Program Summary

Digischool is HCL’s premier multimedia-based educational offering that embodies the proverbial “Learning by Doing” approach. Digischool is a

technology-oriented initiative that uses the power of multimedia to make learning an enjoyable and meaningful experience. Designed specifically

for Indian classrooms, it provides rich content as well as the systems to enable a participative instructor-led learning experience supported by

strong media.

With Digischool, pictures and animations bring to life scientific principles while interactive multimedia allows students to play an active role in

learning. Students can watch experiments in action, see micro-organisms up close, know how food is digested and use an interactive white board

to work with images, simulations and other interactive material. It is no wonder then that the Digischool program keeps students thoroughly

engaged in the learning process.

As part of this program, each school is provided with a centrally located server that is loaded with multimedia content, relevant software, and an

Operating System. This server is connected to a Desktop computer, which can be accessed by the teacher. The teacher can project material from the

Desktop computer to an LCD display for viewing in the classroom. Teachers can also prepare their lesson plans using the software, and access

relevant content according to their plans. The use of multimedia speakers ensures that the lecture is clearly audible to all the students in the class.

Instructional Design Methodology Digischool courses complement the existing CBSE/State Board curriculum’s instructional model. The focus here is on a “hands-on” approach that not

only teaches the concepts but also shows students how to apply the concepts through interactive exercises, practice simulations, and class projects.

The instructional model applied in the design of these nuggets is derived from the 5 E’s of learning. This model borrows from the works of Gagne and

the Constructivists.

It was originally designed by the Biological Science Curriculum Study (BSCS), and was later adopted by many American schools and content

development institutions. As per this approach, a good piece (or set) of instructional content is expected to incorporate the 5 Es.

Advisory Panel: Key Profiles

The Digischool program is headed by an advisory board of distinguished members who have made phenomenal contributions to the field of

education, in India and abroad.

Dr. Manmohan Singh Arora A retired Professor of Mathematics & Statistics, Dr. Manmohan Singh Arora has extensive academic, administrative and consulting experience spanning more than 40 years in India, the U. S., and the Middle East. He has worked with UNESCO as an Advisor to the Government of Bahrain to assist with the setting up of a new university based on the American semester-credit system. Dr. Arora was also a Professor of Mathematics & Statistics at NCERT, New Delhi.

He has expertise in curriculum development and teacher training, and has served as a key professor in the committee for National Talent Search and Mathematics Olympiads at the state and national levels. He was also President of the Delhi Association of Mathematics Teachers (DAMT). Dr. Arora has authored and edited a mathematics textbook series with new emphasis from classes I to XII. He was a Member of the Smt. Indira Gandhi National Committee on Curriculum and the National Committee on Review of Curriculum. He was also a Member of the Interview Board, National Science Talent Search Scheme, NCERT and a Head Examiner/Paper–Setter/Moderator for National Secondary & Senior Secondary Mathematics Examinations of the CBSE & UPSC.

Dr. Dharam Prakash Dr. Dharam Prakash has 38 years of rich experience in the education and training sector and has retired as Professor, Educational Technology from NCERT, Delhi. He worked extensively for school television at the Directorate of Education, Delhi CIET, NCERT in Film & Video production in various capacities, including Head of Media Production. During his tenure at the IIT Delhi and TTTI, Chandigarh, he helped conceptualize production and multimedia facilities for developing content for engineering subjects. He also conceptualized multimedia self learning packages for secondary level students published by NCERT.

Dr. Prakash has developed several teacher’s training packages and teaching-learning materials (Kits). He has also conducted Teachers’ training using satellite based technology (EDU SAT). Dr. Prakash also has several published works to his name in the field of training and education. He was awarded the B.K. Passi Prize (2008) by the All India Association of Educational Research (AIAER) for the best paper in Education Technology based on a pilot study for using mobile devices for delivery of educational content and interaction.

Enabling the Architects (D2LT)

Digischool is a Teacher-oriented solution that incorporates intervention points into the content where teachers can raise questions for students

and engage them in meaningful discussions and interactions. A teacher has the power to engage students and make learning fun. Technology

can play a key role in aiding this process.

The most important person in the teaching process is, of course, the teacher. While the Digischool program provides numerous teaching aids,

these need to be integrated effectively into the teacher’s personal teaching style. To facilitate this integration process, HCL organizes workshops

known as Digischool Digital Literacy Training (D2LT). These three to five day workshops are held for concerned faculty members with the aim of

equipping them with the required skills to integrate the Digischool technology aids into their pedagogy and teaching methodology. The D2LT

sessions focus on how to incorporate the various nuggets and learning objects available in the content repository, into everyday classroom

sessions. Here are the schedules of the D2LT workshops:

In the first year of contract, a three to five day training will be conducted in the inception month followed by a one-day refresher

training on a quarterly basis.

However, during the second to the fifth year, mandatory one-day training will be conducted on a quarterly basis.
