When Mike Jeffcoat took over the Texas WesleyanBaseball Program in 2002, the Rams had fallen on hardtimes. Five years later he is well along the road towardbuilding a contender. After a 14-23 campaign in 2002,the Rams have posted 30 or more wins in three of thelast four seasons including 34 wins and a RRAC NorthDivision Title in 2005 and 31 wins and appearancces inthe RRAC Championship Game, as well as the RegionVI Tournament in 2006. The 2007 Rams have a solidnucleus returning and some young talent that theyhope will put the Rams into the NAIA national picture.

Being a former pitcher and veteran of ten major-leagueseasons, it is not surprising that Coach Jeffcoat firmlybelieves baseball is about pitching and defense. Thoseare also the strong suits of thisyear’s squad. Texas Wesleyanreturns Weston Wood, CalebThomas, Hayden Lackey, andAaron Lenz, who all saw signifi-cant innings on the hill last sea-son. They are also getting backtwo pitchers who redshirtedlast season in Jayson Rachuigand Jesse Wright.

Wood was named 1st-team All-Red River in 2006 posting a3.44 ERA and 77 strikeouts in73.31 innings. Lackey wasnamed 2nd-team All-Red Riverin 2006 while amassing 27appearances. Caleb Thomasstarted against Texas Tech andwent 6 inning allowing only 4earned runs, while Lenz startedthe Conference TournamentChampionship Game.

This spring will also see aninflux of new arms to help theRams as they set their sights ona Region VI Championship. UT-Arlington transfer Ryan Riddle looks to step into theshoes left behind by 2006 Honorable Mention All-American Shea Harrison. Riddle went 4-3 with a 4.73ERA at UTA and looks to head up the staff withWeston Wood. The Rams also welcome LandonNewton (TR-Lon Morris), Justin Krause (FR-ForneyHS), Stephen Kinsey (FR-Haltom HS),Aaron Wimpee

(TR-Murray State JC),and Larry Vela (TR-Frank Phillips).Newton and Krauselook to battle Thomasand Rachuig for thethird conference-start-ing slot. That makesfor a deep rotation(Wood, Riddle,Thomas,Rachuig, Newton, andKrause) and a strongbullpen (Lackey,Wright,Wimpee, Lenz, Kinsey, and Vela).

Offensively the Rams

must replace some key components to last years team. The biggest holes were left by All-American ZachArcher (.402, 18 2b, 38 RBI) and 2005 2nd-team All-Red River first baseman Travis Clifford (.333, 9hr,51RBI). However, the Rams do return the vast majori-ty of their 2006 offense.

Heading up the returnees is two-time All-Conferenceperformer Josh Vander Hey (.304, 8 hr, 38 RBI). Alsoreturning are 3B Jason Diaz, SS Billie Hicks, 2B RossElmore, 2nd-team All-Red River OF Brandon Frazier, and RF Antoine Cole. The Rams have some questionmarks, but Coach Jeffcoat is hoping to fill those spotswith the deepest bench he has had in his tenure atTexas Wesleyan. Ben Kliever (Fr., Grace Prep) can play

second, third, or shortstop ifasked, and he looks to back upthree seniors in those possitionsthis spring. Taylor Miller (Fr.,Arlington Heights HS) will startthe season opener at first base. The outfield is exeptionallydeep. The Rams return theaforementioned Frazier andCole, as well as J.R. Phelps andJeremy Howard. Texas Wesleyanalso added a few signees in theoff-season to make things a bitmore interesting. Ryan Jacobi(Fr., Mansfield HS) and VictorBurgos (TR-Northlake) look tobattle for an outfield spot.Chris Palmer (.370, 4 hr, 27 RBI)returns as the designated hitter, but Brad Henderson, J.R. Phelps,Jeremy Howard, and VictorBurgos will all look to get someat-bats in that capacity.

Defensively the Rams are excit-ed about their look with threeseniors and one freshman in theinfield; Miller, 1B, Elmore, 2B,

Diaz, 3B, and Hicks, SS. In the outfield, Frazier returnsto centerfield with five quality fielders (Cole, Phelps,Howard, Jacobi, and Burgos) getting time in left andright. Josh Vander Hey will handle duties behind thedish with two young players looking to compete forplaying time: Ryan Ragsdale (Fr., Birdville HS) and RyanHicks (Fr., Grace Prep). The coaching staff is excitedabout what they feel will be the best defense TexasWesleyan has seen in some time.

The Rams have plenty to be excited about with somequality seasons to build off of. Coach Jeffcoat believesthat this team has a legitimate shot at winning theRRAC North Title for the second time in three yearsand winning the Conference Tournament for the firsttime. A second consecutive NAIA Region VI bid is defi-nitely in the realm of possibilities and fans should beexcited about their chances versus Sooner Conferencerivals Oklahoma City, Lubbock Christian,WaylandBaptist, and Oklahoma Baptist, as well as RRACChampion Houston Baptist (all teams oppositeWesleyan in last spring’s Region VI Tournament).
