Atlanta is the ideal location to explore the themes of Convergence and Crossing Lines. Our city was born as a railroad terminus and grew as streetcar lines branched out to create urban neighborhoods. Geography, history, and social change have always converged in Atlanta, shaping it into the vibrant, diverse city it is today. Even today, those original streetcar neighborhoods are being revitalized by projects like the Atlanta BeltLine and Ponce City Market. Atlantans are inventing new and better ways for urban living.

We can’t wait to show off Atlanta, and we’re excited about our 2014 SEGD Conference program. Together, we’ll explore the factors that are reshaping and even revolutionizing our design practices. From the rapid integration of technology to the heightened importance of collaboration and strategic partnerships, being a designer today is not only challenging, but immensely rewarding!

Settle in, make yourself at home, and join the conversation. In the next few days, we promise you the opportunity for new connections, inspirational idea, and a thought-provoking exploration of how we can cross disciplines, geographies, cultures, and technologies to create new experiences.

Stephen Carlin Chair, 2014 SEGD Conference Cooper Carry Inc.

CONVERGENCE AND PLACEMAKING: FROM SIGNS AND STOREFRONTS TO IMMERSIVE URBAN EXPERIENCES The idea of urban graphics has come a long way since the monumental neon signs and painted graphics that punctuated American main streets throughout the 20th century. Now the singular and civic-minded linear cityscape has morphed into an often boundary-less and media-centric experience. Martin Treu, author of Signs, Streets, and Storefronts, will outline the genesis of classic and historical placemaking and how it still applies to the city today. A panel discussion will focus on how current Atlanta projects are embracing the new traditions of experience design and placemaking.

Speakers Martin Treu, Treu Design Jill Ayers, Design 360 Gretchen Coss, Gallagher & Associates

KEYNOTE: WAYSHOWING / WAYFINDING / WAYLOSINGFinding one’s way on the Earth’s surface is a basic human urge. Wayfinding goals are basically the same today as they were a millennium ago: finding a destination, finding the way from there to elsewhere, and finding the way back to the origin. The context however, has changed. Good wayfinding in today’s built environments presupposes good wayshowing, which at least in principle, eliminates bad waylosing. Good wayshowing is user centered. It builds on an understanding of the strategies we all use (but don’t know that we use) when trying to navigate in an unknown land. By the way, is waylosing always bad?

Speaker Per Mollerup Swinburne University of Technology

11:15am –12:00pm

By now, several generations of designers have participated in the process that combines placemaking, information design, wayfinding, and experiential design. KEYNOTE: MORE LURING THAN LEADINGSignage systems are more than wayshowing. They can help to define the location, create a sense of atmosphere, and help visitors find their destination subconsciously. Signage systems communicate the identity of a place using several tools: words in space, color in rooms, and a graphical language that refers to site, architecture, history, context, and last but not least, a perfected information system.
