On March 28, 1886, Weaver and his family traveled north from Holmes County by horse and buggy to find land. Rather than building a home, Weaver made arrangements to rent a farmhouse on 85-acres of land on Madison Road, just south of Shedd Rd. in Parkman Township. Most of the Amish came from Holmes County, but many moved from Indiana, Pennsylvania and other states. In one spring alone, 21 families moved to the Nauvoo and Hayes Corner area.

Today Geauga County is home to the world’s 4th largest Amish community, which was started over 132 years ago when Samuel W. Weaver, his wife and their nine children arrived to build a new future.

Geauga County was the first Amish settlement where the non-Amish were referred to by the Amish as “Yankees” instead of “English”. The reason for this was because northeast Ohio was known as the Connecticut Western Reserve. The settlers in Geauga County and the Western Reserve were called “Connecticut Yankees”, or just Yankees as today’s non-Amish residents are often called. Amish families were widely scattered throughout the eastern part of the county. Some lived in Huntsburg, Burton, Middlefield and Parkman Townships.

Another change brought by the Amish was the introduction of “bank barns”, those built with basements and straw storage sheds. Those in Geauga were the old type barns without a basement, where cows, horses and hay were all on the same level. Amish carpenters were among the early settlers who made bank barns a common sight in the county.

Amish settlers were instrumental in introducing new farming practices to the county. The farmers who lived the county did not consider it financially wise to spend money on lime and fertilizer. All this changed when the farmers saw the lush crops of clover the Amish were putting into the barns.

AMISH LIFE TODAY Today the Amish still live outside mainstream culture and make decisions about their lives based on the Bible. The foundation of Amish culture and family life is based on what they learn in church and at home as children. Most youth settle into the Amish way of life by the time they are 18 or 19 years old and become members of the church.

Story Continued on page 4

Our AmishNeighbors

A Brief History of Early Amish Settlers

in Geauga County

Early Amish settlers were welcome in Geauga County in spite of what the non-Amish population might have thought about their dress and lifestyle. They were trusted and admired because of their honesty and work ethic. These early settlers were mostly farmers, drawn to this area because of availability of farms. Some Amish farmers rented on a 50/50 crop-sharing basis, while others paid cash. Later, more farmland became available to buy from their non-Amish neighbors. Farms were sold for $20 to $40 an acre on a land contract. This made it easy for a family to start farming with little capital. A typical dairy farm had 10 to 30 cows and many also have had a large maple sugarbush. Amish dairymen became prosperous because their large families helped to milk the cows and do other farm work. They could milk 20 to 30 cows a day.

With milk and syrup as the main source of income, the community prospered. In those days farmers would haul their milk on wagons to one of the many cheese factories. Other jobs that the Amish men worked were cutting timber and hauling logs to the Ohio Pail Co. a maker of wooden pails in Middlefield. Still others worked in basket-making factories in Burton and Middlefield, or at a brick and tile factory in Middlefield.

Amish children are expected to help around the house as soon as they are able and are given responsibilities and chores. By the time they marry the girls will know how to sew, make quilts, bake, take care of babies and clean house. The boys will have

amongst the opposite gender that is when some start dating. The Amish teenagers are not any different than any other teenagers. Some behave well while others find it harder to stay out of mischief. The Amish do not want their children to smoke, drink, do drugs, etc. It is certainly not condoned or viewed as okay. Most youth groups (groups vary in size from 20-100) gather at the home of one of the parents on Sunday evenings to play games such as volleyball, basketball, cornhole, croquet, etc. Dinner is served and after dinner everyone joins in singing songs and hymns. After singing the boys will give their girlfriends a ride home in their buggy or if it is too far for a horse, a taxi is used. Activities and interests vary from group to group.

But it is not all work and no play. The Amish youth like baseball, basketball and volleyball. Weddings usually occur on a Tuesday or Thursday, the least busy day on an Amish farm. The wedding is held at the home of the bride. There are typically 200 or more guests-family and friends, but there are no kisses, rings, photography, or caterers. After the wedding a dinner of chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy, ham, relishes, canned fruit, cookies, cakes and pies is served.

RUMSPRINGAThe term Rumspringa has been used and misinterpreted by people that have been innocently misinformed. The Amish defintion of the term would mean, rum (around), springa (running), i.e. running around. To the Amish the term really refers to the time when a teenager becomes old enough (most often 17 years old) to start being with the young folks their age and older of both genders. Before they are old enough to start “Rumspringa” each teenager is occasionally with his or her friends of the same gender only on Sunday evenings. So, when a teenager starts “Rumspringa” and is

learned how to plant, care for the animals and have the basics of carpentry or farming. They will learn what their father does and be able to do it once they are old enough. Both the boys and girls will learn how to harness horses and drive wagons and buggies.

Maple Sugaring, Chardon OH 1870Maple sugaring has been a big part of our rural heritage since the pioneers arrived in this area of the Western Reserve. All across the county this sweet gift of spring is gathered. Some still gather by-hand in traditional buckets, and often with horses pulling large tanks through the woods. Others may employ the latest in vaccum tubing technol-ogy. No matter the method, ask anyone who has made syrup and they will tell you it is a labor of love.

Rae Richards, Richards Maple Products circa 1930

Celebrating 110 years at Richards Maple PRODUCTS Richards Maple Products began in May of 1910. Will and Rena Richards began selling maple products from their farm in Chardon. Back then maple sugar was less expensive than white sugar. They hauled syrup and 2 pound blocks of maple sugar to market in Painesville and Cleveland by wagon. In 1933, they had a stand at the Chicago World's Fair. Quaker Oats also had a stand nearby which was giving away Aunt Jemima pancakes served with real maple syrup. Striking up a conversation Will Richards convinced the Quaker Oats representative to try his Ohio syrup. He loved it and ordered 1000 gallons on the spot. As it was nearly the end of the syrup season Will had to fill the order by buying up other locally made maple syrup. He was able to purchase enough and his cousin delivered it from Chardon to the World's Fair in his Studebaker truck. The representative from Quaker Oats was very happy

Preserving Geauga’s

Maple Heritage

Native Americans are widely recognized as the first to discover the sweet sap dripping from broken branches or cuts in the bark of maple trees. The sap was boiled down in hollowed out logs by placing hot rocks into the sugary solution.

At the Geauga County Maple Museum you can see the many interesting changes that have occurred since the Native Americans found the sweet surprise and set us on this journey making maple syrup. The Museum has many educational exhibits for all ages with games and videos along with their displays.

LOCAL Farms & Markets

Messenger Century Farm has produced syrup since the early 1800s. Bill and Dee Belew purchased the farm from Louis and Helen Messenger in 1992. Their original sugar house, though now vacant is reportedly the oldest sugar house in Geauga County. It stands as a constant reminder of days gone by. Stop by and see their operation and visit the self-serve country store with year round maple syrup available. Hours are dawn to dusk 7 days a week. Many farms like Maple Valley Sugar Bush sell their syrup at roadside stands or other markets throughout the year.

An estimated 6-7 million dollars a year is added to the economy of Geauga county

from maple products.

with the Ohio Maple Syrup commenting that he had some “sour” Vermont syrup left over. In 1936 and 1937 Quaker Oats furnished the Richards pancake mix for their stand at the Great Lakes Exposition in Cleveland. They even furnished a woman dressed like Aunt Jemima to help cook the pancakes. At the end of the Exposition the Richards purchased two buildings housing their stand and moved them to the center of Chardon. First they built the sugarhouse, which they still make syrup in today, and then they built the store.

Today the fourth generation of the family is still running the business and in 2020 will mark 110 years of serving sweetness to Geauga County.

In Geauga County we take Maple Syrup seriously. Families and local communities around the county anticipate this sweetest of seasons with gatherings and celebrations each spring. The county wide celebration was the brain child of Art Carlson, a local merchant on Chardon square. Carlson wanted to increase awareness of maple syrup production as well as the price, which at that time, was sold for 50 cents a gallon. When Carlson told some friends about his idea they started planning the first Geauga County Maple Festival.

PRESIDENT KENNEDY and his wife Jacqueline made an unscheduled visit to Geauga County when he was running for President of the United States in 1959. He visited the Geauga Maple Festival.

Did You Know?IN 1899 Geauga County was the leading county in the nation in maple syrup production

Today Geauga County is the #1 producer of maple syrup in state of Ohio.

During the Civil War, maple sugar was used by the abolitionists in Ohio to protest sales of cane sugar produced by slave labor in the South.

Ohio’s maple syrup is a “Super Food” that has many health benefits naturally provided by antioxidants, minerals and vitamins.

The Maple Festival was founded in 1926 in an attempt to market Ohio syrup in competi-tion with Vermont syrup. The Geauga County News announced that Chardon was “Going to treat the general public to a good old fashioned maple sugar eat.” The event featured free dishes of maple syrup, a sugar camp, tapped trees, an ox team gathering sap, and maple products on display. Festival Planners expected 5,000 vistors and worried over the April ice storm. Over 15,000 people attended, and now the festival is an annual tradition. The Geauga County Maple Festival in Chardon hosts the largest maple contest in the state of Ohio.

This celebration signals the end of the maple season with parades, contests rides and more. See the calendar of events on page 32 or go online to maplefestival.com to learn more.

In 1808, representatives from the Ohio General Assembly chose an unpopulated wilderness on a hill for the county seat of justice. Land for the town plat was purchased for $400 from absentee owner and Boston entrepreneur Peter Chardon Brooks. By 1810, the wilderness on the hill had a name, Chardon (French for thistle). In 1812, the

Township of Chardon, Ohio was formally established and in 2001 officially became the City of Chardon. Today Chardon remains a city rich in history and culture. The public square is surrounded by quaint shops and restaurants. Many activities and events are held here throughout the year.

Settled in 1799, the Village of Middlefield has remained the center of activity for the eastern half of Geauga County. We are home to the 4th largest Amish settlement in the world, where simple farm life contrasts with modern ideals. The slogan “Where Industry meets Agriculture” describes our diversity; it also expresses Middlefield’s strength. We are one of the most

prosperous Villages of our size in Northeastern Ohio. It is an extraordinary place to live, work and visit. The citizens of our community make Middlefield what it is, from the Residents to the Business Owners, to the Industrialists, to the Dairymen, to the Amish Farmers and Craftsmen.

Our top two winter events in Geauga County are Frozen Fest at The West Woods Park in the Geauga Park district and the Maple Madness driving tour. Our family loves watching the live ice sculptors at Frozen Fest and maple madness gives us a pancake breakfast along the way at Messenger Centry Farm. No adventure is complete without a bit of learning and the historical Century Village is just the spot!

As a mom of 8 and blogger behind Gleason Family Adventure, Brandy keeps busy. Her family is always looking for new places to travel and creative ways to get outside.

or to Holden Arboretum to hike the trails on guided snow shoe trip through the beautiful snowscape. If we are looking for some indoor fun, we warm up by the roaring fire at the Burton Log Cabin and taste the different grades of maple syrup. After our syrup tasting we stop at White House Chocolates for handmade candies and free samples.
