About the Lycée

LYCÉE FRANÇAIS DE CHICAGO

The Lycée Français de Chicago has been providing a world-class education to American and international students since 1995. Beginning at age 3 and continuing through grade 12, our students thrive in a unique multicultural, dual-language learning environment.

Instruction is provided in French and English from preschool through high school. Our students can prepare for the French Baccalaureate, an option in academic excellence giving our graduates a clear advantage in their choice of university, as well as later in life. The International Baccalaureate Diploma Program is offered in English in grades 9-12.

Through the rigorous curriculum and international exposure, Lycée students become equipped to meet the challenges of an increasingly global world, whether they are pursuing college admission, competitive careers, or their life endeavors.

OUR MISSION The Lycée Français de Chicago provides its students with a rigorous bilingual education in a dynamic and welcoming multicultural community. The Lycée draws on the best of the French, American and international educational systems preparing students to thrive at top universities throughout the world. French at its core, the Lycée’s education transforms students into global ambassadors, inspiring them to lead lives of purpose, responsibility and respect.

OUR NEW CAMPUS

A majestic four-story open atrium connects the school as one vibrant community – the heart and hub of our multi-cultural campus. Our environmentally-sustainable building was constructed with a green roof to save on energy costs. Our 3.8 acre campus provides ample room for two playgrounds, a soccer field, a basketball court, Flame athletics, plus parking and a private drive for student pick-up and drop-off. Above all, our new home is located in one of the city’s most dynamic, artistic and cultural neighborhoods where we can cultivate in-the- community partnerships for student learning.

LFC welcomes non-French-speaking students from Pre-K to 5th grade. Students entering grades 1 through 5 are placed in a welcoming class where they receive an intensive education in French before integrating into their regular classrooms.

INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE

The Lycée Français de Chicago is an IB World School authorized to deliver the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme in grades 11 and 12.

In grade 9 and 10, the Lycée offers a rigorous curriculum with the goal to prepare students to undertake the IB Diploma, a rigorous and renowned high school honors curriculum. It offers students a highly academic, culturally diverse and personally fulfilling education – one that prepares

students to enter top colleges and universities and to compete in today's fast-changing, global age.

These partnerships bring energy to our camps, help create new friendships, and make World Camp a truly international experience.

With camps supervised by teachers or other uniquely qualified personnel, our language immersion camps are meant to be fun, educational and tailored to the individual needs of each student.

World camp also offers afternoon Soccer Camps with Coach Joe Carver, and a variety of performing arts, science & technology camps.

Our Partners

To propose a truly professional language immersion program in various languages, we have built partnerships with local organizations offering year-round immersion programs in Arabic, Italian, German and Mandarin Chinese. These schools develop their own curriculum for these camps. All campers share the same Tuesday field trips and Friday at the beach experiences.

THE GERMAN INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL CHICAGO (GISC) GISC is an independent, not-for-profit, dual-language school with the curriculum mainly taught in German and a multi-cultural approach. Two camps are being offered: Die Forscher (4-5) and Die Abenteurer (6-10). LFC’s summer partnership with GISC dates back to 2008 and the first edition of World Camp. Contact: Petra Obritzberger, [email protected]

CHINAFRIENDS China Friends teaches Mandarin Chinese to children 18 months and up as well as adults. Two camps are open to students age 4-6 and 7-10. These camps provide our campers with a foundation for future learning, and cultivate their long-term interest in the language, culture and traditions of China. LFC’s summer partnership with China Friends started in 2009. Contact: ZhaoYi Liu, [email protected]

TURATH INSTITUTE OF ARAB ARTS AND CULTURE Organized in partnership with Turath Institute for Arab Arts and Culture in Chicago, this two- week summer camp is run by experienced native Arabic teachers. It is the perfect setting for your children to learn Arabic and explore its rich culture in a fun and interactive environment. The two-week camp includes a variety of indoor and outdoor activities such as arts, cooking and many others; all aiming to promote Arabic culture and language learning. LFC’s summer partnership with the Turath Institute started in 2010. Contact: Sahar Mawlawi, [email protected]

SCUOLA ITALIANA ENRICO FERMI (SIEF) SIEF opened on March 30th, 2016 in downtown Chicago in presence of the Italian Prime Minister, Matteo Renzi. The school currently offers a weekly Playgroup for children 0 to 3 years old in Italian and Saturday language & culture classes for Grade school children. The preschool opened in September and was the first Italian-American Bilingual School in the greater Chicagoland. LFC is proud to continue its partnership with SIEF again this year. Communication

IN-PERSON

In addition to an orientation meeting held in of June, parents have the opportunity to meet with their child’s camp supervisor the first day of every new session between 8:00 and 8:45am. Every day at pick-up time (3:00pm), your camp supervisor will be the one handing your child over to you. Do not hesitate to ask them questions at that time.

EMAIL Each supervisor or group leader will communicate with you by e-mail. They will send you the finalized weekly schedule of activities and other useful information related to field trips or daily activities. We are encouraging a direct and open communication between parents and teachers. Please feel free to contact your child’s camp teacher directly with any question or concern.

Camp administrators are here to answer your general questions about camp and ensure that you have the best summer experience at LFC. For any request or concern regarding daily camp life, we are recommending you contact your camp supervisor first, and the administration only if you feel that mediation is needed.

BLOG To allow families at home and abroad to share the fun, we have created a summer camp blog. This blog is updated daily with a short resume of the day, fun pictures and students’ projects. To protect the privacy of our campers the blog access is protected with a password. Access link: http://lfcsummerblog.edublogs.org/ Password: WorldCamp2017 2017 blog activation date: June 26, 2017

Health & Safety

Ensuring the safety of our campers is our priority. In addition to offering professional supervision by experienced teachers and an excellent ratio of 1 adult per 4 to 6 students, the following steps are being taken:

STAFF TRAINING Camps are supervised by experienced teachers and educators who work closely with

camp counselors to ensure a constant supervision of all students in all circumstances. All camp supervisors and camp counselors receive a summer camp guide with all our

safety policies (fire alarm, allergies, lockdown procedures, etc.). These policies are reminded in all staff meetings run by the director of the camp. Epi-pen boxes that include two epi-pens of different strength are located throughout the

school in our hallways, and all staff members are epi-pen trained.

WATER SAFETY The choice of our water locations is all about safety. The Hidden Creek Waterpark in Highland Park is extremely well run, and Montrose beach offers shallow water.

Children are tested on their first day at the water park Access to various pool areas is limited based on a color coding system. We have chosen not to test students aged 5 and younger, but rather limit them all to the

safest/most restricted part of the pool. Students aged 6 and up by 12/31/2017 will all be tested. We maintain a 1/4 to 1/5 counselor per student ratio. At the beach, Lifeguards are on duty and campers are allowed in shallow water

only. Water sports: waiver and special parents’ authorization required.

FIRST AID A first aid/emergency kit is prepared for every camp by our school nurse. All camps are taking this kit with them everywhere they go. This kit includes:

First Aid supplies Emergency forms of all students Individual Action plans & personal medicines or epi-pen if applicable Parent authorization to deliver treatment if needed. Medicine must come in

original packaging with prescription.

Values & Behavior

We expect all students participating in our camps to behave in a way that is in accordance to our values and policies.

OUR LYCÉE VALUES / LES VALEURS DU LYCÉE Respect Respect

Responsibility Responsabilité

Joy of learning Plaisir d’apprendre

BEHAVIOR / DISCIPLINE

Children enrolled in our program are expected to be well behaved, polite to their fellow campers, counselors, and other camp or school personnel, and to respect the property of others and of the school. For their own safety, campers are expected to be with their assigned camp groups at all times, and to follow instructions.

Recurring behavioral problems will be reported by the camp supervisor to the parents and to the camp director. At that point, the camp director may call for a meeting with the parents, the teacher and the camper.

Lycée Français reserves the right to deny a camper the opportunity to participate in camp if the child's social conduct or behavior is deemed unacceptable or posing danger to himself/herself or others.

TARDINESS & ABSENCES

To report an absence or a late arrival, please inform us by sending an e-mail to your camp supervisor, and copy to [email protected].

Please note that children are expected to arrive at camp no later than 9:00am. In case of tardiness, please take your child to the front desk. Such an occurrence must remain exceptional. On field trip days, students arriving after the departure of the group will not be accepted at camp that day.

At 8:45am, the hallways will close to non-employees, and we will start our regular drop-off process and daily activities.

Meals & Snacks

WHAT IS PROVIDED?

Snacks Morning snacks are provided each day for all campers. Snacks are also provided to

those children who stay for the after-camp program. All snacks are nut-free.

Lunches (June 26-August 18) Disposable Lunch Boxes are provided Monday through

Thursday by HandCut Foods catering, which is the Lycée Français hot lunch provider. Every Friday, Hand Cuts food offers a barbeque lunch at the beach.

Please note that alternative menu options, for example Vegetarian, are available upon request. Lunches are included in the price and are mandatory. Please do not send your child with his/her own lunch. All lunches are nut-free and pork-free.

Boxed lunches are provided June 26-August 18 for full-day, language immersion camps only; we do not provide lunch for any specialty camp.

WHAT IS NOT PROVIDED?

Water bottle: Keeping well hydrated is essential during hot summer days. To help us

accomplish this goal while being mindful of our environment, please provide your child with a refillable water bottle. Water fountains are available for refills in the hallways, and teachers will make sure that students drink and refill their water bottle on a regular basis throughout the day.

ALLERGIES AND DIETARY RESTRICTIONS

For children with very serious allergies or strict dietary restrictions, we are allowing parents to pack their own lunch and/or snacks. This is an exception that must be requested, and it must be accompanied by an Individual Health Plan form signed by a doctor; this form must then be returned to the camp administration. Your child’s teacher will make sure that camp counselors on their team are informed of the situation. If your child has severe allergies, we ask you to please make sure that any allergies or dietary restrictions have been listed online at the time of registration and we recommend that you give us a call at 773-665-8358 to discuss a plan of action.

Epi-pen boxes that include two epi-pens of different strength are located throughout the school in our hallways. All staff is trained to use epi-pens before the start of each new session.

What to Wear/Bring

WHAT SHOULD I WEAR?

Except on Tuesdays and Fridays, no uniform is required. Please send your child to camp with comfortable shoes for running and playing outside, and with the clothes of his/her choice.

Campers must wear their LFC Summer Camp t-shirt every Tuesday (field trip day) and every Friday (beach day).

On water park and beach days, children must come to camp wearing their swimsuit underneath their clothes. Wearing an aqua-shirt under your summer camp t-shirt is a good way to avoid over exposure to sun when at the beach or at the water park.

Please also be sure to thoroughly apply sunscreen before heading to camp every day, and on beach and water park days in particular.

WHAT SHOULD I BRING?

At the beginning of camp, please pack a bag (will be returned on the last day of camp) with the following items:

A change of clothes (for students age 5 and younger) A plastic cup An extra pair of shoes (not mandatory)

Please also pack a bag daily that will include:

Sunscreen Hat Water bottle A towel and a pair of underwear on water park and beach days (so that children can

change afterwards) Any other item that your camp supervisor may request

Please mark all items with your child’s name. Camp Supervisors are likely to add items to this list based on age (blanket, nap time friends) or activities (eg. bike camp). They will inform you by e-mail of any additional request.
