The 1st Annual Creative Activities and Research Symposium

Welcome to the 1st Annual Creative Activities and Research Symposium

Located in the University Library

Thank you for joining us in this celebration of the different activities that take place throughout the summer here at Cal Poly Pomona both by our students and by visiting students participating in various research programs on campus.

It is the goal of the Office of Undergraduate Research to highlight the research students do throughout the year and to provide them with opportunities to share their work with the campus-wide community.

Today, for your pleasure, we have included not only research that takes place on campus, but creative activities as well. While research, STEM, and the social sciences provide us with the understanding of how our world works, creative activities and the humanities provide us with the understanding of how we interpret and understand the world around us.

It is our privilege and pleasure to host and present the 1st Annual Creative Activities and Research Symposium to the Cal Poly Pomona community, and we look forward to this and the many symposiums that are to come.

Sincerely

Winny Dong

Keynote Address University Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs, Dr. Sylvia Alva

Prior to this appointment, Dr. Alva last served as the Dean of the College of Health and Human Development at CSU Northridge. Dr. Alva has been part of the California public higher education system for more than three decades, since her undergraduate years at CSU Los Angeles.

At CSU Nothridge, Dr. Alva assisted in developing a $22 million National Institutes of Health grant proposal that was funded to build the research infrastructure to prepare more diverse and underrepresented students to enter the biomedical fields. She was the co-principal investigator on a $2 million grant from the Department of Education to increase the success and completion rates of Hispanic and diverse students in the college’s graduate programs.

Dr. Alva earned both a master's and doctoral degrees in psychology from UCLA.

Please join us in this unique opportunity to meet our new university provost, and glean insights about the importance of research and scholarly activity on campus.

Dr. Sylvia Alva became the Cal Poly Pomona Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs on August 3rd and is the first woman to serve in that role.
