General Information

The Ottawa River

The head waters of the Ottawa River begin in Lake Capimitchigama in central Quebec and flows west to Lake Timiskaming. From there the Ottawa River is the border between Ontario and Quebec for its 1271 Kilometers. It drains 146, 300 km2 of Canadian Wilderness which makes it the perfect big water and big wave whitewater destination in North America. The Ottawa River has a rich heritage that was instrumental in helping open up the vast Canadian wilderness for the early European explores as well as it was source of life for the area’s first nations people.

Competition Features

Surface Competition The Championships will be held on the Garberator wave. The Garberator wave is located at the Lorne Rapid on the Ottawa River. This dynamic wave features one of the best launching platforms for freestyle kayaking's most spectacular moves. This is truly a venue for going big!

Squirt Boat Competition 2015 Squirt Boat World Championships will be held at the powerful eddy line at McCoy’s Rapid known as Smoothie. This powerful eddy line is world renown for amazing down time with perfectly glassy water both upstream and in the eddy itself.

Time Zone The Rocher Fendu section of the Ottawa River is located one hour west of Canada’s National Capital, Ottawa in the Township of Whitewater Region and is in the Eastern Standard Time Zone (EST). EST is five hours behind Greenwich Mean Time (GMT-5). During the summer months, when daylight savings time is observed, EDT is moved one hour forward, while GMT remains the same (GMT-4).

Climate The end of August is typically sunny skies with warmer weather during the day (25 Celsius) but can cool off significantly in the evenings (10-15 Celsius) , however it’s not uncommon for there still to be hot weather 30 degrees plus during the final days of summer.

Electricity Canada's electrical supply and electrical outlets (sockets, wall plugs) are the same as those found in the United States. The electrical supply is 110 Volts and 60 Hertz (cycles per second).

Telephones The international dialing code for the Canada is +1 (or 00 1). Emergency calls within the Canada is dial 911.

Visas Some athletes and teams will need entry visas to visit Canada . To aid in the visa application process, CanoeKayak Canada will draft a personalized letter of invitation for athletes and delegates, who will add this to the materials they present to the consulate or embassy. To obtain an invitation letter, the federation may write to: James Cartwright jcartwright@canoekayak.ca

Customs Quotas & Regulations Limits are set on the import of certain goods into Canada. All passengers arriving on an international flight will be asked to declare which goods they are bringing, and may be taxed on their items.

International Airports The recommended airport for arrivals is YOW / Ottawa International Airport. This is located only 1.5 hours from the host site at the Wilderness Tours Resort. Directions from the Ottawa Airport can be found here Alternatively, Montreal – Pierre Elliot Trudeau International Airport (YUL) is approximately 3.5 hrs from the event site and does have a large number of international arrivals. Accommodation & Lodging Options Wilderness Tours is the location of the athletes village. With entertainment every evening, complimentary camping from August 1st for all accredited personnel, complimentary river shuttles from August 16th to September 6th, this is the place to be for the 2015 Championships.

Competitors Athletes Village Competitors and accredited staff will want to stay at the Athletes Village that is located at Wilderness Tours Resort. Camping is complimentary and a daily meal package is $25/day. Athletes and accredited personnel can stay at the Wilderness Tours site without a meal package. Please book your accommodation and meal packages early as we do have a limited number of cabins available.

Spectators All non-athletes staying on Wilderness Tours Property must be on a meal program. Spectator Meal programs start is $39 / day for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Week long meal package cost is $205 / person (14 meals) Spectators can register on the spectator registration page of this website. Wilderness Tours Adventure Resort has the best accommodations for paddlers in the Ottawa Valley and is the location of the athlete's village. Wilderness Tours does have a limited number of accommodations available. To ensure the athlete experience is paramount we can currently only accept athlete related bookings until June 15th, 2015. Family travel with accredited athletes are allowed to book accommodations before the June 15th release to the general public.

Rental Cars All of the major car rental companies are located at both the Ottawa and Montreal Airports. If renting a vehicle for your stay, it’s recommended that you pick up and drop off at these locations. The nearest rental locations from the Wilderness Tours Resort are in the City of Pembroke 44km. There will be daily shuttles from the event site to the river and it will be possible to forgo rental vehicles if so desired.

Wilderness Tours – Garberator Shuttle Service There are complimentary daily shuttles to and from the paddlers’ village to the river beginning August 16th until September 6th.

Accreditation Accreditation for the 2015 ICF Canoe Freestyle World Championships will be $200 CAD per athlete or team support personnel. Accreditation will be managed via the ICF ISIS system. Entries for ICF Canoe Freestyle events are managed in two steps:

Opening Ceremony Beachburg, Ontario Sunday, August 30th, 2015 The 2015 ICF Opening Ceremonies will be held at the fairgrounds in Beachburg, Ontario. They will feature a fantastic evening for the athletes, local community and distinguished guests and spectators. The evening will entail:

Parade through the town of Beachburg Athlete's parade Oh Canada Eh performance Marching Bands Live Local Music Performance by Adrenaline Rush (hip hop/rap) Fiddlers and Step dance Aboriginal Canadian performances Banquet Dinner

This evening is a celebration of Canadian and Ottawa Valley Culture and Heritage.

Official Training Schedule Official Training for teams will start Monday, August 24th, 2015. Here are some points to note for training:

Training will run from 8 am until 5 pm every day until the start of the competition at Garberator, Tuesday, August 31st.

Outside these times the wave will be considered open to all kayakers, athletes and recreational paddlers alike.

Garberator will be lit up every night for unofficial open training When all teams and competitors have been registered the official training schedule will be posted on this page.
