Installing PCI Hotline

The first step is to install PCI Hotline into a PCI slot in the computer. To do this, follow these instructions:

1. Turn off the computer and all peripheral devices connected to it.

2. Unplug the computer power cord from the wall outlet.

3. Remove the computer’s cover. Refer to the computer’s user guide for instruc-tions.

4. Remove the screw securing the expansion slot cover behind one of the com-puter’s available PCI expansion slots. Lift out the expansion slot cover, asshown below.

Caution: Always discharge static electricity before handling PCI

Hotline. Static electricity can be discharged by touching agrounded metal structure or by using any commercially avail-able grounding strap.

➠ Important: Make sure the computer slot chosen is a PCI slot.PCI slots are smaller than ISA slots and nearly always white incolor. ISA slots are generally black in color.

Page 6: Table of Contents - net2phoneweb.net2phone.com/partnerships/distributors/product/dialup/pdf/pcihotlineug.pdfInternet call to resume. Single-Line Installation When using PCI Hotline

☞ Note: The position of the expansion slots in your computer maydiffer from the illustrations shown in this guide, which depictsthe slots in a vertical position. Regardless of the position of theslots, the installation steps remain the same. Please refer to thecomputer’s user guide for more information about the expansionslot configuration of the computer.

Connecting the Computer

There are two methods to connect a computer to PCI Hotline. Select the Internetconnection used and follow the directions in that section:

If using a cable, DSL, or ISDN modem, or have two phone lines in the home(one for the phone and one for the modem), refer to the “Dual-LineInstallation” section of this chapter.

If using a standard analog modem to connect to the Internet and the phoneis connected through the modem to the same wall outlet, refer to the“Single-Line Installation” section of this chapter.

Dual-Line Installation

To connect PCI Hotline in a dual-line configuration:

1. Ensure the modem being used is connected correctly.

2. Plug the other end of the cable connected to the phone in the port labeled“Phone” on the back of PCI Hotline.

3. Plug one end of the phone (RJ-11) cable included with PCI Hotline in the portlabeled “Line” on the back of PCI Hotline.

Page 8: Table of Contents - net2phoneweb.net2phone.com/partnerships/distributors/product/dialup/pdf/pcihotlineug.pdfInternet call to resume. Single-Line Installation When using PCI Hotline

4. Plug the other end of the phone cable to a phone wall port. The correct con-nection configuration for using PCI Hotline in a dual-line installation isshown in the figure below.

☞ Note: PCI Hotline must connect to the telephone outlet on thewall in the home or office. If it is not connected, calls cannot bemade unless the computer is turned on, and the phone will notring on incoming calls.

I-Phone Switch

In a dual-line installation, an analog call can come in while the user is on an Internetcall. If this occurs, an audible tone sounds, indicating an incoming analog call.

To answer the call, press the pound key (#) twice on the telephone handset. TheInternet call is placed on hold while answering the analog call.

As long as the first call initiated is the Internet call, the user can freely switch backand forth between the two calls. If the first call was an analog call, and the userswitches to Internet call mode by pressing the pound key twice, the analog call willbe dropped.

Single-Line Installation

When using PCI Hotline with a modem that has one RJ-11 connector, the phoneconnected to PCI Hotline cannot make outgoing analog phone calls.

To connect PCI Hotline in a single-line configuration:

1. Plug the other end of the cable connected to the phone in the port labeled“Phone” on the back of PCI Hotline (see figure on the next page).

2. Plug one end of the phone (RJ-11) cable included with PCI Hotline in the portlabeled “Line” on the back of PCI Hotline.

Troubleshooting

This chapter covers some of the problems that may be encountered when usingPCI Hotline, and solutions to overcome them.

I installed the hardware and was in the middle of installing the softwaredrivers but the device was installed as a generic PCI device rather than thePCI Hotline Card. How do I fix the problem?

For Windows 98, 98 SE, and Me:

1. Right-click My Computer, then select Properties and Device Manager.

2. Navigate to the generic device and click Remove.

3. Restart the computer. Windows should see the new hardware.

4. Re-install the drivers as described in “Installing the Software Drivers.”

For Windows 2000 and XP:

1. Right-click My Computer, then select Properties, Hardware, and DeviceManager.

2. Navigate to the generic device and click Remove.

3. Restart the computer. Windows should see the new hardware.

4. Re-install the drivers as described in “Installing the Software Drivers.”

When I attempt to run the Dialer Audio Setup Wizard, there is no soundthat plays over my analog telephone.

There are a few potential areas to check:

Verify the telephone connected to the card is analog (not digital, like the kindsused in office environments) and that it is operational. To verify the phone isoperational, connect it to a standard wall jack and listen for a dial tone.

Verify the RJ-11 connecter is securely connected to both the telephone andto PCI Hotline port labeled “Phone.”

Page 34: Table of Contents - net2phoneweb.net2phone.com/partnerships/distributors/product/dialup/pdf/pcihotlineug.pdfInternet call to resume. Single-Line Installation When using PCI Hotline

Verify the PCI Hotline driver software is running. The driver software is aseparate program, independent of the Dialer, and it must be running for thehardware to communicate with the Dialer software. To verify, ensure theWizard icon is visible in the taskbar. If it isn’t displayed, double-click theWizard icon that on the desktop to launch the software.

I picked up the phone to place a call but there was no dial tone.

Ensure the phone cable (RJ-11) connected to the phone is plugged into the“Phone” port on the back of PCI Hotline, not the “Line/Modem” port.

Ensure the PCI Hotline software is loaded by verifying that the Wizard iconis visible in the taskbar. If it isn’t displayed, double-click the Wizard iconthat on the desktop to launch the software.

 Check all connections.

I can place calls over the Internet but can’t make or receive regular calls.

Ensure PCI Hotline is connected to an available phone outlet.

Ensure a standard phone cable (RJ-11) is used to connect to the“Line/Modem” port and the available phone outlet.

The sound quality of my call is poor and there are times when the connec-tion drops out entirely.

This problem could be caused by a poor connection between the computer andInternet Service Provider (ISP). Disconnecting and reconnecting to the Internetmay improve performance.

I have placed a phone call and I can’t hear the person I’ve called.

Check the Windows volume is set to an appropriate level in the configura-tion settings for the particular sound card.

Run the Audio Setup Wizard for the Dialer to ensure it is set up properly.

Check the volume levels on the Dialer.

I would like to complete a call, but the Dialer indicates that it is offline.

Attempt a call and the Dialer will automatically go online.

33Troubleshooting

I have a new account number I would like to use with my PCI Hotline. Howdo I enter it in the software?

In the Dialer software. click File, then Change Account, and enter the newaccount number.

I don’t understand how all of the features of the Dialer work. Is there a doc-ument I can refer to?

Yes, click the “Help” menu and then select Help or press the F1 key on the key-board.
