Metal Jewelry DesignThis class emphasizes building basic/intermediate knowledge of jewelry design and construction. Beginning students will design their own jewelry and construct their design pieces using the fundamental techniques of soldering, sawing, filing, finishing, and basic bezel setting. Lectures, demonstrations, and handouts will provide the basis of any technique needed. Intermediate students will progress through more advanced techniques (forging, cold connections, etching, etc). Jewelry will be made from metal sheet and wire. Brass, copper, and tools are provided. *New students need to attend the first class for a safety discussion and a materials list.

Metal Jewelry LabVolunteers monitor the lab. In order to participate in the labs stu-dents must know safety procedures. Students must have taken 3 or more quarters of metal classes at Studio One or have equivalent proficiency. No storage space is available. Studio One facilities can not be used for production work.

In this class a variety of simple casting techniques are presented in the first session. The remainder of the class will be focused on the “lost Wax Casting”. The principle tasks will be wax carving, wax sculpture and cast metal finishing. No prior Casting experience required, however knowledge of rudimentary jewelry fabrication will be useful. Students will learn the basics of stop frame animation using white boards and/or by developing their own simple clay figures using a digital camera and iMovie. First we will develop our char-acters and initial storyboard on paper. Next we will translate our work onto the whiteboard, (and/or) into clay, and learn to animate our ideas using the frame-by-frame technique. We will also develop an original “sound story” for the finish animation. Participants have the option to work individually or share their workflows and collaborate in groups. All levels welcome.

Film and Documentary

WorkshopIn this workshop you will create a short film or documentary. Students will develop skills of observation, description, association, selection, abstraction, synthesis and exhibition. Learn how to use “Final Cut Pro” software to edit your films. We will use a methodology of analysis of frag-ments of documentary film from the elements provided in class and in the readings. In parallel, a script process is used that acts as a witness to exemplify the complex process of the creation of a short film. You will need to bring your own camera or iPhone.

Photography

Learn the basic of transforming images in the digital realm. This class will show you the basics of Photoshop and Lightroom tools and language. We will cover layers and how to transfer your image into the software from your computer. If you have a laptop or if you prefer to learn on your own lap-top please bring to class. Our lab is a Macintosh Lab. All levels welcome.

Having trouble getting your digital cam-era to give you the results you want? Learn all the fea-tures and controls of your digital camera. We’ll dis-cuss making better creative decisions, how to con-trol  lighting,  movement`  and  flash.  Basic  image  editing  software    will      be  discussed.  Bring  your  camera  manu-al and questions to class for individual help. The Instruc-tor will tailor advice on editing software to the software the students already use. You’ll also learn to add imag-es to both and how to maintain your site. If you have a laptop or if you prefer to learn on your own lap-top please bring to class. Our lab is a Macintosh Lab.

In this workshop we will watch a variety of films and you will learn how to evaluate cinema through a critics lens observing different genres, and how to view movies from different perspectives. We will also discuss and learn about the social concepts and meanings as envisioned and presented by the directors. We will discuss how current social stories are represented in a timeless manor in these films. At the end of this course you will be able to see films from different perspectives and have the ability to approach current films from a different angle.

Fusing and Slumping GlassThis class is an introduction to the wonderful world of kiln-formed glass. Layers of compatible glass are fused together to create artistic objects including jewelry, tiles, and picture frames. Glass can also be slumped into or over molds to create barrettes, small plates, and votive candle holders. Glass cutting, compatibility testing, use of “frits” (crushed glass) and metal inclusions are among the techniques presented and Information on the use of kilns and firing processes is also offered. More advanced projects will be available to continuing students. A supply list will be given out at the first class meeting.

Glass Fusing & BeyondLearn how to play with this magical material. This is a hands-on creative glass workshop where you can experiment with glass,metal inclusions,powdered enamels, frits and string-ers. Participants will learn how to cut and design glass to be fused (melted together in a kiln) and then slumped (sagged into a mold). Create several functional and non-functional works. Volunteers assist as monitors to set-up the chemistry, observe and break down the Darkroom. Our facilities are available to the community for black and white film de-veloping and printing no larger than 11” x 14”. Prior to registration, and lab use, new participants must have a brief over the phone or e-mail interview with the photo coordinator. At the time of your initial arrival, the monitor will give you an orientation that will include Studio One’s safety procedures and participant protocol. Bring your own photo paper and film. No production or commercial work is allowed. Lab time is purchased in 20-hour blocks of time. Patrons use time within 6 months. $90 for 20

hours for Oakland residents.

Participants who don’t need instructions are welcome to work on their individual projects. A lab monitor is present for set-up/break-down and to ensure lab safety. You must have taken Stained Glass class for 3 sessions at studio one. New participants who have extensive knowledge of the safety and prep procedure can meet with the glass coordinator to waive the requirements. Once in the lab, it is important to follow any directions stated, posted, and respect other students artwork. There is no storage space. You must provide your own glass. There are Studio One stock tools.

Participants must be well versed on the process of fabricating glass pieces, the proper use and care of molds for slumping, and have taken 3 or more quarters of Glass Fusing and Slumping at Studio One. Or you can substantiate your skill and knowledge with the glass coordinator before the first Lab session. Safety proce-dures on how to operate a kiln is important because the monitor does not offer instructions. Participants must have your own glass & tools. Please, no production work and there is no storage.

We’ll focus on drawing and painting plants, fruit and vegetables. You will have the option to bring in your own objects and the instructor will provide others. We’ll learn to capture a likeness, create shading with pencil or paint and make objects look 3-dimensional. We’ll also consider ways to add our own interpre-tations through backgrounds, and an illuminated letter or word, and consider and why this art form is increasingly seen in calendars, greeting cards and spe-cialty stores. This Figure class features the por-trait and costumed figure. The class begins with warm-ups, then a long pose for the evening. The instructor will present demon-strations covering paint mixing, drawing the figure and block-in, composition, and using color and values for dramatic effect. Oil paint is suggested; odorless thin-ner only. This is a costumed figure class and the emphasis is on color, costume and narrative. We will work from costumed and nude models, both male and female, using short and long poses. This tutorial will cover a variety of approaches and materials. The class will be structured for both beginners and continuing artists who love drawing the human form. Continual instructor demonstrations and individual help will be provided. Emphasis will be on movement and proportion. For the first class please bring a large drawing pad 18” X 24”, vine charcoal, a variety of pencils and tools of your choice. Comev explore different patterns and rhythms through mu-sic and ethnic dance from various cultures around the world. Exciting music from cultures you may not be familiar with, and dances that will encourage you to move in ways that will seem unfamiliar at first, but will soon become natural. “Burnished Pottery” WorkshopStudents will learn the ancient decorating technique of burnishing a finish onto a Ceramic piece. This workshop is recommended for students who are participating in the “pit fired” clay workshop. Please bring your “leather hard” pot if you have one. You will have an opportunity to make a ceramic vessel and finish burnishing it at home if you like. All pieces will be fired before the “Pit Fire” workshop. Please bring an old towel, polished stone or small spoon to this class.

Ceramics classes are held workshop style, so if you have any ideas you have been thinking over, now would be the time to express them in clay. CIT Program Mandatory Training Week

This is a week long training course held during the first two weeks of summer camp for any potential Summer 2019 CITs. Any interested CIT must sign up for at least one of these two weeks to be a CIT throughout the summer. Participants are welcome to participate in both weeks, one week meets the minimum requirement.

This internships guides students to become important assets to employers. Students will assist teachers in a classroom setting, and learn invaluable leadership, organizational, interpersonal, and customer service skills. This program is geared toward 12 to 15 year old, and upon graduation each student receives an official certificate of completion. Participants must attend at least one of the Mandatory Training Weeks.

First we will develop our characters and initial storyboard on paper. We will also develop an original “sound story” for the finish animation. Participants have the option to work individually or share their workflows and collaborate groups. All levels welcome.
