Where to Stay?

It is important to find a place that is centrally located so you can easily get to the places you want to see and explore.

Almost all hotels in San Francisco will be happy to have families with children. It would also be smart to go to a hotel that is more family oriented if you are traveling with children, unless, of course, they are very well behaved.

One great family-oriented hotel is the Sheraton in Fisherman’s Wharf. The hotel is an attractive 1970’s building with easy access to the wharf and the ferry to Alcatraz.

Another great place to bring your family is the Hyatt at Fisherman’s Wharf. It is by fat the most family-oriented Hyatt. It has a heated swimming pool and easy access to the Alcatraz ferry.

Hotel del Sol has plenty of rooms and 10 themed suites. The family suite has bunk beds, board games and plenty of toys for the kids. The hotel is located in Pacific Heights and has a beautiful garden with hammocks, mosaics and a pool.

One cute B&B is the Bed and Breakfast Inn. It is placed in a former Victorian farmhouse on a quiet cul-de-sac. The perfect relaxing location.

Another, more sophisticated, hotel for couples, is the Huntington Hotel. Sitting at the top of Nob Hill, this hotel has high class, spacious, individually decorated room with magnificent views.

The ExploratoriumThe Exploratorium is a great place, especially for kids. The Exploratorium ia a museum with tons of hands-on activities for science exploration. The museum has five general thematic areas. Motion, electricity +magnetism, heat + temperature, sound+ hearing, life sciences and patterns.

AlcatrazAlcatraz is an island one and a half miles from San Francisco’s shore. It served as a maximum security prison from 1934-1963. It is now part of the Golden Gate National Park recreational area. A ferry goes to and from the island once an hour. You can simply walk through the memory filled buildings or you can take an audio tour to discover what life was really like in a maximum security prison.

Disney MuseumOne must for any family is a visit to the Disney Museum. This museum has TONS of fun exhibits and videos for everyone. There are also plenty of hands-on activities. The gift shop also has tons of cute Disney merchandise for the kids.

PresidioThe presidio was first established in 1776 and used as a military base until it became part of the San Francisco National Park in 1994. Now people go there for the great hiking trails, bicycle paths and beaches.

Nob HillNob Hill is the highest point of the city center at 338 ft (108m). The incline is so steep that in the old days horse and carriages couldn’t make it up the hill. Due to this houses only started to be built on Nob Hill once the cable car system was opened in 1873. It is now one of the more exclusive neighborhoods.

Where to Eat?

In San Francisco, almost any restaurant you walk into will have something new, different, and most importantly, delicious to try.

Masa’sMasa’s is a very high standard California restaurant. They change their special daily and you have to make reservations a month in advance. It is definitely worth it though, because Masa’s is often considered “the best restaurant in San Francisco”.

Not your first choice if you have children.

The Stinking RoseOne newly trending restaurant in San Francisco is The Stinking Rose. This restaurant is based completely on garlic. Their motto is “we season our garlic with food”. This location with rustic décor is definitely something to check out.

IndigoWhile you are in San Francisco you have to have real Californian food! Indigo serves delicious American specialties with a California flare. This is a great place to stop before visiting the opera house or the symphony hall, as it is located directly across from both.

Tip: This is a great place for kids, they are more than welcome!

ConclusionWhile doing this project, I realized just how many cultures make up San Francisco. I also realized how by staying or visiting in different parts of San Francisco 5 people could all go to San Francisco and all have completely different impressions and experiences of the city. I concluded what I had learned using this statement. “100 visitors, 1000 different experiences”
