Virginia YAM Leaders Virginia YAM Chair: Jess Beach, [email protected] In Virginia, we now have a YAM representative for each VAEA Region! These representatives support and encourage YAM activities throughout our state! The committee helps brainstorm YAM activities and judge our county/district YAM Book and YAM Flag submissions. Region Representatives: • Blue Ridge Region YAM Chair: Jauan Brooks , [email protected] • Central Region YAM Chair: Kelly Bisogno , [email protected] • Northern Region YAM Chair: Lee Darter, [email protected] • Southwest Region YAM Chair: Cristi Miller, [email protected] • Tidewater Region YAM Chair: Angie Salerno, [email protected]
Our Mission Statement The Virginia YAM Committee promotes Youth Art Month celebrations across our state. By celebrating YAM, art educators spotlight their passion for art and their students to others (such as local leaders, principals and community members). In our fast-paced school systems so much happens within a year. YAM is a whole month where art can take center stage. We will achieve this through art festivals, special materials made by students, emails with students art, community art walks, etc.…the possibilities are endless! We will encourage teachers to highlight any art lesson done during YAM because after all, it is all about kids making and learning about art! We will invite teachers to share their YAM accomplishments via their county/ district books. Books will now have new expectations: They may be submitted either digitally or hard copy They will no longer have a page requirement We will support our art educators across our state!

The Virginia Art Education Association (VAEA) has partnered with YAM for several years (since 1976) having a YAM Chair serve on the board. Annually, VAEA reaches out to its membership via constant contact to announce the Flag Contest (November), the start of YAM (March 1st) and the YAM Book Contest (April). YAM and VAEA unite to support Art Education throughout Virginia!
During the VAEA Conference, the YAM Committee presented “We be YAMin,” a session explaining about YAM and boosting participation. Also, winners of the 2015 YAM Book Contest are presented at the Awards Breakfast. This year each state winner not only received an award but also a YAM tiara for their crowning achievements (pictured above).

In 2015/2016, Virginia had 383 student submissions to the YAM Flag Contest! Winners were announced through a press release and received an award, poster of their design and a letter of commendation from Jess Beach, Virginia YAM Chair. This year first place winners also received art supplies and a personal letter from Senator Mark Warner honoring their achievements! The Grand Prize winner received all of this and her 3x5’ flag was sent to hang at the YAM Display in Chicago, IL for March 2016!

VAEA Regional Map of YAM Book Submissions Many counties/districts observe YAM but do not submit a scrapbook. This map highlights those counties/districts who go the extra mile and submit documentation of their efforts! Several (over 25) individual schools participated in the YAM Flag contest.
