HYDRAULIC HOSE OVERVIEW & SELECTION GUIDE

Hose selection

Users often select hydraulic hoses based on the working pressure of the system. However other factors can dramatically affect hose assembly life. The following should be considered in the selection process:

Single wire braid versus double wire braidUsing high-tensile wire, single wire braid hoses will often have adequate working pressure for many systems. However, if used outside, cover damage that exposes the braid will result in corroded wires and hose failure. An extra braid separated by a rubber layer greatly extends hose life at a small premium.

Compact hoses versus standard hoseModern manufacturing equipment allows single and double wire braided hoses to be manufactured to exacting tolerances. This process control has allowed the development of products with thinner covers and tubes, resulting in products with reduced weight, increased fl exibility and, most importantly for OEM customers, reduced cost. However there is a trade-off. Thinner covers mean that the hoses are more easily damaged by abrasion and, as noted above, if the braid is exposed, it will result in an early failure. And, since all rubbers break down over time from exposure to ozone and weathering, a thinner cover generally reduces hose life, particularly in tight bend situations.

Spiral reinforced hoseTo reach higher system pressures and retain fl exibility, wires are applied in four or six spiralled layers rather than in braids

Fittings selection

Since hoses vary so much in pressure range, type of reinforcement, and size, there is no “one coupling fi ts all” solution. Broadly speaking, OEM assemblers prefer two-piece crimp fi tting systems. Interchangeable crimp stems can be matched to a ferrule that is ideally suited to a given hose style. Two-piece fi ttings also have the advantage of inventory effi ciency and fl exibility. In the after-market, one-piece fi ttings that are designed to be used on the two or three most popular hose styles provide the most convenient and straightforward solution.Compatible hose and coupling combinations are given on the following chart and again in the technical specifi cation for each hose.

Pulsar offers a wide variety of coupling styles:

5 Digit Parts OnlyIndicates the 1st digit of

elbow angle

Thread SizeCoupling Series

Thread Style Hose Size

Part #4405N-16-16

1st digit also indicates elbow in 4 digit parts

Within these broad divisions, the last two digits will specify the thread style, as detailed above.Angle fi ttings are designated by inserting the degree of the angle as the third digit. For example, a 5005 would indicate a two-piece crimp fi tting with a female JIC thread, and a 5095 would indicate a similar fi tting but with a 90° elbow.Five digit part numbers are used for less common (particularly metric) fi ttings where some uncertainty may be caused by inserting the elbow number in the third position. Dash sizes following the base part number indicate fi rst the nominal thread or tube size, and lastly the nominal hose diameter. Please note that for truck hoses, notably SAE100R5 and SAE100R14, the nominal hose size does not exactly match the actual inside diameter, since these hoses were designed to replace common copper tubing. For example, 151-06 hose measures 5⁄16" I.D., since it was designed to replace 3⁄8"("-06") copper tubing, which measures 5⁄16" I.D.

COMPACT & ULTRA WIRE BRAID HYDRAULIC HOSE

Working pressures of this two wire braid hose exceed requirements of SAE 100R2 while retaining the benefi ts of SAE 100R1 dimensions. 112 meets the SAE 100R16 specifi cation and offers superior fl exibility and a minimum bend radius less than either SAE 100R1 or SAE 100R2 hose. 112 has become a popular choice of original equipment manufacturers since it is lighter weight and easier to route in tight spaces than coventional hoses.

Though 151 is similar, 151H uses a special tube compound that offers superior cold and hot temperature resistance. This hose can be used for hydraulic fl uids, lubricating oils, diesel, air and water. 151H is most commonly used in heavy-duty commercial vehicle applications such as air brake, power steering, fuel fi lter, turbocharger oil supply, tilt cab cylinders, transmission/engine coolant and oil fi ltration lines. 151H meets

the requirements of J1402 and DOT FMVSS 106 Type All for air brake applications.

172T is two lines of 172 bonded together during the manufacturing process. The hose is used in many of the same applications as the single line, but where two hydraulic lines are required. This hose is most commonly found on forklifts and mobile hydraulic lifts. Non-conductive twin line is also available on request.

141 is designed for hydraulic suction and low pressure return lines where petroleum or water base fl uids are being used. NOTE: Push-on fi ttings have aggressive barbs that are designed to work without clamps ONLY on push-on hoses. These fi ttings will not hold pressure on ordinary general purpose hoses. Adding clamps when using push-on fi ttings may cause premature failure due to cutting of the hose tube under the clamp. For general purpose hoses or for applications where clamps are preferred, we recommend industrial brass hose barbs.

Push-on hose, when used with push-on fi ttings, provide fast and neat hose assembly without the use of clamps or ferrules. Because hoses can be assembled quickly and without tools, Push-on is popular for air lines on lumber sorters, newsprint handling equipment, and machinery production lines. Since the hose is resistant to most lubricating oils and hydraulic fl uids, 102 is popular for hydraulic case drains and vent lines as well as general automotive service. Push-On makes a great shop air hose in oily environments.

A typical jack hose is 1/4" I.D. with 3⁄8" male NPT ends, usually 6 feet long. One NPT end threads into the hydraulic hand pump, while the other end usually has a C302-06 quick coupling male attached. A C301-06 female coupler is typically threaded into the ram.Remember that even though 120J Jack Hose is rated for 10,000 psi, jacking applications are static pressure situations at ambient temperature. DO NOT USE jack hose for impulsing or regular hydraulic applications. Many manufacturers claim that their jack hose meets the Material Handling Institute IJ100 standard for jack hose. In fact this standard was withdrawn several years ago and is no longer in effect.

Fitting and Assembly Notes:Use only PULSAR 5016 solid male NPT stems. DO NOT USE JIC, BSP, or other hydraulic threads, since they may not be suitable for these pressures. All hoses must be skived and crimped to the recommended crimp dimensions - see the current PULSAR crimp chart. Use strain relievers to minimize hose fl exing at the coupling; TPG-530 works well for 1/4" assemblies, and TPG-725 fi ts 3/8" hose. Hose assemblies should include safety warning tags (see 120J-TAG).

PULSAR grease whip hose assemblies are durable and fl exible connecting hoses for hand grease gun applications. The rubber hose is PULSAR 3⁄16" I.D. 3,600 psi working pressure SAE 100R1AT single wire hose. The couplings are factory crimped brass 1⁄8" male NPTF couplings. Special order lengths are also available.

On an oil drilling rig, the blow-out preventer (BOP) is a valve system at the wellhead that can be activated quickly to close the space around the drill, or even completely close an open drill hole. There are multiple BOP valves used on each rig, and the valves are controlled hydraulically. When excessive pressure in the hole causes a "kick", the BOP is used to prevent a blow-out. Hoses that connect the BOP to the hydraulic system are required to have thick, fl ame resistant covers that allow them to survive in the case of a fi re, so that the BOP still functions.

Tube: Smooth, black, oil resistant nitrile rubber.Reinforcement: Two braids of high tensile steel wire.Cover: Red, thick, fi re resistant synthetic rubber composite with wrapped fi nish. Temperature Range: -40°C (-40°F) to 120°C (248°F). Tested according to API16D requirements to withstand 700°C (1292°F) for more than 5 minutes at full working pressure.Couplings: Couplings must be covered with fl ame resistant sleeve and BOP over-ferrules according to Pulsar specifi cations to meet test requirements.
