AllIson CowAnSecond Season At Cornell • George Mason ‘05

Women’s Soccer Assistant Coach

Q: As a second-year head coach, what are some of the goals you have set for your program?

A: Ultimately, the goal for the program is to win an Ivy League title. That’s why I was hired, that’s why I took the job, and sooner we can do that, the better. Obviously, I also want to make sure that all of our players maintain high grade point averages, gradu-ate in four years and have outstanding careers in whatever field they choose.

Q: What is the ideal player for the Cornell soccer program?

A: The ideal player is one who is athletic. What has happened over the last few years in the Ivy League is that we’ve tended to get more thoughtful, technical players, and not the more athletic ones. What we’re looking for is someone who can run farther and faster and jump higher, but without sacrificing the technical skills needed to compete at this level. We also like to have a really well-balanced recruiting class, so we’re always looking for the artists and the engines, the little, fast, quick girls and the strong destroyers. For us, it’s all about bal-ance, but the underlying theme is a high level of athleticism.

Q: What needs to happen within the program to finish on top of the Ivy League?

A: Cornell women’s soccer had a rich history in the

1990s of being one of the top programs in the Ivy League, and in the early 2000s, they got in this rut of ending up at the bottom of the league. When I started here, we noticed a lot of it was mental, from the neck up. We’ve really focused on building con-fidence and a winning attitude. The second thing we’ve lacked in the past has been leadership that believes in the goal of winning an Ivy League title. Finally, recruiting is a big piece of that. I consider myself a strong recruiter, and with me coming to Cornell, I’m able to recruit all over North America to find the best players that fit the Cornell profile. In women’s soccer, the Ivy League is won by a different team, and it’s the ones that bring in the best recruits who win the title. It’s really clear that if you can get your confidence and leadership and have the right chemistry and bring in quality recruits, then you have a chance to win an Ivy League title.

Q: Talk about the commitment from the administra-tion to assisting in bringing an Ivy League title in women’s soccer back to Cornell.

A: It’s been amazing. I’ve had amazing support from the athletic department, going above and beyond to make sure that we have outstanding practice facili-ties, an outstanding 6,000 square foot weight room dedicated to varsity athletes, a strength and condi-tioning coach who works directly with our team...

We have academic support and athletic training support. The support system here at Cornell is sec-ond to none. Berman Field is an absolutely beautiful place to play. We’ve got all the tools we need to get where we want to go.

2008 Cornell Big Red Women’s Soccer

As Cornell women’s soccer coach Danielle LaRoche embarks on her second season directing the program, the differences between her first and second campaigns are clearly noticeable.

“Last year, I met the team on August 21, and we played our first game 10 days later,” she reflected. “We had no idea what the freshmen could do, or what the returners could do, and we had a freshman goalkeeper, so we had very limited expectations.

“This year, we’re coming with a different mindset. With a nationally ranked recruiting class, with the team training under our fitness program and having a year with our defensive scheme, we have high expectations for this team - we expect to win.”

After having time to settle into the position, the roster has also settled, as 13 returning play-ers will join nine newcomers as the Big Red prepares for the 2008 season. Despite having only 22 players, what some might consider to be a lack of depth has instead turned into a positive for the program.

“We have a smaller team than last year, but I feel like our team is deeper,” LaRoche said. “The incoming class has brought a little bit more athleticism, which hasn’t been there in the past. Last year’s squad was a very technical team, they knew soccer well, but they lacked athleticism. The incoming class brings in more athletically without sacrificing any of that technical ability. I think we’ve struck a good balance this year with that.”

The returners and newcomers will have roughly a month and six non-league games to mesh before the Ivy League slate begins against Columbia on Sept. 26. The always-optimistic LaRoche has her sights set on making the other teams around the league take notice, both before and during the slate of conference matches.

“Our schedule is one that I think we can do very well with, and the Ivy League race is wide open, as it is every year,” she said. “I think we have put together some of the tools that we can really compete and win quite a few league matches. I’m very excited, and our expectations are very high. I think we’re going to be a team that’s going to be a winning team, and it’s going to be sooner, rather than later.”

pair of talented freshmen. Junior Eva Dixon, a two-time All-Ivy honoree, returns for her third season after struggling with injuries a year ago, while sophomore Natalie Zandt, who also missed a portion of last season due to injury, also returns healthy for her second season.

“My expectations for the forwards are to get the lion’s share of the goals this season,” said LaRoche. “I think last year, we were really dependent on the midfield to get our offensive produc-tion, and I think this year, we’re looking for more production and more confidence from our players up top.”

Dixon, who scored four goals and had one assist for nine points as a freshman, was limited to just one assist last season, but has done well in the off-season with increased strength and fitness training. Zandt, meanwhile, burst onto the scene last season with a flair for the dramatic, as two of her three goals were overtime game-winners in victories over Hartford and Niagara.

“Eva’s healthy and ready to go, and been playing soccer all summer out in California,” LaRoche said of the junior tri-captain. “Natalie is recovering from her knee injury, and it looks like she’s go-ing to be healthy too. She might not be 100 percent when camp opens up, but by the time the Ivy League season starts, she’ll be ready to go.”

Joining that pair are freshmen Brook Chang and Samantha Wright. Chang, a highly decorated player out of Northern Virginia, can fill in either up top or as an attacking midfielder, while Wright is a dynamic threat who can also see significant action on defense if needed.

“Brook is a phenomenal, dangerous player, and whichever role we put her in, she’s going to make waves,” LaRoche said. “She’s someone that finds passing lanes really well and isn’t afraid to attack a defender. Sam is one of those players who is going to be dangerous no matter where we put her. She is so dynamic, we just have to figure out where she’s going to make the most damage. I think with the addition of Brook and Sam and having Eva and Natalie back healthy, it’ll give us the much-needed depth that we haven’t had in the past.”

MidFiELdWhile the Big Red loses several players from last year’s midfield, the squad also returns several

key players who made major contributions last season. Headlining the group is junior Kala Neilson and sophomore Lena Russomagno, both of whom were regulars in the starting lineup thoughout most of the Ivy League season. Also returning is Megan Joerger, one of just two seniors on the team, junior Rebecca Flewelling and sophomore Samantha Wiener.

Neilson made seven starts last season for the Big Red and appeared in 12 games, holding down the defensive midfield role, a position she is expected to again fill this season. Russomagno, mean-while, was the Big Red’s top scorer a year ago, scoring 14 points on six goals and two assists on her way to All-Ivy accolades. Joerger appeared in 10 games last season for the Big Red, while Flewel-ling, who spent her first two seasons splitting time between the women’s soccer and women’s ice hockey teams but now is focusing solely on soccer, played in 14 of the 16 games last season. Wiener, who walked onto the team during preseason practice, slowly worked her way into the rotation and appeared in nine games, a year that culminated with her first collegiate goal in the season finale

against Columbia. “Kala has been our fittest player in the offseason and has gained some strength in the weight

room, and we think she’s going to come in and again settle that defensive midfield role and win balls in the air,” LaRoche said. “Lena had a phenomenal spring, and is nursing a little bit of a knee injury herself, but she should be 100 percent by the time practice begins, and we’re looking for her to really spark the attack.”

Joining the five returners in the middle of the field are a trio of newcomers, each of whom brings different attributes to the lineup. Kelsey MacDonald and Abigail Apistolas, club teammates with Brook Chang in Northern Virginia, join Abageal Vonderweidt as new blood in the middle. Mac-Donald, a short, scrappy player, is capable of bringing a quick spark to the lineup, while Apistolas was a member of the state champion team in Virginia in 2005. Apistolas has quick, shifty feet and the ability to beat players off the dribble and could slide into the playmaking role in the center of the midfield. Vonderweidt, a Southern California native, is a similar player to Russomagno, with both players being tall and fast and capable of turning the corner on the flanks.

“Kelsey just has so much energy, she just makes things happen when she’s in the game,” La-Roche said. “I think if we put Brook Chang in the midfield, she is capable of having the same type of impact that Lena had last year, and both of the Abbys have the potential to come in and stand out as Lena did last year.

“We have a lot of depth and a lot of options, so we’re really excited about our midfield,” La-Roche said.

dEFEnSEGraduation took its toll on the back line, as both of last season’s starting center backs received

their degrees in May, leaving a gaping hole in the middle of the defense that needs to be filled. Still, both flank players return in juniors Emily Kuhn and Elizabeth Scully in addition to senior tri-captain Whitney Stich and sophomores Katie Hayes and Cristina Law. That group will be joined by sopho-more transfer Jules Lapsa and freshman Sidra Bonner, with the potential to be joined by Wright if needed.

Kuhn started all 16 games at left back last year for the Big Red, chipping in with an assist on one of Russomagno’s three goals against Lafayette for her first collegiate point. Scully, the other returning starter, shifted into the center of the back line this spring and showed signs of making a seamless transition.

“Emily is another player who had a really strong spring season and has been training really hard, while Elizabeth did an amazing job in the center this spring and we’re excited to see how she develops in that role,” LaRoche said.

Likely to join Scully in the middle of the defense is Bonner, another physically imposing pres-ence. At 5-11, the Colorado native has the combination of size and skills to give opposing forwards problems. Additionally, Lapsa, a transfer from Davidson, could also crack the opening day lineup.

GOALkEEPERSThe team’s overall lack of depth was most evident in goal last season, with then-freshman

Jodi Palmer as the only true goalkeeper on the roster. Without a capable backup, field players were pressed into service when Palmer missed time due to injury late in the season. With the return of Palmer for her sophomore season and the addition of a pair of talented goalkeepers, those days are a thing of the past.

As a freshman, Palmer learned on the job after being thrown directly into the fire from day one. She responded well, posting a pair of shutouts on the season, but her biggest strides came during the spring when, with the departure of a pair of starting center backs, she became the vocal leader a young defense sorely needed.

“Jodi has really stepped into that leadership role this spring, organizing the defense and own-ing the box,” LaRoche said. “All the things that we would hope a junior goalkeeper would do, she was already doing them during her second semester of her freshman year. We think she’ll continue that progression, and the job is hers to lose right now.”

Pushing the incumbent will be a pair of freshmen from opposite coasts. Megan Bartlett joins the program after playing her club soccer for a prominent Southern California side, playing regularly in national championship matches with Slammers FC. Also in the mix is Kelly Murphy, a native of Duxbury, Mass., who plays a much more different style than either Palmer or Bartlett.

“Megan was the last one to join the incoming class, and she’s a little bit of a diamond in the rough,” LaRoche said. “She has wonderful hands, reads the game well and is a great shot-stopper. Kelly is completely different from the both of them, having an imposing, physical presence and is very vocal and attack-minded. She’ll give us more size and strength in the goal, where Jodi and Megan give us a little bit more finesse.”
