgia Southwestern for the third straight year by a score of 5- at home. Lindsey Mann was tabbed to the Preseason All-Conference Team after being named to the team as a freshman and helping the Pacers defense to six shutouts. Vodicka engineered a remarkable turnaround in 2006, guiding her squad to a fourth place finish in the Peach Belt Conference after being predicted to place ninth. USCA finished the season 7-11-2, including a 4-4- mark in PBC play. The four conference wins marked the combined total for the program’s previous six seasons of league play. The PBC coaches took notice of the work Vodicka had done and named her the 2006 PBC Coach of the Year, the first USCA women’s soccer coach to earn that award. In her first season with the Pacers, Vodicka began laying the building blocks for a successful program moving forward. Hired late in the summer, Vodicka fielded a team that was short on numbers, but not on excitement and hard work. The Pacers responded by

MEN’S SOCCER: HEAD COACH IKE OFOJE

Ike Ofoje begins his 3th season as head coach of men’s soccer and his fourth year as Director of Soccer Operations at USC Aiken. In 996, Ofoje was hired and has helped build the program to what it is today. He started the women’s soccer program in his second year, 997, and served as head coach of both programs for eight seasons. Ofoje led the Pacers to a fourth place conference finish with a 7-9-2 overall record and a 4-2-0 PBC mark. USCA defeated No. 4 ranked Clayton State at home, 3-, for the second straight year. In 2006, Ofoje guided the Pacers to their most successful season in the program’s history. After being picked to finish seventh in the Peach Belt Conference, USCA had fewer losses than any other PBC team and fell just one point short of the league title. The Pacers set school records in both overall and conference wins, finishing the season with a 2-6-2 record, 4--2 in the PBC, including a 2- win over Lander on October 4. The Pacers also achieved their first-ever national ranking and appeared in the PBC Championship game. The rest of the league’s coaches took notice, naming Ofoje the 2006 PBC Coach of the Year. The success in 2006 came on the heels of a 2005 in which the Pacers finished just 2-13-2. After a winless season in 2003 at 0--0, the 2004 edition went 5--2.

The 200 campaign, in which the Pacers finished 10-9-0 in Ofoje’s sixth season on the USCA sideline, marked the program’s first winning season since 994 and only its second winning record since joining the NCAA Division II in 990. Ofoje’s 2002 team reached another milestone. The Pacers entered that year’s Peach Belt Conference Tournament as the seventh seed, but Andre Joseph’s game winner with four minutes to play lifted USCA to a stunning 2- upset over eighth-ranked, and second seeded North Florida and gave the program its first-ever PBC Tournament victory. On the women’s side, Ofoje compiled a 5-77-0 record in his eight seasons as head coach. After struggling through a -4- inaugural season in 997, Ofoje led the Pacers to a 45-39-7 record over the next five seasons. In 2002 the Pacers scored the program’s first-ever win over a top-10 team, a 2- overtime victory over ninth ranked Francis Marion University. Ofoje, a 99 graduate of New Hampshire College, was a two-time NCAA Division II All-American and was named Most Valuable Player for his 989 NCAA National Championship team. As a player at New Hampshire College, Ofoje led his teams to a 72-5-4 record and four NCAA Tournament appearances. He totaled 58 goals, 36 assists, and 52 points in 75 career matches. He owns the school record for most career points, is tied for most career assists, and is a member of the New Hampshire College Hall of Fame. After graduation, Ofoje played professionally in the United Systems

After a historic second place finish in conference play last season, the Pacers look to better their position this year with a core group of returnees and a host of new recruits. “The Pacers are dreaming big this year with a goal of winning the Peach Belt Conference title,” according to USC Aiken men’s soccer coach Ike Ofoje. Having come very close to its first ever conference title last year, the Pacers will look to the leadership of the current seniors: Tim Costanzo, Jon Boyles, Ryan Bannon, Reuben Ojeyinka, a n d t e a m c a p t a i n s Kofi Akyere, D u r e l l J o h n s o n , a n d J o h n Lesko to re-alize this lofty dream. With the addition of a talented r e c r u i t i n g c lass , the Pacers hope to improve on its enter-taining brand o f soccer. The PBC league play has gotten very competitive in the last two years with no dominant teams as has been in the past. However, Lander University and Clayton State still rank at the top of the league.

The following is a position-by-position look at the 2008 Pacers:

Goalkeepers Andray Charles, who is a national team goalkeeper for his native country of Grenada, will be joining the Pacers as well as Milad Zariean, a transfer from Medaille College, Buffalo, N.Y. They will both battle for time in the goal, and picking one over the other will be very difficult because, according to coach

Ofoje, “they are both very experienced goalkeepers with similar qualities.”

Defenders The defense is the one area the Pacers have a good number of return-ees, and that will give them the depth they never had in the past. The following players will be battling for spots in the defense: Alex Lewis, Co-captain John Lesko, James Chidsey, Connor Ardrey, and Ryan Bannon. Competing alongside these returnees will be newcomers Francis Noonan, Seth Sofferin, and Chijioke Agbasi.

Midfielders The midfield posit ion is where coach Ofoje is hop-ing that the ta lent and experience of the returning players and some of the new players wi l l propel the team to new heights t h i s y e a r. Conference co-player of the year last

year and All-American Honorable men-tion Kofi Akyere will be the player to watch, as well as, sophomore transfer from Montreat College, Troy Watson. “Troy will be without a doubt the most dangerous player to mark on our team this year.” Ofoje hinted. The other key returnees that will form the backbone of the Pacer midfield are co-captain Durell Johnson, Tim Costanzo, Corey Adamson, Kevin Orzech and Zach Davis. Davis is slowly becoming a dominant player for the Pacers. Newcomers Kazeem Ayodele, Amr Hailat, and Casey Rossiter are also expected to see time at the position.

The Pacers Dream Big in 2008

Forwards Reuben Ojeyinka will be a key returnee to power the offense again this year. Junior transfer from Erskine College, Fernando Gamez, and a fresh-man from Evans, Ga., Pieter James, will support him. Another freshman from Charlotte, N.C., James Plummer, will be in contention for playing time. “Pieter may have the freshman jitters the first few games or even the entire year” says Ofoje, “but he is a talented forward and goal scorer that will mature into a formidable player in the PBC.”
