Latest Reason for This FAQ Update This update adds relevant message threads from the Yahoo JMT Group through important threads about the new permit rules and alternatives/options for doing a JMT for Yahoo Postings from 1/1/2015 through 03/31/2015 plus important posting since 01/01/2016 through the date given on the title page of this document. This update has all observed important Facebook postings initiated on Facebook from 01/01/2015 through the date given on the title page of this document. On March 17, 2016, I renamed the file from “FB and Yahoo Threads on current JMT Permit Rules “ to “FB and Yahoo JMT Permit FAQ”. On January 28, 2016, I added a new section at the end on “getting the most out of the two JMT Social Groups.” On February 16, 2016, the notes on an East-Shifted SOBO and doing either a shifted NOBO or MOBO (where Inyo Forest controls the reservation/permit) were improved.

December 31st, 2015, Update Note As of this update, this FAQ will serve to benefit members of both the Yahoo JMT Group as well as the Facebook JMT Group (previously the FAQ was predominantly aimed at the Facebook JMT group members). You do not need to belong to both groups to get benefit from this FAQ, but to be able to chase down all links, you will need to belong to both. You can belong to the Yahoo JMT Group and not receive any emails from posters though, just setup your communication preference to be “web-only” for messages. This update was made because there are some very informative messages posted from / for both groups. Together, the messages posted address the permit issues optimally.

Commentary First of all, a little about me. I am the lead moderator of the John Muir Trail Yahoo Group and I have done the JMT 8 times (as of January 2016). On the JMT Yahoo Group, we have a research archive on the JMT that is not surpassed nor matched by any other website (because we have so many experts in the group). Facebook is not setup to be a research archive, whereas Yahoo supports nested folders for links, files, databases, and photographs. We have made extensive use of everything. We are referenced by Elizabeth Wenk and the Pacific Crest Trail Association as a vital resource for JMT hikers. We have over 4500 members as of this bibliography date. Go here to join if you have not already: https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/johnmuirtrail/info For newcomers I recommend you read this thread first, it explains the new JMT application rules issues by Yosemite, effective, 2/2/2015.

To get a permit to do the JMT, one needs to think outside the box. Here are the categorical approaches to getting a JMT permit:

Approach Short Title Approach description Note Kosher JMT Southbound (SOBO)

Get a permit per the specific rules in Yosemite’s NP JMT FAQ from Happy Isles to Whitney Portal

One’s odds for getting this are very remote; best obtained if one applies every day until you win the lottery; problem is that many others are playing this same game.

East-Side Start-shifted JMT Southbound (SOBO) Permit

Start the JMT in Tuolumne Meadows (or continue your JMT in 2 permits after first getting a short one to go to Tuolumne Meadows from Happy Isles) where you do the 4 passes to the East of Donahue Pass and then connect with the JMT at Rush Creek just before you head South and going over Island Pass.

There are several threads linked to below in this FAQ that describe this approach. You end up doing more passes than the 11 legacy passes involved in a JMT hike. See Pete Bolesh’s excellent Youtube video of their East-Shifted SOBO (source link at Facebook) as well as a blog writeup. See this Sierra Mapper depiction of the route showing you what it is like until you get to Red’s Meadow. (Compare such with the legacy SOBO approach from Happy Isles to Red’s Meadow.) Pictures of much of this East-Shifted SOBO prior to getting to the Rush Creek junction on the JMT is shown here.

West-Side Start-shifted JMT Southbound (SOBO) Permit

Start the JMT either in Tuolumne Meadows, Happy Isles, or points SW in Yosemite NP and connect to the JMT near Devil’s Postpile after going over Isberg Pass in SW Yosemite NP.

There are several threads linked to below in this FAQ that describe this approach. You end up doing more passes than the 11 legacy passes involved in a JMT hike.

Kosher JMT Northbound (NOBO) – from Horseshoe Meadows or Cottonwood Meadows

Since the JMT officially terminates or starts at Whitney Summit, one can get to the summer either from the West or the East; getting a Kosher JMT NOBO permit from the West is the easiest to obtain. See this page.

The advantage of getting this permit is that one has 32 miles to hike before getting to the Summit, allowing more time to adjust to the altitude, plus one does not have to deal with the Whitney Quota Lottery game. See this page by Heather Goudreau as well.1 A good YouTube Video by Tim Seymour of this NOBO hike is shown here with much discussion here.

Kosher JMT NOBO – from Whitney Portal

Get a permit per the specific rules by Inyo National Forest to hike the JMT NOBO starting at Whitney Portal. See this page for the rules.

The problem with this approach besides it being a lottery is that the dates to discover you win are past the dates you could have gotten a NOBO JMT permit starting at Horseshoe Meadows.

Kosher JMT Bi-Directional, Two-Permit Approach (first NOBO, then SOBO). Note, this is called the MOBO approach, named by Byron Nevins but publicized by John Ladd.2

At any of the large two digit number of intermediate trailheads on the East or the West of the JMT, get a permit to first hike NOBO to Happy Isles, then bus back to near your starting point, get your second permit from the Forest Service to then hike from that initial starting point to Whitney Portal or Horseshoe Meadows. See this spreadsheet.

This requires getting two permits, spaced apart in time equal to the time it takes to hike the first “half” and bus back to the nearest forest agency to pick up the second permit (that has been reserved ahead of time), and then get back to that initial starting mid-point and hike southbound. Horseshoe or Cottonwood Meadows Trailhead is the easier second permit to get. Also see the MOBO section below.

Start-shifted JMT Northbound (NOBO) Permit

Start the JMT at Kennedy Meadows and hike either the entire JMT to Happy Isles or end after 220 miles (the same length of the JMT).

This adds an additional 65 miles to one’s hike if you do the entire hike.

1 The advice the NOBO web page gives on shuttle service should be amended here. Look at the JMT Crib Sheet, section S3 and S4 for two licensed shuttle services to consider using. 2 See MOBO.PDF (no author name appears in the file but John Ladd attributes the authorship to Byron Nevins) in the files tab, https://www.facebook.com/groups/2240988980/10152829851203981/ and this thread, https://www.facebook.com/groups/2240988980/permalink/10152830431848981/

For a nice writeup on the NOBO, shifted NOBO and MOBO permit option when it involves Inyo National Forest, see the below section. I also recommend you review the 51 page slideshow I presented on the JMT to the Sierra Club in Reno, Nevada, March 2015. http://bit.ly/JMT_SlideShow_201503 You’ll need good maps to do your JMT. Read my 34 page analytical comparison review of the 5 JMT map guides: http://trailtosummit.com/comprehensive-review-5-jmt-guidebooks/ Additionally, you’ll want maps that will show you the alternate trailheads and how to drive or shuttle to them. See this file about the most comprehensive map of the Sierra surrounding the JMT (aside from Yosemite National Park): https://www.facebook.com/groups/2240988980/10152776398453981/ Also recommended are maps from either National Geographic or Tom Harrison about (in sorted order): Ansel Adams Wilderness Area Golden Trout Wilderness Area Hoover Wilderness in Humboldt Toiyabe National Forest Kings Canyon Sequoia National Forest Sequoia National Park Sierra National Forest

Note, Hoover Wilderness in Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest are no longer issuing permits from either Twin Lakes, Virginia Lakes, or Green Creek Trailhead where the intent is to hike the JMT once the permit holder arrives at Tuolumne Meadows. All trails (and maps) of the Inyo National Forest are shown on this web page, along with all trail names and quotas. Hat tip to Vance Pomeroy for posting this link in the JMT Yahoo Group. You should also review the Sierra Administrative Boundaries map created by Elizabeth Wenk which is a PDF document located here and in the Facebook Files tab. This will let you know from whom you need to apply to get a permit depending upon which point of the JMT you want to start (before the beginning, beginning, or any midpoint, east or west of the JMT). Cartographer, Jen Dvorsky, also did a political boundary map of the JMT zone too and provided permission to include it in my documentation. Here is the zoomed-out map followed by the two zoomed-in portions of the map. Thank you, Jen!

I review the 5 JMT map guides in great depth (34 pages, with an included Excel scoring spreadsheet which you can tailor the scoring weights), which is published here: http://trailtosummit.com/comprehensive-review-5-jmt-guidebooks/ . If the link does not work, use this backup link (TrailToSummit reports some temporary problems). Two books tie for #1 but the unadjusted raw score shows the John Muir Trail Data Book by Elizabeth Wenk, 2014, to have the highest raw score. What is relevant about this book for this document about permits is that she shows 33 lateral trails that connect to the JMT on pages 109-112 and shows the length to the JMT and what permit agency to go through to get the permit, as well as what towns are accessed to get to the trailhead. For each of these trails she provides the trail name, length, elevation gain/loss, GPS coordinates, trailhead elevation and the name of the JMT junction and the mileage offset on the JMT where it joins (either headed northbound or southbound). One of the main permit options is to get two permits, one headed Northbound from some midway point, the other, starting so many days later, starting from the same point, headed Southbound. For instance, you could use recreation.gov and get a permit hiking north on the JMT from Devil’s Postpile, and another one scheduled for 2 weeks later to let you hike from Devil’s Postpile on the JMT south of there. You’d have to buss (on a YARTS bus) from Yosemite Valley to Mammoth Lakes once you got to Yosemite Valley after using up your first permit, then at Mammoth Lakes picking up your second permit, and then going back to the trailhead and hiking south then on that second permit. I call this approach the bi-directional, two-permit JMT permit reservation method. Elizabeth Wenk’s book is great for doing this as her table of 33 lateral trails shows you how to do each of those options! Additionally, DJ Ayers in the Yahoo JMT group has documented 230 trailheads with access to the JMT. You have to join the Yahoo Group to download this file, but it's free. It is a great job of documentation. He has two files (KMZ for seeing such on Google Earth and XLSX for seeing it in Excel). See this John Muir Trail Yahoo Group Folder Link for the files mentioned. Go here to join the group, you need to have a basic Yahoo account to have access to the web portion of the group (files and links). You do not need to use Yahoo Email though. https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/johnmuirtrail/info To create a Yahoo Account, go here: https://login.yahoo.com/config/login and click on “Create Account”. The John Muir Trail Yahoo Group has over 4600 members and has more research material on Sierra hiking than all the other known web sites combined, this is due to the fact that we have some of the best researchers actively contributing to the site and we have a rich depth of folders in both the Links and Files section of the online library. Note these two authorities and what they say about the group: From http://www.pcta.org/discover-the-trail/john-muir-trail/jmt-faq/

“Where do people go online to talk about the JMT? We recommend the John Muir Trail Yahoo Group and JMT Facebook group as active hubs for discussion related to the John Muir Trail. Don’t miss the “links” and “files” sections on the yahoo group.”

From Elizabeth Wenk’s 5th edition of her book, John Muir Trail: The Essential Guide to Hiking America’s Most Famous Trail, 2014.

Thanks, Dan! Dan Deamer also has a longer (and very well written) text document on obtaining a Yosemite National Park Permit Reservation for hiking the JMT. He posted about it on Facebook on 1/26/2016. The document is on Google Drive here. Another Crib Sheet to get on the JMT is that which contains vital contact information on everything JMT and it is kept here on climber.org – the authors are myself and Karpani Devi (who has twice contacted all phone numbers on the crib sheet to ensure current information. While there (at climber.org) check out Elizabeth’s Wenk’s JMT document there.

Deciphering the Inyo National Forest permit system for the JMT

Inga Askamit has done an excellent job explaining how to use the permit reservation system for Inyo National Forest to get a NOBO, MOBO or shifted NOBO permit. See here.

MOBO Starting Points for the JMT Heather Goudreau, known as [email protected], has published a nice short list of popular MOBO starting points for the JMT, entitled “JMT Section Hikes”. A full list of all 230 trailheads that can be used for a JMT hike are listed by D. J. Ayers in a files folder on the Yahoo JMT Group (see here and here). For each trailhead DJ lists the Administrative Agency responsible for getting permits there.

Annotated Bibliography Entries are presented from Latest to Earliest “Mt. Whitney lottery results for day hikes & overnight hikes are in!” Post says to check this link (pdf) for more detailed information. https://www.facebook.com/inyonf/posts/1012001488880542 Originally posted 3/24/2016 Thread started by Inyo National Forest 7 comment as of 3/24/2016 “NOBO from Horseshoe (Cottonwood Pass) ” – Tim Seymour (gunnahafta) starts the thread talking about his NOBO route and his most excellent YouTube video. https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/johnmuirtrail/conversations/topics/58533 Originally posted 3/20/2016 Thread started by gunnahafta (Tim Seymour) 22 comment as of 3/24/2016 “JMT Permits” – Ranger talks about Red Cones trailhead as an alternative to Duck Pass trailhead. Other Useful Facebook Hiking Groups if You Plan To Hike an Alternate JMT Hike Know about Altitude Acclimation before you do your JMT. Join this Facebook group (“Altitude Acclimation”) and read their FAQ which is kept in their Files tab. Read their pinned post. If you plan on doing a shifted SOBO, where you start farther north of Tuolumne Meadows, or if you plan on doing a shifted SOBO where you plan to start on the Theodore Solomons Trail (to the West of the JMT and join the JMT at Devil’s Postpile), these two Facebook Groups are worth joining. Theodore Solomons Trail Hikers https://www.facebook.com/groups/583973691738755/ 570 Members as of 1/1/2016

DESCRIPTION A group for anyone interested in the Theodore Solomons Trail. This is an unofficial trail through the Sierras that runs from Yosemite to Cottonwood Pass near Mt. Whitney. This group is a place to share trip reports or ask questions about the TST. The group has a research repository for containing organized links (in separate folders) using Yahoo Groups and is discussed here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/583973691738755/permalink/591920380944086/ Related groups: John Muir Trail - https://www.facebook.com/groups/2240988980/ John Muir Trail on Yahoo - https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/johnmuirtrail/info Sites: http://www.theodoresolomonstrail.org

Tahoe to Yosemite PCT Section Hikers https://www.facebook.com/groups/920451668029193/ 445 Members as of 1/1/2016

DESCRIPTION This group (Tahoe to Yosemite PCT Section Hikers) is for discussion and documentation (files, links and photos) as well as for event announcement for PCT Section Hikes between the PCT near Truckee, California and Tuolumne Meadows in Yosemite National Park. This group's official focus is on the PCT trail between Donner Pass and Tuolomne Meadows. The historical TYT (Tahoe to Yosemite Trail) that is not on the PCT was never finished and requires bushwhacking and serious navigational skills. This group may discuss the historical TYT but is not focused on it. Please be aware of this important distinction. Update note (11/23/2015): a new Facebook group is focused on this historical Tahoe to Yosemite Trail that does not utilize fully the PCT Section. It is located at https://www.facebook.com/groups/195597210775057/ -- It is called the Tahoe to Yosemite Trail Group.
