SCIO HIGH SCHOOL MENTOR-MENTEE Sophomore Year SYLLABUS AND NOTICE OF UNDERSTANDING 1. Mentor-Mentee: 4 Years, 0.5 Credit; Required: Freshman-Senior Content: All students are assigned a Mentor for the duration of their high school career. The Mentor/Mentee Class (M/M) meets once a week for 30 minutes. In the M/M class the student works with their Mentor to schedule their classes, monitor their academic progress, and to ensure that Graduation Requirements are being met. At the end of their Senior Year, students will have earned 0.5 credit in Career Education by the completion of all of the class requirements Prerequisite: None. 2. Course Goals: The product of the class is the M/M Portfolio that includes documentation of State Required Programs for Graduation, a record of all Grade Reports and Transcripts, and an assemblage of the student's best pieces of work during their high school career. The class provides opportunities to research and participate in post-high school experiences through Career Readiness (NCRC SoftSkills) and Career Related Learning Experiences (Job Shadows). The class also allows time to develop and complete the State Required Programs of a Personal Education Plan (P.E.P), Career Related Learning Standards (C.R.L.S.) and Extended Applications (Senior Project). 3. Job Shadow Program

A Career Exploration Program designed to introduce students

to the world of work.

Job Shadow Program Scio High School

Packet Components Parent:

Parent Transportation and Medical Authorization: This form notifies the parent of student participation in the Job Shadow program, releases school liability, and authorizes medical attention in the event of an emergency. The form must be completed before the student visits the work site.

Business Host:

Business/Host Information: Definition of a Job Shadow, Basic Business/Host Expectations, Basic Student Expectations and other pertinent information.

Business/Host Participation Information: This information is kept on file at the school. Business/Host Job Shadow Evaluation: Completed by the business/host, this evaluation

provides feedback to the student about his/her job experience. Example Student Questions for the Business/Host: The student will be asking you these

interview questions while at your work site. Student:

Student Checklist: This form guides the student through the Job ShadowProcess. This checklist is completed by the student and returned to the School/Contact Person. To participate in this program, the student must complete the checklist.

Student Contract: This form clearly defines student responsibilities and expectations of a shadow experience. The signature acknowledges an understanding of student responsibilities.

Example Student Questions for the Business Host: These questions will help the student explore and investigate business norms, expectations, and rules. Students will be expected to summarize the knowledge gained through observation and interview. Student Reflection Sheet: This sheet summarizes, evaluates, and monitors a student Job

Shadow experience. The form is to be completed by the student and returned to the school supervisor/contact person.

Student Thank You (To Business) Letter Guide: This form teaches fundamental business etiquette and introduces the student to a sample business letter.

Program Evaluation: After the student visits the work site, this form is completed by the student and returned to the Job Shadow business host. This evaluation provides feedback to the Job Shadow host.

(To Be Completed by Parent)

Purpose: This form notifies the parent of student participation in the Job Shadow program releases school liability and authorizes medical attention in the event of an emergency. This form must be completed before the student visits the job site. Your son/daughter has an opportunity to visit a business at their work site for 3-4 hours. During this time, he/she will shadow an employee to gain an understanding of business norms, expectations, and rules. School personnel may not have visited the business site, may not have met the hosts, will not be present when the student is at the site, and will not supervise the visit. In order to take part in the program, students must:

1. Have written permission from their parent/guardian. 2. Have contacted their host so that he/she has a clear understanding to when he/she is expected at

the work site. 3. Have planned transportation via public or parent approved transportation. This plan must be

submitted to the school prior to the Job Shadow Experience. 4. Have completed a Driver/Passenger Release Form from the school.

Day of the Career Related Learning Experience

Show up on time! Plan to arrive 10-15 minutes early. If you are sick or having a problem, call your contact person and tell hem/her that you will be late or unable to attend. Also, call the Scio High School attendance secretary at 503-394-3276 and inform them of your problem.

When you arrive: 1. Shake his/her hand. 2. Maintain eye contact. 3. If your host does not give you a business card, you

should politely ask for one. You will need a complete name, job title, and address for your thank you letter.

4. Take a copy of your resume/fact sheet and portfolio.

Dress appropriately, be polite, and try to make a good impression for yourself and the school. (Hats or shorts may not be worn during Job Shadows.)

To learn fundamental business etiquette and introduce the student to a sample business letter.

It is important to thank the person to whom you have interviewed. Try to personalize your letter. Let your host know why the Career Related Learning Experience was important to you. Remember to be neat and pay attention to spelling!! Turn in your polished thank you letter with a pre-addressed envelope to your Mentor, immediately after your Job Shadow. Do not delay.
